Homebrew Critterborne Species Details
Critterbornes are small, bipedal, sentient, mammalian creatures that have/share physical features with certain non-sentient, small--medium sized mammals based on where they live. Critterbornes, when fully grown, can be 2'0"-4'0" tall. The height only depends on genetics; the environment they live in does not affect it at all. Basic physical features--shared with/appearing similar to other mammals--that may present in Critterbornes are ears, tails, paws, and claws. Critterbornes will resemble certain creatures depending on where they live---for example, Critterbornes that live in towns/cities will resemble cats and dogs. Features that all Critterbornes possess are prominent whiskers; large paws with flexible claws that act as fingers; long, extremely powerful tails; and a special organ called a magicaepertor. Their whiskers and the magicaepertor grant Critterbornes the ability to sense the flow, intensity, and concentration of magic--Critterbornes will typically create settlements in areas that have high concentrations of magic due to this. The Critterbornes' large paws--of which are only the hands, their feet are smaller and have no claws--are strangely good at doing intricate tasks like tying knots, threading jewelry, and other similar actions. Their tails are one extremely dense muscle that can be used to deliver exceedingly powerful blows to enemies/prey or the trunks of fruit trees they cannot climb. They are extremely agile.
Critterbornes will always live in medium--large communities/tribes, as they have been known to claim entire forests, cave systems, prairies, and shores as their villages and create "Critterborne Alleys" in towns and cities. Even then, it is not uncommon to see lone Critterbornes exploring and/or adventuring. Critterbornes will always be willing to help other Critterbornes out, even if they are from two different types of environments. Critterbornes have been known to preform "Critterborne Lynchings" on criminals/people they catch causing unnecessary harm within their communities, so towns with Critterborne Alleys often don't have law enforcement. In Critterborne settlements--excluding ones within towns/cities--, gold or type of currency hold no value, as they prefer to trade with and for items of similar value/use.
