Homebrew Chirovyr Species Details

Chirovyr

The Chirovyr are a nocturnal bat-folk people of quiet grace, keen senses and moonlit mystery. They dwell in the world’s shadowed places: Underdark cavern cities, cliffside colonies, ancient towers, deep forests and ruins where the sun rarely reaches. To other races, their large ears, membranous wings, luminous eyes and silent movement make them seem eerie or monstrous, but the Chirovyr are not creatures of mindless darkness. They are watchful and clever, shaped by lives spent listening to the world around them.

Chirovyr culture values patience, loyalty and awareness. They are often soft-spoken among strangers but among their own people they can be expressive and animated: using gestures, ear movements, subtle changes in posture and quiet vocal sounds alongside spoken language. They are most comfortable beneath starlight and moonlight, where their senses are sharpest and their strange beauty is easiest to see.

Silent and Winged

Chirovyr are humanoid in shape and general features, but their bat-like traits mark them immediately. They usually have dark gray, blue-gray, violet-gray, dusky brown or near-black skin. They’re often patterned with subtle mottling across the shoulders, cheeks, ribs, arms, legs and wing membranes. Their eyes are commonly amber, gold, red-orange, pale silver, or moonlit white and many seem to glow faintly in darkness.

Their ears are large and pointed, with thin inner membranes that often show warmer colors such as red, rust, rose, or deep violet. Their wings stretch from their arms to their backs forming broad membranes that allow them to glide, soften falls and move gracefully throughout horizontal spaces. Chirovyr clothing and armor are usually sleeveless as well as open-backed, carefully designed to protect the body without restricting their wings.

Chirovyr tend to be slender, lightweight and agile, built for climbing and gliding. Most stand between 4 feet and just over 5 feet tall. They weigh between 60 and 90 pounds. Though smaller and lighter than humans, they have agility comparable to an Elf. Their bodies are wiry rather than frail: suited for cliffs, caverns, rooftops and other tight spaces.

A Listener’s Perspective

Chirovyr experience the world through sound more than they do through sight. To them a shifting stone, a held breath or the flutter of cloth can be as noticeable as a bright color is to others. This makes many Chirovyr careful, observant and difficult to surprise.

Because their lives are built around darkness and echoes. Chirovyr tend to think in terms of space and consequence. They are cautious when entering unfamiliar territory, but once they understand their surroundings they can move with startling confidence.

They are slow to trust, but not cold. A Chirovyr who has accepted someone as part of their colony, family, or adventuring circle can become fiercely loyal. They remember kindness, betrayals, songs, names and debts with equal clarity.

Moonlit Colonies

In general, Chirovyr colonies are built vertically. Their settlements cling to cliff faces, descend into caverns or rise through abandoned towers and hollowed stone spires. Rope bridges, carved ledges, hanging platforms, roosting balconies and open shafts are common features of Chirovyr architecture. What appears dangerous or inconvenient to a human or dwarf may be perfectly natural to people who can glide from level to level.

Chirovyr homes are often dimly lit by bioluminescent fungus or carefully shielded flame. They decorate their halls with bone chimes and polished stones. Music among the Chirovyr favors soft tones, a slow rhythm and a warm melody that is often accompanied by dance.

Exploration and Adventure

Most Chirovyr who become adventurers do so for many reasons. Some leave their colonies to recover forgotten histories, scout dangerous lands or find relics lost in ancient ruins. Others are wanderers, mercenaries, scholars or messengers between isolated settlements. A few simply want to see the wider world and prove that they are more than the fearful stories told about their kind.

Adventuring Chirovyr are often skilled scouts, performers, or spellcasters. Their natural senses make them valuable in darkness, while their wings give them an instinctive understanding of height, movement and escape routes. Even though Chirovyr do not fly freely, they constantly look for places with higher altitude and observe from vantage points. Some Chirovyr struggle in sunlit cities, where noise and crowds can be overwhelming.

Chirovyr reach physical maturity at about the same age as humans. However, they only live to about 80 years old.

Size

Chirovyr can range from 4 to just over 5 feet tall. They have slender bodies that are lightweight and agile. They typically weight between 60 and 90 pounds. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking and climbing speed is 30 feet.

Gliding Membranes

From a high vantage point you can glide down using your wings. While gliding, you descend 15 ft per turn and you can move up to 45 ft horizontally or down. You can mitigate up to 60 ft in your fall damage calculation. You are unable to glide if you are wearing medium or heavy armor and cannot glide if you are restrained, bound, or otherwise unable to move. While gliding in this way, your hands are unavailable to use objects, hold large objects, make any weapon attacks, or perform somatic components for casting spells.

Chiropteral Senses

Accustomed to hunting in deep caves and the night sky, you have superior hearing. You can "see" in darkness up to 60 feet. Due to your sensitive ears, your sight has declined and you are vulnerable to Thunder damage. You can see in dim light within 5 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray. If you lose your hearing or your hearing is disrupted by a loud noise, you are functionally blind.

Superior Hearing

You have proficiency in the Perception skill and gain advantage on Perception skill checks that rely upon hearing.

Sensitive Eyes

In sunlight, you have disadvantage on Perception checks that require sight.

Satiating Bite

Your fanged maw is a natural weapon, which you can use to make an attack using your Action. If you land your attack, you deal piercing damage equal to 1d8 + your Dexterity modifier. If the creature is living, you regain Hit Points equal to a number of d4s rolled equal to your Proficiency Bonus. After you succeed in an attack, you have met your Food Needs and Water Needs for the day. This trait can only be used once per long rest.

Predatory Nip

Immediately after you take the Attack action and attack with a Light weapon, you can use your fanged maw to make one Predatory Nip attack as a Bonus Action. On a hit, you deal piercing damage equal to 1d4 + your Dexterity modifier.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Undercommon.
