Homebrew Cambion Species Details

The Exchanged Bloodline

In the yellowed pages of medieval demonology, the cambion is not a creature of hellfire and brimstone, but a mystery born of a hidden threshold. Derived from ancient roots meaning "crooked" or "to exchange," the earliest cambions were spoken of in whispers alongside traditional changelings—unearthly children left in the cradles of mortals. They are defined by strange contradictions: they are impossibly heavy to lift, they possess a chilling physical stillness that mimics death, and they carry a mind completely detached from linear time.

The Merlin Inheritance

While popular culture often aligns half-fiends with absolute malice, historical mythology offers a much more complex fate. The most legendary cambion in European lore is Merlin the Enchanter, whose otherworldly parentage granted him an unmatched mastery over prophecy and the hidden secrets of the earth rather than a desire for destruction. Like Merlin, modern cambions walk a razor's edge between the mortal world and the deep, enigmatic forces of the outer planes, using their unnatural insight to alter the fates of kingdoms or peer into the minds of friends and foes alike.

Cambion Traits

Creature Type: Humanoid
Size: Medium (about 4–7 feet tall) or Small (about 3–4 feet tall), chosen when you select this species
Speed: 30 feet

As a Cambion, you have the following special traits.

Crooked Exchange

Named for the ancient changelings, you possess an innate ability to blend seamlessly into societies where you don't belong, slipping unnoticed through shadows or masking your true intentions behind a flawless facade. You gain proficiency in the Deception or Stealth skill (your choice).

Darkvision

Your eyes are accustomed to the twilight thresholds where worlds meet, allowing you to peer through the thickest gloom as if it were open day. You have Darkvision with a range of 60 feet. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of yourself as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light.

False Vitality

To a casual observer, you possess a chilling physical stillness. Your skin is often cold to the touch, your breath is faint or entirely absent, and your baseline biology mimics the quiet, stagnant resilience of the grave. You have advantage on saving throws against being Poisoned, and you do not need to breathe.

Heavy Flight

Your supernatural density makes flight a demanding physical feat, but the magic in your blood allows you to lift off the ground regardless of the burdens you carry. You have a flying speed of 15 feet. You can use this flying speed even while wearing medium or heavy armor.

Preternatural Mass

Your physical form is anchored to the material plane with an unnatural, spiritual density. To those who attempt to force you aside, your body feels as heavy and unyielding as a solid block of mountain stone. You have advantage on saving throws and ability checks made to avoid being shoved, knocked prone, or otherwise being moved against your will.

Prophetic Insight

Inheriting the legendary "Second Sight" of the great folkloric seers, your mind exists a half-step ahead of the present. You easily catch fragments of the immediate future and effortlessly read the ripples of thought around you. You know the Guidance cantrip. Starting at 3rd level, you can cast the Detect Thoughts spell with this trait. Starting at 5th level, you can cast the Augury spell with it. Once you cast Detect Thoughts or Augury with this trait, you can't cast that spell with it again until you finish a long rest. You can also cast these spells using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level. Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells (choose when you select this species).
