Homebrew Balinthas Species Details

Curiosity and socialization are driving forces for all balinthas. They tend to have a massive thirst for knowledge and a love of learning, whether that be about the world around them or about other people. Balinthas also celebrate variety in all things, and as such tend to be a very open and generous people. Though they can be somewhat obtuse about social and personal boundaries.

Balinthas are somewhat smaller than humans men on average, standing slightly shorter and weighing slightly less, though there is no difference in height or weight between males and females. Their mostly hairless skin comes in a range of shades of gray, brown, and tan flecked with small metallic scales. Their eyes and hair are vividly colored and can be a wide variety of shades. They lack external ears and their noses are broad and flat.

Structured Yet Fluid

Balinthas society is highly dynamic and malleable, but some structure is applied in the form of a loose, parallel caste system. Balinthas are assigned their caste based on where they apprentice and what job they end up doing to earn a living. Scholars, clergy, artists, and anyone whose work is more focused on the workings of the world, studying the nature of the arcane, or matters of faith is classed as part of the philosopher caste. The guardian caste is made up of professional soldiers, town watch, and mediators; their focus is primarily on protection of others and seeing to criminal proceedings. Finally, the labor caste is the largest, and it is known mostly as the caste of artisans, merchants, farmers, entertainers, and builders. Balinthas are not bound to their caste at birth, but it is instead earned with their profession when they come of age and strike out on their own. While very uncommon, it is possible for someone to change castes later in life, and inter-caste relationships are in no way taboo.
