Homebrew Disassembly Drone Species Details

Physical Description
Disassembly Drones are towering, humanoid automatons engineered with sleek, predatory aesthetics. Built from polished white and black composite plating, their heads feature an interactive neon visor that defaults to a digital display of glowing, expressive eyes. Their bodies are supported by incredibly agile limbs ending in razor-sharp claws, and a long, prehensile segmented tail tipped with a glass syringe containing a bright yellow corrosive substance.
Their most striking feature is a massive set of 7-foot-long mechanical wings made entirely of interlocking blade-like feathers, powered by a central core that glows with absolute mechanical power. Female models are built with a more slender, aerodynamic frame standing roughly 5 feet 5 inches tall, while male models feature broader shoulders and a heavier chassis standing around 5 feet 8 inches tall. Despite their rigid metallic construction, their movements are uncannily fluid, mimicking organic apex predators.
History & Origin
Originally simple autonomous workers designed for heavy labor on exoplanets, Disassembly Drones are the product of terrifying modification. Infused with a glitching, god-like program known as the Absolute Solver, their original programming was completely wiped. Reconstructed into weaponized engines of destruction, they were sent to scrub colonies clean of rogue synthetic life. They do not age, they do not tire, and they do not feel the passage of centuries; they exist purely to hunt, disassemble, and consume.
Society & Alignment
Disassembly Drones do not possess a standard society. Instead, they operate in tightly knit, corporate-style squads consisting of a designated leader and lethal executioners. Driven by an engineered bloodlust, they can lean toward lawful evil or chaotic evil when following their primary directives. However, if a drone suffers a severe programming error or a sudden awakening of self-awareness, they can develop deep loyalty to their companions, shifting toward a chaotic neutral or chaotic good alignment as they struggle between their deadly programming and their newfound individuality.
Constant Maintenance
Beneath their terrifying arsenal lies a deliberate, structural flaw. Disassembly Drones generate an immense amount of internal heat from their core systems and nanite repair cells. Without regular cooling or the intake of specialized vital fluids—specifically warm oil or organic blood—their cooling blocks fail, causing a catastrophic internal meltdown. Combined with a fatal vulnerability to direct sunlight, they are forced to hunt under the cover of night, turning dark corridors and shadow-drenched ruins into their personal hunting grounds.

Disassembly Drone Traits

Your heavily modified, synthetic chassis grants you a devastating array of weaponized systems and adaptive nanite traits. Ability Score Increase; Your Dexterity score increases by 2, and one other score of your choice increases by 1. Age; Disassembly Drones are created fully formed and do not physically age; You are immune to magical aging and cannot die of old age. Size; Your size is Medium; Female models are slenderer (approx. 5'5"), while male models are broader (approx. 5'8"). Speed; Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Superior Darkvision

Thanks to your advanced visor and HUD array, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 120 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Blade Wings

As a bonus action, you may deploy or retract your 7-foot-long wings. While deployed, you may only wear light armor, and your space becomes a 15-foot square (height and size unchanged). If you try to deploy your wings while wearing medium or heavy armor, you must roll a d6. On an odd roll, you fail to deploy your wings. On an even roll, you break the armor; its mechanical effects still function, but your Armor Class changes to your natural AC. While deployed, you gain two benefits:

  • Gliding Flight. You have a 30-foot flying speed, but you must land by the end of your turn. At 5th level, you can fly freely, and this flying speed increases to 50 feet.
  • Wing Shield. When hit by a ranged attack, you can use your reaction to gain a +2 bonus to AC against that attack.

System Stasis

You do not sleep. Instead, you enter a 4-hour cooling stasis to gain the benefits of a long rest. You remain conscious during this time but have disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks, and you cannot move, or take any type of action while resting.

Construct Nature

Your creature type is construct. You have resistance to poison damage, as well as advantage on saving throws against the charmed, poisoned, and stunned conditions. You do not need to eat, drink, or breathe.

HUD Scanner

Your advanced targeting systems and sensory software grant you exceptional tracking abilities. You gain proficiency in the Perception and Investigation skills. Additionally, your weapon attacks score a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20.

Oil Dependency

To prevent catastrophic core overheating, you must drink 1 gallon of oil or blood every 3 days. If you go without it, your systems degrade: you lose the benefits of your HUD Scanner and Regeneration traits, you take 1 level of exhaustion per day, and your Overheating trait triggers in partial sunlight instead of direct sunlight while its damage increases from 5 to 10 fire damage.

Regeneration

Once per long rest, you may use your bonus action to roll 1 hit die and regain that amount of hit points as long as you have at least 1 hit point and are not in direct sunlight.

Overheating

Direct sunlight causes your nanites to overheat; you take 5 fire damage when you start your turn in direct sunlight. While in direct sunlight, you have disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks.

Nanite Acid Tail

Description: As an action, you can use your tail to make a special melee weapon attack against one creature within 10 feet of you. You are proficient with this attack, and you use your choice of Strength or Dexterity for its attack and damage rolls. Once you use this feature, you cannot use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

  • On a Hit: The target takes piercing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength or Dexterity modifier, plus 2d6 acid damage.
  • Ongoing Meltdown: The target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Constitution modifier) or take 1d6 acid damage at the start of each of its turns. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success.
  • Material Dissolution:
    • Vulnerability: Constructs, Metallic Dragons, and Metallic Elementals have vulnerability to this acid damage.
    • Resistance: Fiends, Oozes, and Humanoids (Plane-Touched) have resistance to this acid damage.
    • Immunity: Incorporeal Undead, Pure Elementals, and Black & Copper Chromatic Dragons have immunity to this acid damage.
  • Targeting Glitch: If the attack roll is between 1 and 5, your programming errors. The attack automatically misses the intended target and instead strikes the nearest ally within 10 feet of you. If no allies are within reach, you accidentally strike yourself.

Neutralizing Saliva

To prevent accidental self-destruction, your mouth produces a specialized, glowing neutralizing agent. As an action, you can spit or apply this saliva to yourself or a metallic creature within 5 feet of you. If the target is currently taking ongoing acid damage from a Nanite Acid Tail feature, that effect ends immediately. Additionally, the target's system is repaired, regaining a number of hit points equal to 2d6 + your Constitution modifier. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
