Homebrew Awakened Velociraptor Species Details

You were born a beast: swift, sharp-toothed, feathered, and ruled by instinct. Through arcane experimentation, ancient magic, divine intervention, or stranger scholarship, your mind was opened. You gained language, self-awareness, memory, reason, and the capacity for study. Your body, however, remains what it always was: a small predatory dinosaur, made for speed, balance, tearing flesh, and survival.

Awakened velociraptors occupy an uncomfortable place in the world. They are not humanoids, and anyone with eyes can see it. They cannot easily use humanoid tools, weapons, armour, furniture, or clothing. Yet they are not mere animals either. They can speak, read, calculate, reason, remember, and choose. Some are treated as wonders. Others are treated as abominations, trained curiosities, or dangerous beasts that have somehow learned to argue.

Tooth and Claw

Awakened velociraptors remain true velociraptors in body: small, lean, scaly or feathered predators built for speed, balance, and sudden violence. They carry narrow jaws lined with sharp teeth, hooked claws, sickle-like talons, and long tails that steady their low, agile movement. They can grow to be up to five feet tall, making them strong, dangerous, agile creatures. Their plumage varies widely, from muted browns, greys, greens, and rust-reds to brighter crests and markings, that is if they even have a plumage at all. Males often display more vivid feathers, crests, or throat-plumes, while females are often slightly heavier and more subdued in colour, though magical alteration and bloodline variation make this far from universal.

Uplift may grant speech, reason, conscience, and scholarship, but it does not erase instinct. Blood, fear, sudden movement, or fleeing prey can still stir something older than language. A civilised awakened velociraptor is not one without predatory instincts, but one disciplined enough to master them. At their best, they turn their instincts to hunt into a thirst for study: patience, observation, science and magic. At their worst, they become exactly what fearful folk believe them to be: still beasts, with a primal ferocity and an ability to strategise.

Uplifted

An awakened velociraptor is not born into personhood. Its mind is opened by a force beyond ordinary nature: arcane experiment, druidic rite, divine blessing, ancient relic, or some stranger act of will. Whatever the source, the result is not a trained animal, but a true thinking creature granted memory, language, reason, and self-awareness.

This gift is also a burden. The world into which an awakened velociraptor rises was built by humanoids, for humanoids. Doors, books, tools, coins, laws, manners, temples, schools, and courts all assume a familiar body and a familiar upbringing. Even when adapted equipment solves the physical problem, civilisation itself remains difficult. Customs that seem obvious to humans may be baffling to a creature that first knew the world through scent, movement, fear, hunger, and territory. An awakened velociraptor must therefore learn twice: first how to use a body unsuited to civilisation, and then how to understand the civilisation itself. Speech, etiquette, property, modesty, hierarchy, worship, law, humour, and restraint are not instincts. They are rules, often unspoken, and usually enforced by people who forget they had to learn them too.

Some awakened velociraptors imitate humanoid behaviour with careful discipline. Others reject it as hypocrisy or needless theatre. Most live somewhere between the two, knowing that if they wish to be treated as persons, they must first master a world that rarely bothered to imagine them. Occasionally, however, one rises to the challenge of how to navigate human civilisation, and learns the thrive within.

Manners Maketh the Man

A common raptor pack is ruled by strength, with an alpha claiming dominance through force, age, cunning, or fear. Awakened velociraptors regard this as their inheritance, but not their destiny. They are still predators, and they understand hierarchy perfectly well, but they also know that sapience demands more than obedience to the strongest claw.

Most awakened packs are therefore ruled by council. Any raptor accepted as a full member of the pack has the right to speak and vote on matters of territory, migration, alliance, study, war, and succession. Debate can be sharp, formal, and ruthless, but it is debate rather than mere submission. To them, this is civilisation: not the absence of instinct, but instinct placed under law.

Acceptance into a pack is not automatic. A young or newly awakened raptor must prove worth by venturing beyond the nesting-ground and returning with something the pack values. This is usually knowledge: a recovered text, a copied inscription, a mapped ruin, an arcane secret, or some piece of lost lore. In other cases, the offering may be the death of a dangerous beast, monster, or enemy that no ordinary raptor could have overcome by instinct alone.

The point is not merely success, but proof of mind. A worthy raptor must show planning, restraint, memory, strategy, and education. Any beast can kill the weak. A true member of the pack must demonstrate that tooth and claw now serve thought.

The Jungle-Home of Chualla

Most awakened velociraptors trace their kind to the Chualla Jungle, a vast tropical wilderness deep within the region of the Samarkand. Beneath its choking canopy lie moss-covered ziggurats, broken observatories, vine-strangled roads, and the shattered courts of kingdoms long forgotten. Many raptors make their lairs among these ruins, nesting in old temples, hunting through collapsed plazas, and studying carvings older than the cities of men.

Some live in small packs of four to ten, bound by kinship, convenience, or shared tutelage. Others are solitary by nature, wandering between ruins as hunters, scholars, guides, or hermits. Among awakened raptors, a ruined library or half-buried shrine may be as valuable as a fresh kill, and disputes over territory can concern ancient inscriptions as much as hunting grounds.

A few leave Chualla for the “Jungle of Stones”, their term for human cities. There, they are impossible to ignore. Some citizens treat them as marvels, learned beasts worthy of patronage and study. Others see only monsters loose among civilised folk. For good or ill, an awakened velociraptor in a city is never ordinary, and must learn to survive among crowds as carefully as its ancestors survived beneath the jungle canopy.

Higher Purpose

Awakened velociraptors do not regard sapience as a mere convenience. To them, thought is not simply a tool for better hunting, safer shelter, or cleverer speech. It is a summons to grand purpose. A mind once raised above instinct must be put to worthy use, and so many raptors devote their lives to the Seven Arts and Sciences of the Grand Cosmos. Among humans, these arts are often arranged in ascending order, from the lower disciplines of language to the higher contemplation of the heavens. Raptors reject this hierarchy. To them, each art is a necessary expression of civilisation, and none may be despised without weakening the whole.

The first four are called the Foundations: Grammar, Rhetoric, Logic, and Arithmetic. Grammar teaches the naming of things and the ordering of speech. Rhetoric teaches persuasion, judgement, and public reason. Logic teaches truth from error. Arithmetic teaches number, measure, and the first principles of pattern. Without these, no pack may govern itself, no law may endure, and no creature may rise far above appetite.

The final three are called the Stratums: Geometry, Music, and Astronomy. These do not replace the Foundations, but build upon them. Geometry reveals shape, proportion, distance, and design. Music reveals harmony, rhythm, resonance, and order. Astronomy reveals the turning of the heavens and the immeasurable architecture of creation. Through the Stratums, raptors seek not merely to survive within the world, but to understand the infinitely complex work of the Divine Creators.

Most awakened velociraptors choose one art as their principal discipline, though all are expected to possess at least some familiarity with the rest. A raptor may become a grammarian, a logician, a surveyor of ruins, a keeper of songs, a celestial observer, or a master of numbers. Whatever the path, the purpose is the same: to prove that the gift of thought was not wasted, and that tooth and claw may serve wisdom as readily as hunger.

What's In A Name?

Among awakened velociraptors, a name is not merely given. It is chosen. From the moment a raptor can clearly articulate thought, it is expected to take a name for itself. Until then, it may be called by a description, a sound, a birth-marking, or a place in the pack, but such labels are not true names. An unnamed raptor is considered either too young to have fully awakened into personhood, or not yet willing to embrace the burden of sentience. This custom is rooted in Grammar, the first of the Foundations. Grammar teaches the naming of things, and the first thing a young mind must name is itself. To choose a name is to declare: I am not merely hunger, movement, and instinct. I am a self.

Because of this, a raptor’s chosen name is treated as sacred. It is not to be mocked, shortened, translated without permission, or replaced by a nickname unless the raptor permits it. Some choose names from ancient inscriptions, lost kings, stars, spirits, virtues, philosophers, or dead languages. Others take names from personal revelation, a first kill, a remembered dream, or the words of the one who awakened them. There is no single correct convention. What matters is that the name was chosen with intent.

Male names: Melchizedek, Asterion, Thales, Corvin, Sutekh, Orison, Enoch, Varro, Caelus, Iskandar.
Female names: Hypatia, Selene, Tiamat, Isolde, Cassia, Nyxara, Amara, Vespera, Thalia, Samara.
Other chosen names: First-Among-Stars, Red Geometry, Still-Water-Logic, Moon-Between-Teeth, Sevenfold Question, Bright Talon, Theorem, Ash-Over-Stone, No-Keeper, and She-Who-Names-Herself.

Many awakened velociraptors take names that humanoids find strange, severe, pretentious, or difficult to pronounce. This rarely concerns them. A self-given name is not chosen for the comfort of others. It is the first proof that the beast has looked inward and found a person there.

Awakened Velociraptor Traits

Your awakened velociraptor character has certain traits derived from its predatory body, uplifted mind, and unusual place between beast and thinking person.

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity score increases by 2, and your Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma score increases by 1.

Age

Velociraptors mature quickly, reaching physical adulthood by about 3 years of age. Awakening complicates this development: some are uplifted as juveniles and educated gradually, while others are awakened as adults and must learn speech, reason, and civilisation after instinct has already taken deep root. Most awakened velociraptors live between 25 and 40 years, though magic, divine blessing, or careful arcane treatment can extend this considerably.

Alignment

Awakened velociraptors are pulled between instinct and intellect. Their predatory nature inclines them towards pragmatism, caution, territorial loyalty, and swift violence when threatened, but their uplift teaches them discipline, law, debate, scholarship, and moral choice. Those raised in raptor packs often tend towards lawful or neutral alignments, respecting council rule, earned status, and the duties of the accepted pack. Solitary raptors and city-dwellers are more varied, sometimes embracing freedom over custom. Good awakened velociraptors master their instincts in service of wisdom, loyalty, and restraint, while evil ones use learning merely to sharpen appetite, ambition, and cruelty.

Size

Awakened velociraptors are lean, lightly built predators, usually standing between 4 and 5 feet tall when fully grown, with strong males sometimes reaching just over 5 feet. Females are typically somewhat shorter and lighter, though no less agile or dangerous. Most weigh between 80 and 140 pounds, with especially large males reaching 160 pounds or more. Their long tails make them considerably longer from snout to tail-tip than their standing height suggests. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 35 feet.

Creature Type

Your creature type is Beast, rather than Humanoid. You are not affected by spells or effects that specifically require a humanoid target, such as hold person, charm person, or dominate person. However, you are affected by spells and effects that specifically target beasts, unless those effects impose further requirements you do not meet, such as a maximum Intelligence score.

Tooth and Claw

Your bite and claws are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. You are proficient with them, and you may use either Strength or Dexterity for the attack and damage rolls. On a hit, your bite deals 1d6 piercing damage, and your claws deal 1d6 slashing damage.

When you hit a creature with your bite, you may attempt to seize it in your jaws. If the target is your size or smaller, it must succeed on a Strength saving throw or become grappled by you. The saving throw DC equals 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Strength or Dexterity modifier, whichever you used for the bite attack.

While grappling a creature in this way, you cannot use your bite against another target. The grapple ends if you are incapacitated, if the target escapes, or if you release it. A creature grappled by your bite can use its action to make a Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check against your Tooth and Claw save DC, escaping on a success.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Archosauric.

Primal Instincts

While you are uplifted, your senses and reflexes remain those of a born predator. You have proficiency in the Perception and Stealth skills.

Bestial Anatomy

Your body is not shaped like that of a humanoid. You do not possess hands in the ordinary sense, and most tools, weapons, armour, clothing, furniture, and written implements are made for creatures very unlike you. You cannot wield weapons or shields unless they have been specifically crafted or adapted for your body. Likewise, you cannot wear armour unless it has been specially fitted to your shape. Such equipment is custom work, and may cost more or be unavailable in ordinary settlements, at the DM’s discretion.

You have disadvantage on ability checks made using tools or objects that are not adapted for your anatomy. However, through practice and discipline, you can perform simple manipulation, write, turn pages, handle spell components, perform somatic components, and use a spellcasting focus, provided the relevant objects are simple enough for you to manage or have been reasonably adapted for your use.
