Homebrew Amethyst Dragonborn Species Details

Amethyst Dragonborn are rare descendants of gem dragons, bearing the crystalline majesty and astral power of ancient amethyst wyrms. Unlike chromatic dragonborn, whose bloodlines burn with elemental fury, or metallic dragonborn, whose heritage often carries divine nobility, Amethyst Dragonborn are shaped by force, gravity, psionics, and the mysterious silence of the Astral Plane.

Their scales are usually deep violet, lavender, black-purple, or translucent amethyst, often catching light like polished gemstone. Some appear almost carved from crystal, with sharp ridges, faceted horns, and glowing eyes that shimmer with pale purple or starlit silver. When an Amethyst Dragonborn is angered or channeling power, faint cracks of violet energy may pulse between their scales, and the air around them may grow heavy, as if gravity itself is bending to their will.

Amethyst Dragonborn are often calm, deliberate, and difficult to intimidate. They tend to speak with purpose, choosing their words carefully rather than wasting breath on empty threats. Their emotions are not absent, but tightly controlled. When they show anger, it is rarely wild or explosive. It is cold, focused, and crushing.

Because of their connection to gem dragons, many Amethyst Dragonborn possess an unusual strength of mind. They are naturally resistant to manipulation, fear, and psychic intrusion. Some develop an instinctive talent for sensing magical forces, moving objects with invisible pressure, or briefly warping gravity around themselves. Their breath weapon is not fire, lightning, or acid, but raw force: a violet shockwave of condensed astral power capable of striking like an invisible hammer.

In many societies, Amethyst Dragonborn are seen as mysterious, noble, or even unsettling. Their gemstone appearance often marks them as beings of rare blood, while their quiet nature can make others unsure whether they are wise, arrogant, or simply patient. Some become scholars, warlocks, psionic warriors, arcane knights, or guardians of ancient secrets. Others are drawn to positions of leadership, believing that power should be controlled with discipline rather than displayed carelessly.

Amethyst Dragonborn often feel a pull toward forgotten knowledge, ancient ruins, astral phenomena, and powerful artifacts. They may dream of endless silver skies, floating crystal islands, or voices echoing from beyond the stars. Whether they embrace these visions as guidance or fear them as warnings, many believe their bloodline carries memories older than mortal kingdoms.

To an Amethyst Dragonborn, strength is not measured by how loudly one roars, but by how long one can remain still before striking.

ASTRAL RUPTURE

Astral Rupture is the signature breath weapon of the Amethyst Dragonborn, though it resembles no ordinary draconic exhalation. Rather than releasing flame, frost, or poison, the dragonborn draws upon the force suspended within their crystalline blood and tears open a momentary fracture in the surrounding space.

As the attack begins, violet light gathers between the dragonborn’s teeth and beneath the scales of the throat. The air grows unnaturally heavy, loose objects tremble, and thin arcs of purple energy trace across the dragonborn’s jaw and horns. A deep crystalline hum builds for an instant before the stored force erupts outward.

The rupture may be released as a concentrated beam or a broad crushing wave. In its focused form, it tears forward in a narrow line of violet pressure, striking like an invisible battering ram and leaving shimmering fractures in the air behind it. In its wider form, it expands into a cone of distorted gravity, engulfing creatures in a violent surge of astral force.

Those caught within the attack feel their bodies suddenly compressed, pulled, and thrown off balance as space seems to collapse inward around them. Armor buckles, stone cracks, and magical barriers ripple beneath the impact. The attack leaves no flame or lingering smoke. Instead, faint amethyst sparks, floating crystal dust, and warped trails of violet light hang in the air for a few moments before fading.

CRYSTALLINE MIND

Your thoughts are protected by the clarity and strength of your gem-dragon heritage.

You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened.

GRAVATIC PULSE

When a creature you can see within 30 feet of you hits you with an attack, you can use your reaction to force that creature to make a Strength saving throw against your Amethyst Breath save DC.

On a failed save, the creature is pushed up to 10 feet directly away from you.

You can use this trait a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

ASTRAL STILLNESS

When you take a long rest, you may spend at least 4 hours in this trance. While in this state, you remain aware of your surroundings and gain the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep.

Crystal Resonance

Starting at 3rd level, you can cast detect magic once with this trait without expending a spell slot.

Starting at 5th level, you can cast levitate once with this trait without expending a spell slot. When cast this way, you can target only yourself.

Once you cast detect magic or levitate with this trait, you cannot cast that spell with this trait again until you finish a long rest.

ASTRAL WINGS

When you activate Gemflight, its duration increases to 10 minutes.

In addition, while Gemflight is active, you can hover, and difficult terrain does not cost you additional movement while you are flying.

GRAVITY WELL

As an action, choose a point you can see within 60 feet. Each creature of your choice within 15 feet of that point must make a Strength saving throw against your Astral Rupture save DC.

On a failed save, a creature takes 4d8 force damage, is pulled up to 15 feet toward the chosen point, and is knocked prone.

On a successful save, the creature takes half as much damage and is neither pulled nor knocked prone.

The affected area is difficult terrain until the start of your next turn.

Once you use this trait, you cannot use it again until you finish a long rest.

ASTRAL CATACLYSM

When you use Astral Rupture, you can transform it into an Astral Cataclysm. Instead of its normal area, choose either a 60-foot-long, 10-foot-wide line or a 30-foot cone.

Each creature in the area makes a Dexterity saving throw against your Astral Rupture save DC.

On a failed save, a creature takes 6d10 force damage and is pushed up to 20 feet away from you. On a successful save, it takes half as much damage and is not pushed.

Using Astral Cataclysm expends two uses of Astral Rupture.

Once you use Astral Cataclysm, you cannot use it again until you finish a long rest.
