Homebrew Castoran Species Details
Castorans are a hardy, medium-sized race of humanoid beavers native to the riverlands, wetlands, and misty lowlands of Alberia. Blending the industrious spirit of nature’s engineers with a spark of primal magic, they are known across the realm as master builders, dam architects, and patient mentors who believe that true excellence is something you construct—one carefully gnawed log at a time.
Physical Description
A typical Castoran stands between 4 and 5 feet tall, with a stocky, powerfully built frame covered in dense, water-repellent brown fur that ranges from deep chestnut to rich mahogany. Their most striking features are their large, chisel-like incisors (capable of felling small trees in minutes), broad flat tails used for both swimming and powerful slaps, and partially webbed paws ending in strong black claws. Their heads are broad with small rounded ears, dark expressive eyes, and prominent whiskers that twitch when they concentrate on complex engineering problems. Males and females both sport impressive builds, though older Castorans often develop silvered muzzles and thicker paunches from years of good fishing and even better feasting.
They favor practical clothing—tough leather vests, tool belts heavy with chisels and measuring strings, and cloaks woven from river reeds—often adorned with lucky four-leaf clovers, carved wooden runes, or small pouches of canola seeds.
Society and Lodges
Castoran society revolves around the Lodge—a multi-generational dam or floating wooden complex that serves as home, workshop, school, and fortress. These structures are marvels of natural engineering: watertight chambers, clever flood gates, underwater storage rooms, and rune-etched support beams that subtly channel Verdant magic to reinforce the whole. A single large lodge can house dozens of families and withstand seasonal floods that would destroy lesser settlements.
They are communal and family-oriented, raising their pups (called “kits”) with an emphasis on practical skills, teamwork, and creative problem-solving. Young Castorans spend their early years gnawing practice logs, learning to swim against strong currents, and assisting in lodge expansions. Elders are deeply respected for their accumulated wisdom and structural expertise.
Culture and Beliefs
Castorans worship the Verdant Spirits—ancient nature entities that embody growth, renewal, and the patient power of flowing water. Their magic blends wizardry and druidic traditions, often focused on the School of Verdancy: spells that animate wood, reinforce structures, grow protective thickets, and grant lucky boons. Many Castorans multiclass as wizard/artificer hybrids or take levels in druid for greater communion with rivers and forests.
They are generally Neutral Good, valuing hard work, community welfare, and the elevation of the next generation. While peaceful by nature, they become terrifyingly effective defenders when their rivers or lodges are threatened, combining clever traps, animated timber guardians, and devastating tail-slap/goring tactics.
Personality Traits: Patient, pragmatic, witty, and slightly obsessive about structural integrity. They love puns (especially beaver-related ones), good food (particularly fish, bark, and acorn-based dishes), and storytelling sessions around lodge fires. They can be stubborn and overly perfectionist when it comes to their projects.
Relations with Others
Castorans maintain friendly but cautious relations with most of Alberia’s peoples. They trade expertly crafted tools, enchanted building materials, and river navigation aids with humans, halflings, and duende. They have a particular soft spot for young adventurers of any race, often establishing temporary “Lodges of Excellence” to mentor promising youths in craftsmanship, survival, and self-reliance.
This mentoring impulse has recently put prominent Castorans like Cleavus into friendly (and sometimes violently comedic) rivalry with other popular mentors such as the pink rhino druid Smoochy and his brother Moochy. While Cleavus insists on building strong foundations through discipline and clever engineering, his rivals favor more… emotional or smash-oriented approaches.
Castorans as Player Characters
Castorans make excellent Wizards, Druids, Artificers, Fighters, and Rangers. Their natural strengths in construction, swimming, and resilience serve them well as adventurers, especially those who act as wise mentors, frontier engineers, or guardians of the wild waterways.
Motto:
“What the river gives, strong teeth and clever minds can shape into something eternal.”
The Castorans stand as living proof that patience, persistence, and a well-placed bite can overcome even the greatest floods of life. Whether raising a dam against a raging river or guiding the youth of Alberia toward their potential, a Castoran never builds anything halfway.

Your Constitution score increases by 2, and your choice of Strength or Intelligence score increases by 1. Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray. Hold Breath. You can hold your breath for 15 minutes. Powerful Build. You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift. Gnaw. Your powerful incisors are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal piercing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
