Homebrew Automaton (UPDATED) Species Details

I wasn't familiar with everything that can be added to make character creation on this site easier. This updated version is the same as the last, except it has been optimized  to be used on the DnDBeyond character creator. —SirChimera

Tick-tock-tick-tock, from around the world do they flock. To see a woman do they go, a woman of clockwork, from head to toe. Before the performance they do see the dancer wound with a key. Springing to life, she begins her dance, this spectacle, a once-in-a-lifetime chance. She ends the scene with a bow, her movements all but done for now. The crowd cheers and soon they disperse, giving coin to the puppetmaster's purse. With mechanical grace he collects his doll, a grin on his porcelain face, for he has fooled them all... Tick-tock-tick-tock...

Facades of Life

Automatons are carefully crafted from frames of steel and clockwork gears, finished with a porcelain covering to imitate skin. Some masters of magic go one step further, bringing sentience to their art piece. Through arcane means they bind a lost soul to the automaton. The process breaks apart and reassembles the soul, so the automaton inherits only bits and pieces of their now former life.

Though based on the art of making golems, automatons are granted free will by their masters. They are designed to bring more to life, not merely to be a servant of convenience.

Not Quite Right

While they appear human at first glance, even the most articulate of automatons will eventually betray their
nature. Prolonged association with one will lead to
telltale signs of inorganic life—irregular blinking, lack of nourishing oneself, and that strange ticking sound to name a few.

Dolls in the World

Automatons are relatively new to the world, though there are rumors that they're based off of ancient designs. Due to their sudden appearance and mannerism quirks, most civilized races are still wary of the new creations, though rock gnomes have a particular fascination with them.

Due to their freedom of choice, they lead all walks of life. Some enjoy captivating an audience, and others revel in their craft. There are even tales of "porcelain adventurers" these days, but that pales in comparison to the worrisome rumors of automaton armies secretly being created.

Automaton (UPDATED) Traits

Every automaton shares similar traits given their mechanical design.

Ability Score Increase

Your Constitution score increases by 2, and your Intelligence score increases by 1.

Age

Automatons are made to resemble humanoids of all ages, but their appearance does not necessarily match their age. An automaton's lifespan is theoretically infinite, given that their parts are properly maintained and replaced.

Alignment

The automaton's personality comes from their bound soul. Their morals are no exception. As such, automatons don't tend towards one alignment over another.

Size

Most automatons are built to imitate adult humans. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Construct Traits

Your creature type is Construct. You have immunity to poison damage and disease, as well as immunity to the poisoned condition. You have vulnerability to adamantine weapon damage. You have no need to eat, drink, or breathe, but you do require a period to recharge in a manner similar to sleep, granting the usual benefits of a long rest.

Darkvision

You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Magic Resistance

You have advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Mechanical Nature

You have advantage on death saving throws. When you are subject to making death saving throws, another creature can attempt to stabilize you with a DC 10 Dexterity check. A creature with and proficient in tinker's tools automatically succeeds on this check.

Past Life

Every automaton inherits some expertise from their bound soul, represented by a skill or tool proficiency. Choose or roll to randomly determine a proficiency from the Past Lives table.

Self-Mending

Your body is magically designed to repair itself. You regain 1 hit point every hour.

Spare Parts

At 1st level and every level thereafter, you gain 1 additional Hit Die that can only be used during a short rest. You do not add these to your hit point maximum. The type of die is a d6.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and one extra language of your choice. This extra language is usually one spoken in your past life.
