Homebrew Apis-Regina Species Details
Apis-Regina are towering, anthropomorphic bee-folk whose bodies possess the stature and natural traits of a queen bee. Most stand between 5 and 7 feet tall, though they are treated as Medium creatures for the purposes of the game.
An Apis-Regina typically possesses four arms, two digitigrade legs, a large bee-like abdomen, expressive antennae, broad wings, powerful mandibles, and a body covered primarily in soft fur with smaller areas of natural chitin.
Their coloration commonly combines golden yellow, dark brown, and warm honey-gold tones. Individual Apis-Regina may display different markings, fur lengths, wing shapes, and degrees of visible chitin.
Despite their queen-like physiology, an Apis-Regina does not automatically command other creatures. Their influence over insects depends on trust, training, magic, or class features.
Apis-Regina are not limited to any particular profession or adventuring path. Some become fighters, barbarians, paladins, or monks who rely on their imposing physique and natural weapons. Others become druids, clerics, wizards, sorcerers, or other magical adventurers.
Their four arms do not grant additional actions or attacks. Their wings develop gradually, and young Apis-Regina are not immediately capable of sustained flight.
Apis-Regina Traits
As an Apis-Regina, you have the following species traits.Royal Physique
You have four arms. Your additional arms do not grant you additional actions, bonus actions, reactions, or attacks.
You can use your additional arms to hold small objects, open doors, use tools, hold material components, or keep a hand free for somatic spell components.
You cannot benefit from more than one shield at a time. Holding additional weapons does not grant you additional attacks.
If your additional arms would meaningfully help with climbing, holding, or carrying, the DM may grant you advantage on the relevant check.
Mandibles
Your powerful mandibles are a natural weapon.
When you make an Unarmed Strike with your mandibles and deal damage, you can deal 1d6 piercing damage instead of the normal damage.
You use Strength for the attack and damage rolls.
Queen's Wings
You have large bee-like wings that continue to develop as you gain experience.
When you fall and are not Incapacitated, you can use your Reaction to reduce the falling damage you take by an amount equal to five times your Proficiency Bonus.
At higher character levels, you gain additional flight-related species traits.
Untrained Flight
Starting at character level 3, your wings are strong enough to carry you briefly through the air.
During your turn, you can move through the air up to your normal movement speed. You must end your turn on solid ground or another surface capable of supporting you. Otherwise, you fall.
You cannot use this trait while wearing Heavy Armor.
Fully Developed Wings
Starting at character level 5, your wings are fully developed.
You gain a flying speed of 30 feet. You cannot use this flying speed while wearing Heavy Armor.
Antennae Sense
Your long and sensitive antennae detect the finest scents and subtle changes in your surroundings.
You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.
In addition, you can determine the direction of a detectable source of honey, nectar, or a large concentration of flowering plants within 60 feet.
Hivemind
You can communicate simple feelings, images, and intentions to creatures that are bees, bumblebees, wasps, or similar social insects.
This communication does not allow complex conversation. However, you can convey simple concepts such as danger, food, follow, flee, hive, protect, and intruder.
This trait does not control those creatures and does not force them to obey you. Their response depends on their nature and the DM's discretion.
Royal Resilience
Your regal instincts and natural self-assurance make you difficult to intimidate or mentally influence.
You have advantage on saving throws to avoid or end the Charmed or Frightened conditions.
Royal Nectar
After finishing a Long Rest, you create a number of portions of magical nectar equal to your Proficiency Bonus.
You or another creature can consume one portion as a Bonus Action. The creature gains temporary hit points equal to 1d4 + your Proficiency Bonus.
A creature can benefit from only one portion of your Royal Nectar at a time.
Any unused portions lose their magic when you finish your next Long Rest.
