Homebrew chiraxi-lunaryx Species Details

The Chiraxi-Lunaryx are curious by nature, endlessly fascinated by places, creatures, and phenomena they have never before encountered. Villages bustling with life, forgotten ruins swallowed by nature, unfamiliar cultures, and above all else, magic, captivate them deeply. Many Chiraxi wander far from their secluded roosts simply to experience the unknown, often acting as scouts, collectors of knowledge, or silent observers perched high above civilization.

Due to their eldritch ancestry, however, the Chiraxi are widely misunderstood and feared throughout much of the world. Countless tales describe them as bloodthirsty sirens who lure unsuspecting travelers close with their soft appearance before draining them beneath the cover of darkness. While fragments of these stories hold truth, most are warped by superstition and fear. In reality, the Chiraxi are typically docile and reserved beings who avoid unnecessary violence. Though vampiric by nature and sustained primarily by blood, most feed only from willing donors or from the dead, viewing forced feeding as cruel and deeply dishonorable.

Despite their peaceful nature, Chiraxi possess instincts that many outsiders find unsettling. Their jaws can unhinge at unnatural angles, allowing them to latch firmly onto prey or a donor while feeding. Though horrifying to witness, the process is often painless, as their saliva carries mild numbing properties that dull discomfort. Their feeding habits, combined with their silent movements and nocturnal tendencies, have only fueled the fearful myths surrounding them for generations.

Physically, the Chiraxi-Lunaryx possess an eerie beauty that many find both captivating and unnerving. Their bodies are mostly humanoid, though moth-like antennae rise from their heads, constantly twitching in response to scents, movement, emotion, and magical energies in the air. Great silken wings extend from their backs, patterned differently between bloodlines, ranging from pale lunar whites to deep abyssal blacks speckled like the night sky. Their lower legs resemble those of predatory birds, ending in sharp talons capable of gripping branches, rooftops, and cliff edges with remarkable stability. Even while resting, Chiraxi prefer elevated perches where they can silently observe their surroundings from above.

Gifted with natural flight, Chiraxi move through the air with near supernatural silence. Their moth-like wings allow them to glide soundlessly through darkness, making them exceptional scouts, hunters, and ambushers when necessary. Combined with their lightweight frames and harpy-like legs, they are incredibly agile in forests, ruins, and urban environments alike.

The Chiraxi possess Darkvision up to 60 feet, allowing them to see clearly in darkness and dimly lit environments. Most Chiraxi are nocturnal, preferring the safety and calm of moonlit hours over the noise and activity of the day. Bright sunlight is not harmful to them, though many find it uncomfortable and prefer shaded forests, cavern dwellings, or nighttime travel whenever possible.

Though curious about the outside world, Chiraxi-Lunaryx are instinctively territorial creatures. They rarely gather in large numbers, instead living within small secluded groups of two to four individuals, usually consisting of close family or bonded companions. Larger gatherings are exceptionally rare and typically occur only during migrations, courtship seasons, or moments of great crisis. Their territories are often subtly marked with pheromones, claw markings, hanging charms, or strands of woven silk hidden among branches and ruins. While not immediately aggressive toward outsiders, Chiraxi become deeply wary when strangers linger within their claimed domain for too long.

Chiraxi settlements are often hidden high within ancient forests, cliff faces, cavern systems, or abandoned ruins reclaimed by nature. Their homes are decorated with hanging silks, carved bone charms, glowing fungi, and lanterns that emit pale blue or silver light. Music and storytelling are deeply woven into their culture, with many Chiraxi communicating emotion through soft humming, clicking vocalizations, and low melodic tones that echo through their roosts during the night.

Though feared by many, those who earn a Chiraxi’s trust discover fiercely loyal companions. They value restraint, honesty, and mutual respect above all else, and betrayal is remembered for generations. A Chiraxi rarely gives its trust lightly, but once that bond is formed, they will defend those they care for with unwavering devotion, even at the cost of their own life.
