Homebrew Firenewt Species Details

Firenewts are an elemental species, one that originates from the Plane of Fire but managed to immigrate to the Material Plane over the millenia. They can be found anywhere with 'wet heat'; hot springs and boiling mud in places of volcanic activity being their favorite.

Culturally, firenewts are heavily defined by their faith, which can vary from region to region. Those worshipping gods like Ferhenz tend to be pacifistic in nature, focusing mostly on crafting and smithing. Others may find themselves in the service of efreeti, acting as their conquering forces within the Material Plane. Most infamous are those who willingly serve the likes of demons and elemental princes, relentless combatants that would sooner die than retreat from a battle. This means wherever one goes, a firenewt can either be seen as a helpful friend or a ruthless warlord.

Physically, firenewts greatly resemble reptilians, with deep orange eel-like skin and inky black eyes. They're naturally immune to fire, and can even produce it as a burning saliva a number of times per day. However, they must regularly submerge themselves in hot water on a regular basis, turning sluggish and eventually unconscious without it.

Those that wish to explore and become adventurers undergo a treatment: one that removes both their immunity to fire and need to submerge themselves in hot water. This is an almost irreversible decision, giving firenewt adventurers a reputation for being highly motivated and determined to fulfill whatever personal quest led to them taking the treatment.

Firenewt Traits

Your firenewt character has the following traits

Ability Score Increase

When determining your character’s ability scores, increase one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. Follow this rule regardless of the method you use to determine the scores, such as rolling or point buy. The “Quick Build” section for your character’s class offers suggestions on which scores to increase. You can follow those suggestions or ignore them, but you can’t raise any of your scores above 20.

Age

Firenewts reach maturity at age 11 and typically live about 50 years.

Starting at 5th level, you can briefly become one with the flames. When you take fire damage you can use your reaction to gain immunity to that instance of damage. You can use this reaction a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, regaining all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

Spit Fire

When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can replace one of your attacks with hurling a small ball of flames at a point you can see within 30  feet of you. Each creature within 5 feet of that point must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC = 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus). On a failed save, the creature takes 1d8 fire damage. On a successful save, it takes half as much damage. This damage increases by 1d8 when you reach 5th level (2d8), 11th level (3d8), and 17th level (4d8).

You can use your Spit Fire a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
