Homebrew "Isu" Species Details
Those Who Came Before · First Civilization · The Precursors
"Before your kind took its first breath, we had already mapped the stars, forged the heavens, and written the end of all things."
Ancient beyond memory, the Isu engineered civilization itself—and humanity along with it. Their triple-helix neural architecture grants an awareness that borders on prophecy. Most believed them myth or legend; a rare few linger into the present age, carrying the weight of a dying bloodline and the echo of a world that no longer exists.
"Isu" Traits
Your heritage traces back not to any mortal lineage, but to the architects of existence itself. As an Isu, you carry within your blood and your very neurons the legacy of a civilization that predates recorded history — a people who shaped the world long before any kingdom claimed it. Though your kind are all but extinct, what remains in you is undimmed: a mind built for more than this age can offer, senses that pierce the veil of the visible, and a will that resists the forces lesser beings wield to control one another. You have the following traits.Ability Score Increases
The Isu defied categorization even among themselves — generals, architects, visionaries, and warlords shaped by the demands of an entire civilization.
Increase one ability score by 2 and a different one by 1, or increase three different ability scores by 1 each.
Lifespan
The Isu watched empires rise and crumble over the course of a single lifetime. Some say they did not fear death — only irrelevance.
Isu mature at the same pace as humans but can live for up to five centuries. Their long memory makes them invaluable—and often melancholy—witnesses to history.
Darkvision
The great Isu cities never slept. Their architects built no windows, for their people had no need of sunlight to see.
You can see in dim light within 60 feet as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in darkness as shades of amber.
Eagle Vision
To lesser minds, it looks like intuition — a sudden knowing, a flash of the hidden. To the Isu, it is simply seeing the world as it truly is: alive with intention, threaded with will.
As a Bonus Action, you open your mind to the pulse of living consciousness around you. For 1 minute you gain Truesight with a range of 30 feet, and you have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks. Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you finish a Short or Long Rest. Starting at 5th level, you may use it twice before a rest.
Neurotransmitter Superiority
The Isu built tools to bend the minds of others. It was only natural they also built minds that could not be bent.
Your triple-helix neural structure resists psychic intrusion. You have advantage on saving throws against the Charmed condition, and you have Resistance to Psychic damage.
Precognitive Flash
The Isu did not predict the future — they remembered it. Fragments of what-comes-next surfaced unbidden, a gift from neurons that processed time differently than most.
Whenever you roll Initiative, you may reroll the die and take either result. You can use this trait a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus, regaining all uses when you finish a Long Rest.
Ancient Scholar
History, to an Isu, is not something learned from books. It is lived experience, encoded in memory deeper than bone — the recollection of a civilization they themselves built.
You gain proficiency in History. When you make an Intelligence (History) check, you may treat any roll of 9 or lower as a 10.
Languages
The Isu tongue has no living speakers — only echoes, encoded in vaults and whispered through blood. Those who remain have long since learned to move among lesser peoples.
You know Common and one additional language of your choice.
Suggested Traits
The Isu's legacy lends itself most naturally to Wizards, Artificers, and Divination Clerics, though an Isu Ranger or Rogue makes devastating use of Eagle Vision.
