Homebrew Caelivulpes Species Details
- Origins and Mythic History
The oldest Caelivulpes histories speak of Astraevyra, a realm of endless skies suspended somewhere within the Hallway of Worlds. Unlike the mortal lands of Aetheris, Astraevyra was a domain shaped by celestial forces and living aether. Floating islands drifted upon radiant currents, rivers of light wound between crystal spires, and vast cloud forests stretched across horizons illuminated by perpetual dawn.
According to Caelivulpes tradition, their ancestors were shaped by three primordial celestial principles that governed the realm. These principles are remembered not as gods, but as eternal truths that defined existence itself.
The First Dawn embodied renewal, courage, truth, and righteous beginnings.
The Silver Moon represented memory, dreams, healing, compassion, and reflection.
The Living Storm symbolized strength, protection, endurance, and the willingness to confront adversity.
The earliest Caelivulpes believed these forces flowed through all things, guiding both individuals and civilizations toward harmony. Their society grew around these ideals, producing heralds, guardians, navigators, artisans, philosophers, and wardens who maintained the balance of their radiant homeland.
Then came the catastrophe remembered only as The Shattering.
No surviving record fully explains what happened. Ancient accounts describe impossible storms, collapsing skies, fractures in reality, and entire regions of Astraevyra vanishing within moments. Some scholars speculate that the disaster originated within the Hallway itself. Others believe an unknown cosmic entity attacked the realm. The oldest Skyborn survivors simply describe a single terrifying truth:
"The sky broke."
The destruction of Astraevyra triggered a desperate exodus. Vast Kithflights of refugees fled through unstable planar pathways, carrying children, elders, relics, and whatever fragments of their culture they could preserve. Countless Caelivulpes perished during the migration. Many became lost forever within the spaces between worlds.
Those who survived eventually emerged above Aetheris, descending across distant lands like showers of radiant stars.
Their first settlements arose among the floating archipelagos and elevated territories of Valthira, where the skies felt closest to the home they had lost. There they began the long process of rebuilding their civilization.
Centuries later, the Caelivulpes no longer seek to recreate Astraevyra. Instead, they strive to honor its memory while embracing their new place in Aetheris. The Shattering remains a defining cultural wound, but it is also the foundation of their greatest lesson:
Loss may shape the future, but it must never imprison it.
- Physical Characteristics
The Caelivulpes possess a striking combination of vulpine features and celestial elegance. Their appearance immediately sets them apart from nearly every other species of Aetheris, often inspiring curiosity, admiration, or reverence among those encountering them for the first time.
Though their bodies are fully mortal, subtle traces of their extradimensional heritage remain visible in nearly every aspect of their appearance.
Fur and Markings
Caelivulpes possess soft, dense fur comparable to that of a fox, though it often displays unusual coloration and patterns.
Common fur colors include:
- White-gold
- Silver
- Soft gray
- Cloud-white
- Pale amber
- Sunset red
- Dusky violet
- Midnight blue
Many individuals possess naturally occurring luminous markings that resemble flowing runes, stars, feathers, or celestial patterns. These markings often brighten during moments of strong emotion, magical exertion, prayer, or intense concentration.
The markings are not tattoos but natural manifestations of what Caelivulpes call the Echo, a lingering remnant of Astraevyra's celestial energies.
Hair
Hair colors frequently complement fur coloration and include:
- Silver
- Platinum blonde
- White
- Golden blonde
- Ash gray
- Midnight black
- Pale blue
- Soft violet
Many Caelivulpes braid decorative feathers, crystal beads, or small charms into their hair to represent family ties, achievements, or important life events.
Eyes
The eyes of a Caelivulpes are among their most distinctive features.
Common eye colors include:
- Gold
- Silver
- Sapphire blue
- Violet
- Pale rose
- Storm gray
- White-blue
Their eyes naturally reflect light and often appear faintly luminous in darkness. Some rare individuals possess star-shaped pupils or eyes lacking visible pupils altogether.
Build
Caelivulpes are lightly built and exceptionally graceful.
Their bodies are designed for agility and aerial movement rather than raw physical strength. Even heavily trained warriors retain an elegant, athletic appearance rather than a bulky physique.
Most move with an effortless fluidity that many other species find difficult to imitate.
Height
Most adult Caelivulpes stand between:
5 feet and 5 feet 10 inches
Though relatively light for their size, they remain surprisingly resilient and capable of enduring long journeys, difficult climates, and extended periods of flight.
Wings
The defining feature of the species is their wings.
Each Caelivulpes possesses a pair of feathered wings extending from the upper back. These wings vary widely in coloration and often reflect lineage traditions, personal identity, or ancestral heritage.
Common wing colors include:
- Golden-white
- Silver-blue
- Storm-gray
- Violet dusk tones
- Black with starlike highlights
Their wings serve not only as organs of flight but also as emotional expressions. A Caelivulpes may unconsciously adjust wing posture to display affection, caution, sorrow, pride, uncertainty, or excitement.
Within their culture, touching another person's wings is considered deeply personal and is generally reserved for close family, trusted companions, or romantic partners.
Other Distinctive Features
Additional features include:
- Large foxlike ears capable of subtle emotional expression
- Long tails used for balance and communication
- Naturally excellent hearing
- Lightly luminous skin beneath the fur
- Feathers that occasionally shed harmless motes of fading light
Among Skyborn elders who survived the Shattering, faint glowing fractures may occasionally appear across wings or markings. These are regarded as sacred reminders of Astraevyra's fall rather than deformities.
For the Caelivulpes, beauty is not measured by perfection.
It is measured by how gracefully one carries the scars left behind by the sky.
- Lifespan, Maturity, and Family Structure
The Caelivulpes view life as a journey of growth, remembrance, and purpose. Their culture places tremendous importance on emotional maturity, wisdom, and the responsibility each generation bears to those who follow. While they possess longer lifespans than most humans, they do not measure a life by years alone. Instead, they often speak of how many lives were touched, how many burdens were eased, and what beauty was left behind.
Caelivulpes reach physical maturity around the age of 18, though they are not considered full adults until completing their First Flight Pilgrimage, a cultural journey undertaken sometime between the ages of 20 and 30. During this pilgrimage, young Caelivulpes travel beyond their home Kithflight to discover their place in the wider world.
Aetherborn Caelivulpes typically live between 350 and 450 years.
The oldest surviving Skyborn elders may exceed 600 years, though such individuals are increasingly rare. These ancient survivors are revered as living bridges to Astraevyra and are often sought as teachers, historians, and spiritual advisors.
Death is not viewed as an ending, but as a final journey carried upon unseen winds. Funerary rites focus on remembrance, gratitude, and celebrating the legacy left behind. The Matron of Ravens is deeply respected for providing peace to souls whose homeland no longer exists.
Family Structure
The family structures of the Caelivulpes are among the most unique in Aetheris.
While biological relationships are valued, they are not considered the sole foundation of family. The destruction of Astraevyra forced survivors to rebuild communities from strangers, and this experience permanently shaped their understanding of kinship.
Bloodkin
Bloodkin are biological relatives connected through ancestry.
While important, blood relationships alone do not define social standing or inheritance. A distant cousin who shares no meaningful bond may be considered less significant than a trusted Heartkin companion.
Heartkin
Heartkin are chosen family.
These individuals may include:
- lifelong friends
- adopted siblings
- mentors
- students
- trusted companions
Heartkin bonds often become as strong as blood relationships and frequently outlast them.
Skykin
Skykin are individuals who trained, learned, or came of age together.
Many Caelivulpes describe their Skykin as siblings regardless of blood relation. Shared flight lessons, pilgrimages, and communal upbringing create lifelong connections.
Echokin
Rarely, two or more individuals experience recurring shared dreams, visions, or prophetic experiences.
These individuals become Echokin.
Such bonds are considered spiritually significant and often lead to lifelong cooperation between families or entire Kithflights.
Sunbonds
Sunbonds are formal life partnerships.
Most Sunbonds are romantic, though some are formed between companions whose loyalty and devotion transcend conventional relationships.
A Sunbond is sealed through the Wingfold Vow, in which two Caelivulpes wrap their wings around one another while exchanging personal promises before family and community.
Kithflights
Above all else stands the Kithflight.
The Kithflight functions as:
- household
- extended family
- social network
- support structure
- educational community
- spiritual circle
Children are raised collectively. Elders are cared for collectively. Resources are shared collectively.
To the Caelivulpes, no individual should ever face life's burdens alone.
Mature Themes: Family, Loss, and Memory
The destruction of Astraevyra continues to influence family life centuries later.
Many surviving Skyborn lost entire bloodlines during the Shattering. Some possess no living relatives beyond the communities they later joined. As a result, Caelivulpes culture strongly rejects the notion that ancestry alone determines worth.
Adoption is extraordinarily common.
Orphans, refugees, and displaced individuals are routinely welcomed into Kithflights regardless of species.
Many Caelivulpes believe this practice honors the memory of those who were never able to find refuge after the fall of Astraevyra.
- Society, Governance, and Social Order
"A single wing cannot carry a people."
— Traditional Caelivulpes proverb
Unlike many species of Aetheris, the Caelivulpes do not possess a unified kingdom, empire, or nation-state. Their society is decentralized, community-oriented, and built around cooperation rather than hierarchy.
Though outsiders sometimes mistake their peaceful nature for weakness, the Caelivulpes maintain remarkably stable communities because authority is rooted in trust, wisdom, and service rather than force.
The Kithflight System
The fundamental unit of Caelivulpes society is the Kithflight.
Most Kithflights contain between twenty and eighty individuals, though larger settlements may contain several interconnected Kithflights operating together.
Each Kithflight functions as a self-governing community responsible for:
- education
- resource management
- defense
- dispute resolution
- cultural preservation
- care of children and elders
While leadership exists, decisions are generally made through consultation and consensus.
Kithleaders
Every Kithflight is guided by one or more respected leaders known collectively as Kithleaders.
Titles vary by region, but common examples include:
- Kithmother
- Kithfather
- Kithparent
- Chorus Elder
- Wingspeaker
Leadership is earned rather than inherited.
A Kithleader is expected to:
- mediate disputes
- maintain harmony
- represent the community
- place communal welfare above personal ambition
Those who seek authority for its own sake are rarely trusted.
The Sky Circle
Major decisions are made through gatherings known as Sky Circles.
During these meetings, members sit together in a ring while discussing important matters openly.
Topics may include:
- settlement expansion
- alliances
- resource allocation
- defense
- leadership succession
Participation is encouraged regardless of social status.
The ideal outcome is consensus rather than majority rule.
The Aetherbound Chorus
While individual Kithflights remain independent, they are united through a species-wide institution known as the Aetherbound Chorus.
The Chorus serves as:
- cultural network
- diplomatic forum
- historical archive
- emergency response organization
Representatives gather periodically at major sanctuaries such as Dawnspire Refuge to discuss matters affecting the species as a whole.
Importantly, the Chorus possesses no direct authority over individual Kithflights.
Its influence comes entirely from respect and cooperation.
Social Roles
Though highly flexible, several respected traditions remain common throughout Caelivulpes society.
Dawncrafters
Artists, historians, teachers, and keepers of memory.
Windweavers
Diplomats, negotiators, and messengers.
Skylancers
Guardians, scouts, and defenders.
Echospeakers
Mystics who study visions, dreams, and celestial phenomena.
Featherbinders
Artisans responsible for crafting, wingcare, and ceremonial objects.
Stormwardens
Specialists who monitor weather, magical anomalies, and planar instability.
These roles are not castes. Individuals may move freely between them throughout their lives.
Lineages of the Modern Caelivulpes
While not biological subspecies, five major cultural lineages have emerged.
Dawnwreathed
Associated with renewal, leadership, healing, and diplomacy.
Moonblessed
Known for artistry, empathy, dreamcraft, and emotional wisdom.
Stormbound
Guardians, explorers, and defenders shaped by courage and action.
Twilightborne
Philosophers, mediators, and guides who navigate periods of transition.
Shatterwing
Keepers of memory and specialists in confronting planar threats.
All five lineages are respected equally.
Most communities contain members of several lineages living together.
Mature Themes: The Burden of Survival
Beneath their harmonious exterior, Caelivulpes society wrestles with several difficult realities.
Skyborn and Aetherborn Tensions
The oldest survivors remember Astraevyra directly.
Younger generations know it only through stories.
This occasionally creates tension between preserving tradition and embracing change.
Survivor's Guilt
Many Skyborn elders still struggle with questions such as:
- Why did I survive?
- Who should have been saved instead?
- Could the Shattering have been prevented?
Such questions have no easy answers.
Reverence and Exoticism
Throughout Aetheris, Caelivulpes are often viewed as symbols rather than individuals.
Some communities treat them as divine messengers.
Others romanticize their appearance, wings, or celestial origins.
Most Caelivulpes accept admiration gracefully, but many privately resent being seen as myths rather than people.
Fear of Another Shattering
Perhaps the deepest anxiety shared across the species is the possibility that history could repeat itself.
This fear explains why so many Caelivulpes become:
- planar wardens
- diplomats
- guardians
- scholars of extraplanar threats
They have already lost one home.
They are determined not to lose another.
- Cultural Identity and Daily Life
"Hope is not a feeling. Hope is a duty."
— Inscription above the Hall of First Landing, Dawnspire Refuge
The culture of the Caelivulpes revolves around three interconnected principles:
Memory. Harmony. Purpose.
These ideals shape nearly every aspect of daily life, from architecture and education to relationships, art, and faith.
Unlike many societies born from tragedy, the Caelivulpes do not dwell endlessly upon their suffering. Instead, they believe remembrance carries an obligation: one must build something worthy of what was lost.
Their communities are known for their warmth, beauty, hospitality, and emotional openness, creating environments where cooperation is encouraged and personal growth is celebrated.
Daily Life
Most Caelivulpes settlements follow rhythms tied closely to the sky.
Dawn is considered a sacred time of renewal.
Morning often begins with:
- communal greetings
- meditation
- flight exercises
- morning songs
- weather observations
Work occupies much of the day and may include:
- crafting
- teaching
- patrol duties
- scholarship
- diplomacy
- magical study
- agriculture
Evening is devoted to community.
Families and Kithflights gather to share meals, stories, music, and news.
Dusk holds particular spiritual significance, symbolizing both remembrance and hope.
Food and Hospitality
Caelivulpes cuisine emphasizes freshness, balance, and communal dining.
Common foods include:
- fruits
- grains
- honey
- fish
- poultry
- mountain herbs
- lightly spiced meats
Hospitality is considered a sacred obligation.
A traveler who arrives peacefully is rarely turned away.
Many Caelivulpes settlements maintain dedicated guest halls specifically for visitors, pilgrims, and refugees.
Art and Expression
Art occupies a central place in Caelivulpes culture.
Common forms include:
- aerial dance
- music
- poetry
- sculpture
- stained crystal work
- lightweaving
- storytelling
Beauty is viewed not as luxury but as nourishment for the spirit.
Many settlements intentionally incorporate gardens, sculptures, murals, and public performance spaces into everyday life.
Education
Education begins early and continues throughout life.
Young Caelivulpes are taught:
- history
- flight
- empathy
- diplomacy
- self-discipline
- practical trades
- magical theory
Emotional intelligence is considered just as important as intellectual achievement.
A wise person who lacks compassion is viewed as incomplete.
- Traditions, Rituals, and Ceremonies
The Caelivulpes believe that traditions exist to preserve memory, strengthen community, and guide future generations. Many of their customs emerged after the fall of Astraevyra, serving as cultural anchors that helped transform a scattered refugee people into a thriving civilization.
Though practices vary between Kithflights and regions, several ceremonies are recognized across nearly all Caelivulpes communities.
The First Glide
What It Is:
A childhood rite marking a young Caelivulpes' first controlled aerial descent.
When It Occurs:
Usually between ages 5 and 8.
Why It Matters:
The First Glide symbolizes trust, courage, and independence. Family members gather beneath cliffs, towers, or specially constructed platforms while the child takes their first leap under careful supervision.
The event is often accompanied by songs celebrating the courage of Astraevyra's refugees.
Outsider View:
Most outsiders find the ceremony inspiring, though many are shocked at how young participants appear.
The Flight Pilgrimage
What It Is:
A journey undertaken by young adults before being recognized as full members of society.
When It Occurs:
Usually between ages 20 and 30.
Why It Matters:
Participants leave their home Kithflight to travel across Aetheris, learning from other cultures and discovering their personal purpose.
Many future diplomats, heroes, scholars, and leaders trace their paths back to lessons learned during their pilgrimage.
At its conclusion, participants receive their adult Flight Name.
Outsider View:
Many nations actively welcome Caelivulpes pilgrims, recognizing them as valuable cultural ambassadors.
Starfall Remembrance
What It Is:
The most sacred memorial observance in Caelivulpes culture.
When It Occurs:
Once each year on the anniversary of the Shattering.
Why It Matters:
Communities gather to remember those lost during the destruction of Astraevyra.
At sunset, thousands of lanterns are released into the sky while names of the dead are recited.
The ceremony begins in silence and mourning but concludes with celebration, music, and communal feasting.
The lesson is simple:
"We remember the dead by continuing to live."
Outsider View:
Many neighboring peoples attend alongside the Caelivulpes, creating one of the most moving cultural events in Aetheris.
The Wingfold Vow
What It Is:
The most sacred oath ceremony practiced by the species.
When It Occurs:
During marriages, life partnerships, sworn brotherhoods, or extraordinary vows of service.
Why It Matters:
Participants wrap their wings around one another while speaking promises witnessed by family and community.
Breaking a Wingfold Vow is considered one of the gravest personal failures imaginable.
Outsider View:
The ceremony is widely admired for its emotional intimacy and symbolism.
The Dawnwatch
What It Is:
A daily observance practiced throughout Caelivulpes society.
When It Occurs:
At sunrise.
Why It Matters:
Participants face the rising sun in silence, offering gratitude for another day of life and opportunity.
Some recite prayers.
Others meditate.
Many simply watch the dawn in quiet reflection.
The Dawnwatch embodies the central Caelivulpes belief that every new day deserves appreciation.
Outsider View:
Many Aelorian temples have adopted similar practices.
- Religion, Philosophy, and Spiritual Beliefs
The spiritual life of the Caelivulpes is defined by a delicate balance between remembrance and renewal.
Unlike many peoples of Aetheris, they carry memories of a world that no longer exists. Their faith therefore centers not only upon worship, but upon understanding how one continues forward after profound loss.
Most Caelivulpes embrace the gods of the Celestial Harmony while preserving cultural traditions inherited from Astraevyra. They do not see these traditions as competing belief systems. Rather, they view them as different chapters of the same spiritual journey.
The Echo Philosophy
At the heart of Caelivulpes spirituality lies a concept known as the Echo.
The Echo is understood as the lingering influence of Astraevyra upon the soul.
It manifests as:
- memory
- intuition
- compassion
- resilience
- the desire to protect others
The Echo is not worshipped.
It is honored.
Most Caelivulpes believe every individual carries a fragment of something greater than themselves, and that living honorably strengthens this connection.
The Three Celestial Principles
Though no longer treated as deities, three foundational ideals remain central to Caelivulpes philosophy.
The First Dawn
Represents:
- courage
- renewal
- justice
- hope
Its teachings encourage individuals to face hardship with dignity and determination.
The Silver Moon
Represents:
- memory
- healing
- compassion
- reflection
Its teachings emphasize emotional honesty and understanding.
The Living Storm
Represents:
- endurance
- protection
- strength
- sacrifice
Its teachings remind individuals that true strength exists to serve others.
These principles function as philosophical guides rather than objects of worship.
The Gods of the Celestial Harmony
Most Caelivulpes worship deities from the modern Aetherian pantheon.
Aeloria
Aeloria is perhaps the most beloved deity among the Caelivulpes.
Her teachings of renewal, mercy, and perseverance strongly resonate with a people who rebuilt themselves after catastrophe.
Vaelora
Patron of inspiration, art, and music.
Vaelora's influence can be found throughout nearly every Caelivulpes settlement.
Zelthar
Many guardians, diplomats, and oathkeepers follow Zelthar's path of justice and truth.
Thalor
Deeply respected for guiding souls through transitions, grief, and personal transformation.
The Matron of Ravens
The Matron holds special significance because she provides peace to those who died during the Shattering.
Her clergy are honored guests in most Caelivulpes communities.
Pyraxion
Especially revered among Stormbound lineages and Stormwatch communities.
Death and the Soul
Most Caelivulpes believe:
- the soul is carried by unseen winds
- memory survives beyond death
- oaths possess spiritual weight
- grief should be shared rather than hidden
They view death not as annihilation, but as a journey beyond the horizon.
This belief contributes greatly to their calm attitude toward mortality.
Sacred Duties
Common spiritual obligations include:
- protecting the vulnerable
- preserving knowledge
- honoring promises
- offering hospitality
- remembering the dead
- confronting threats that endanger entire peoples
Many Caelivulpes see these duties as more important than ritual itself.
One may pray daily and still fail spiritually if one neglects compassion.
- Relations with Other Peoples
The Caelivulpes occupy a unique position within Aetheris.
They are not numerous enough to dominate nations, nor isolated enough to remain apart from them. Instead, they often serve as bridges between peoples, helping facilitate diplomacy, trade, scholarship, and mutual understanding.
Most cultures regard them favorably, though admiration occasionally creates challenges of its own.
Relations with Humanity
Caelivulpes generally enjoy positive relationships with most human cultures.
They admire humanity's adaptability, creativity, and determination.
Humans, in turn, often view the Caelivulpes with fascination and respect.
Particularly strong ties exist with:
- Aurelion
- Stormvaarders
- Runebrand communities
- Velmyrisian city-states
- Skyborne Dominion territories
Many Caelivulpes serve as advisors, navigators, or diplomats within human nations.
Relations with Elves
The Caelivulpes often find common ground with elven cultures.
Their strongest relationships are typically with:
Astraelas
Shared interests in celestial mysteries and magical scholarship create natural partnerships.
Sylvanbough Elves
Both peoples value harmony, beauty, and stewardship.
Umbric Elves
Mutual respect exists between two cultures deeply familiar with loss, transition, and adaptation.
Relations with Umbrathari remain cautious but generally respectful.
Relations with Dwarves
Caelivulpes and dwarves frequently develop strong friendships despite their differences.
Dwarves admire:
- reliability
- craftsmanship
- commitment to duty
Caelivulpes admire:
- perseverance
- loyalty
- resilience
Many joint communities exist within mountainous regions of Thaldrinor.
Relations with the Fenris
Few peoples understand the Caelivulpes as deeply as the Fenris.
Both species lost entire worlds.
Both arrived on Aetheris carrying immense trauma.
Both transformed suffering into purpose.
While their cultures differ greatly, they often form unusually close friendships and alliances.
Many Caelivulpes describe the Fenris as kindred spirits.
Relations with the Sentinari
The Caelivulpes maintain excellent relations with the Sentinari.
Their shared emphasis on service, protection, and sacrifice has created numerous partnerships throughout Aetheris.
Sentinari often appreciate the Caelivulpes' ability to navigate emotional and diplomatic challenges, while Caelivulpes admire the Sentinari's steadfast devotion.
Relations with Other Species
The Caelivulpes generally strive to maintain peaceful relations with nearly all peoples.
They often become:
- mediators
- messengers
- scholars
- explorers
- healers
throughout multicultural communities.
Their greatest strength lies not in military power, but in their ability to foster trust.
Enemies and Threats
The Caelivulpes hold particular hostility toward forces that threaten entire civilizations.
These include:
- void cults
- aberrant entities
- planar destabilizers
- extraplanar invaders
- tyrants who exploit divine authority
- organizations that engage in slavery or systemic oppression
The memory of Astraevyra's destruction has made them exceptionally vigilant against existential threats.
If there is one lesson every Caelivulpes child learns, it is this:
"The sky can break. Never assume it cannot."
- Settlements, Homelands, and Presence in Aetheris
"We no longer seek to rebuild Astraevyra. We seek to ensure every sky we call home becomes worthy of remembrance."
— Kithmother Vaelrys Dawnfeather
Though the Caelivulpes originated beyond Aetheris, centuries of settlement have transformed them into an established people with communities scattered across much of the world. Their settlements almost always reflect their ancestral love of open skies, elevated terrain, and harmonious architecture.
Most Caelivulpes communities are built where the horizon feels limitless:
- floating islands
- mountain ridges
- cliffside plateaus
- elevated forests
- coastal headlands
- aerial trade routes
Their architecture emphasizes beauty, openness, and integration with the surrounding environment rather than domination of it.
Homeland: Valthira
The floating archipelagos and sky-realms of Valthira serve as the spiritual homeland of the modern Caelivulpes.
When the first refugees arrived on Aetheris, they were drawn to Valthira's:
- floating islands
- aether currents
- open skies
- skyborne civilizations
The region reminded them of Astraevyra more than any other place in the world.
Today, many Caelivulpes communities coexist alongside the Skyborne Dominion and other aerial cultures, contributing their expertise in navigation, diplomacy, weather observation, and planar studies.
Though they do not rule any nation of their own, they are considered one of Valthira's defining peoples.
Dawnspire Refuge
Location: Central Valthira
Population: Approximately 8,000
Importance: Spiritual and cultural center
Dawnspire Refuge is the closest thing the Caelivulpes possess to a capital city.
Built atop a massive floating island suspended among Valthira's skyways, Dawnspire serves as:
- meeting place of the Aetherbound Chorus
- center of historical preservation
- diplomatic gathering site
- sanctuary for travelers
Elegant towers, crystal observatories, sky gardens, and open-air amphitheaters fill the city.
At its center stands the Hall of First Landing, where records of the earliest refugee generations are preserved.
Every Caelivulpes hopes to visit Dawnspire at least once in their lifetime.
Skyhaven Perch
Location: Western Valthira
Population: Approximately 3,500
Importance: Navigation and exploration
Skyhaven Perch occupies a chain of naturally floating islands linked by suspended bridges and aerial platforms.
The settlement serves as a major center for:
- explorers
- skyship crews
- cartographers
- weather scholars
Many Flight Pilgrimages begin or end here.
Skyhaven residents are famous for their adventurous spirit and willingness to travel to the farthest corners of Aetheris.
Stormveil Roost
Location: Stormveil Isle, Azure Reach
Population: Approximately 2,000
Importance: Northern defense and storm monitoring
Situated far north near the Northern Wastes, Stormveil Roost is one of the most isolated Caelivulpes communities.
Founded primarily by Stormbound and Shatterwing lineages, the settlement monitors:
- supernatural storms
- void anomalies
- extraplanar disturbances
- northern migration routes
Life here is difficult.
Constant storms batter the cliffs and towers.
The people of Stormveil are respected throughout Caelivulpes society for their courage and vigilance.
Many members of the Stormwatch Vigil are trained here.
Lumenfall Oasis
Location: Southern Sahariad
Population: Approximately 1,800
Importance: Scholarship and preservation
Hidden beneath towering sandstone arches, Lumenfall Oasis surrounds a spring believed to contain unusually pure aetheric energies.
The settlement functions as:
- archive
- university
- historical repository
- relic sanctuary
Many ancient records concerning Astraevyra are preserved within its crystal libraries.
Scholars from across Aetheris frequently travel here.
Windreach Sanctuaries
Scattered throughout:
- Thaldrinor
- Myrdrithis
- Velmyris
- Arganthyr
- Ozythralis
small Caelivulpes communities maintain sanctuaries that serve as:
- waystations
- diplomatic enclaves
- shrines
- weather stations
These settlements ensure that few travelers are ever truly far from Caelivulpes hospitality.
The Aetherwind Caravans
Not all Caelivulpes remain stationary.
Some Kithflights travel continuously aboard:
- skyships
- aerial barges
- floating roost-platforms
These mobile communities follow:
- trade routes
- celestial phenomena
- migratory patterns
- seasonal weather systems
Young adventurers often spend years traveling with an Aetherwind Caravan before choosing where to settle permanently.
- Adventurers and Callings
The Caelivulpes possess a strong cultural tradition of exploration, service, and personal growth.
Unlike many species, leaving home is not viewed as abandonment.
It is viewed as an opportunity.
The Flight Pilgrimage ensures that nearly every Caelivulpes spends part of their life traveling beyond their homeland, and many discover purposes that carry them far from their original Kithflights.
Common motivations include:
- seeking knowledge
- protecting others
- studying planar phenomena
- preserving history
- exploring the unknown
- honoring personal vows
- uncovering truths about Astraevyra
Many also become adventurers because they fear another catastrophe like the Shattering and wish to prevent such disasters wherever they arise.
Common Classes
Caelivulpes are frequently found among the ranks of:
Bard
Especially diplomats, historians, storytellers, and Harmony-Weavers.
Cleric
Particularly followers of Aeloria, Vaelora, Thalor, and the Matron of Ravens.
Paladin
Oathbound guardians, protectors, and champions of justice.
Ranger
Skylancers, scouts, navigators, and Stormwatch patrols.
Sorcerer
Those whose Echo manifests through powerful magical gifts.
Wizard
Researchers, archivists, and planar scholars.
Monk
Practitioners of aerial martial disciplines and meditative traditions.
How Their Culture Views Adventurers
Most Caelivulpes communities view adventurers positively.
A successful adventurer:
- gathers wisdom
- forms alliances
- protects others
- broadens understanding
Even those who never return home permanently are remembered with affection and pride.
The greatest shame is not wandering.
The greatest shame is living without purpose.
- Role in the World
The Caelivulpes embody one of the central themes of Aetheris:
The ability to rebuild after loss.
They are not conquerors, rulers, or empire-builders. Instead, they serve as guides, protectors, diplomats, scholars, and keepers of memory.
Their stories naturally support themes of:
- survival
- hope
- displacement
- found family
- duty
- redemption
- cultural preservation
- healing after catastrophe
For players, the Caelivulpes offer opportunities to portray characters balancing grief and optimism, memory and progress, tradition and change.
For Game Masters, they provide a people uniquely suited to stories involving:
- planar mysteries
- diplomacy
- ancient civilizations
- celestial lore
- exploration
- existential threats
What makes the Caelivulpes distinctly Aetherian is not their wings, their magic, or even their lost homeland.
It is their conviction that tragedy does not define a people.
What they build afterward does.
