Homebrew Aerling Species Details

Aerlings are small, airy folk with delicate insect-like wings that carry them as easily as a breeze across open skies. At first glance they resemble halflings in stature and warmth, but their features are noticeably sharper and more untamed. Angular cheekbones, narrow noses, and bright, watchful eyes give them an alert and windswept appearance, as though they were shaped by the open sky rather than the earth below. Their movements are light and effortless, every motion carrying an almost drifting grace.

Their translucent wings are among their most striking features, resembling those of dragonflies, moths, or other great winged insects. Veins of silver, gold, or soft color often ripple through the delicate membranes, catching sunlight like stained glass. No two sets are exactly alike, and many Aerlings see their wings as reflections of their spirit and temperament. Even at rest, the wings twitch and hum faintly with restless energy.

Aerlings rarely appear fully “civilized” by the standards of more rigid cultures. There is something wild about them — not savage, but free and untethered. Their clothing is layered, practical, and shaped by wandering lives beneath open skies, often decorated with feathers, beads, bits of parchment, charms, or keepsakes gathered from distant places and old stories. Hair is commonly worn loose or braided, left to move freely with the wind.

They value honesty as deeply as freedom, believing truth should move openly through the world like air itself. Stories, songs, and memories are treated as sacred things to be carried and shared, never hoarded or twisted. To many outsiders, Aerlings feel less like a people born of the earth and more like living fragments of the sky — restless, curious, and forever drawn toward the horizon

Aerling Traits

Spending most of there life in the sky the Aerling tend to be associated with the wind and weather

Winged Flight

Aerling have insectoid wings coming out there back. These wings allow them to fly as long as they arnt to hampered by armor or heavy clothing. The wings are so much a part of there body that any enhanments to walk speed always apply to there flying speed.

  • You have a flying speed equal to your walking speed.
  • You cannot use this flying speed while wearing Medium or Heavy Armor.

Wind-Light body

Aerlings possess an innate connection to the currents of the sky, able to feel and move with the wind as naturally as others walk upon the earth. Air itself seems to cradle them, softening falls and carrying them effortlessly through motion. Even the fiercest storms rarely hinder an Aerling’s flight; where powerful creatures struggle against raging winds, Aerlings drift and weave through them with uncanny grace, as though the storm itself bends to support them. To watch an Aerling fly through violent skies is less like witnessing resistance against nature, and more like seeing someone dance alongside it.

• When you fall, reduce any falling damage you take by an amount equal to five times your proficiency bonus.
• You have advantage on Dexterity (Acrobatics) checks made to maintain balance or maneuver while flying.
• Strong winds do not reduce your flying speed or force you to land.

Sky Drift

Aerlings move through the air with effortless fluidity, carried by subtle currents unseen by most creatures. In flight, they can suddenly glide, twist, or drift aside with almost supernatural grace, slipping beyond danger before an enemy can react. To outsiders, it often appears less like deliberate movement and more as though the wind itself briefly catches and pulls them away from harm.

• As a bonus action, you may move up to half your flying speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
• You can use this trait a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
• You cannot use this trait while unable to fly.

Airborne Awarness

  • You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks relying on sight or hearing while outdoors.
