Homebrew Ashwalker Species Details
Overview
The Ashwalkers are the descendants of Humans and Tieflings. Though they carry traces of the Plaguewalker's corruption within their bloodline, they are not defined by it. Most Ashborn view themselves as living proof that ancestry does not determine destiny.
They are often found in large cities, frontier settlements, trade hubs, and regions where multiple cultures intermingle. While some face suspicion due to their heritage, many have become merchants, diplomats, adventurers, artisans, and soldiers.
Appearance
Ashwalkers generally possess a mixture of Human and Tiefling features.
Common traits include:
- Pale crimson, rose, or pink-toned skin
- Bone-white or ivory-colored horns
- One eye displaying a normal Human coloration
- One eye displaying a Tiefling coloration
- Smaller, less dramatic horns than full Tieflings
- Roughly 50% possess tails
- Slightly sharpened teeth
- Dark or unusually colored hair
Many Ashwalkers can pass for unusual Humans at first glance, while others display obvious infernal ancestry.
Origins
Ashwalkers descend from Humans and Tieflings.
Tieflings themselves are believed to have emerged during or after the Plaguewalker Wars, carrying remnants of corruption left behind by the Plaguewalker's influence.
As centuries passed, Human and Tiefling populations intermixed, creating the Ashwalkers.
Most modern Ashwalkers reject the notion that they bear responsibility for the actions of their distant ancestors.
Ashwalkers Traits
Creature Type: Humanoid
Size: Medium (about 4–7 feet tall)
Speed: 30 feet
Mixed Heritage
Due to Ashwalkers not having a distinct culture of their own, they tend to take after the customs, skills and traditions of one parent's culture more strongly than the other.
Despite being accepted more than their outsider parent, they do tend to be less trusted than purebloods. However this makes them more likely to strive for success for acceptance, and glory.
Dominant Bloodline
While all Ashwalkers possess both Human and Tiefling ancestry, one lineage often manifests more strongly.
Horns of Power
After being on the fields of battle, you have noticed your horns begin to attract fresh mana from the slain. They act as manite crystals, allowing you a base amount of spell slots not tied to a wand or staff. Most Ashwalkers never awaken the true potential of their horns. The phenomenon typically manifests only after prolonged exposure to combat, death, and ambient mana. For this reason many Ashwalkers live their entire lives unaware of the power sleeping within them.
These can be used in conjunction to a wand of staff or independently. you may also cast cantrips without a wand or staff.
your horns can grant the following spell slots per level:
Level 5: Can cast cantrips without a wand or staff
Level 7: 1 first level spell slot
Level 10: 1 second level spell slot
Level 13: 1 first level spell slot
Level 18: 1 second level spell slot
Level 20: 1 third level spell slot
Rituals can recharge your horns once per long rest if forgoing the health regeneration.
Soul Scavenger
Whenever a creature dies within a battle in which you participated, your horns absorb fragments of released mana.
For every 10 creature levels worth of absorbed mana, you gain 1 Mana Charge.
Mana Charges may be spent to restore expended Horn Spell Slots according to the following table:
| Mana Charges | Restored Slot |
|---|---|
| 1 | 1st-level slot |
| 4 | 2nd-level slot |
| 9 | 3rd-level slot |
A creature's level contributes a number of charges equal to one-quarter of its level (rounded down, minimum 0).
Examples:
- Level 10 creature = 1 charge
- Four level 5 creature = 2 charges
- Five level 8 creature = 4 charges
Only a max of 10 mana charges can be stored at a time.

Posted Jun 20, 2026Hi everyone, hope you enjoy this new dnd race. please bear in mind that the horns of power ability mentions certain homebrew systems unique to my campaign (mainly on the magic side) so feel free to forgo that part or tailor it to fit the conventional dnd magic system or homebrew it to something entirely different!
