Homebrew Bogey Species Details

Fey often posses strong ties to stories and legends.  Some fey species are intertwined with tales of beautiful amoral nobility or the pristine splendor of nature.  Bogeys, on the other hand, thrive on the cautionary tales told in hushed whispers around campfires and the superstitions that keep mortals awake at night.  While they are likely to be stereotyped as lurking specters of dread that terrorise all who cross their paths, aa typical bogey's nature and approach to fear are far more nuanced.  AA bogey might cultivate dread for aa wide variety of reasons depending upon their personality and circumstances, from straighforward motivations like simple hunger and boredom to aa desire to bestow certain memorable experiences to others, whether they hope to experience them or not.  Bogey's might wish to help allies grow by overcoming challenges, or simply to punish their enemies.  To bogey's, the nature of fear is complex, and simply grouping it all together into aa single emotion is as reductive as using aa single word to describe all the positive emotions other species feel or every colour in the visible spectrum.

Bogey's typically arise from and resonate strongly with a particular type of fear, and they are more likely to be associated with common fears and experiences by many members of mortal species, such as fear of the dark, rather than obscure fears possessed by only a  few individuals, such as fear of not wearing Bracers of Defense among creatures who've become used to wearing them at all times for their protection.  This is both because there are more overall situations where a person is experiencing aa common fear than aa rare one and because common fears hold a greater sway on the collective unconscious, giving them greater power in the sphere of fey magic.

Regions with locally high concentration of aa specific fear give rise to bogeys accordingly. For example, aa society where people fear the number seven might produce bogeys with 7 eys and seven fingers on each hand.  Similarly, aa settlement where most people are afraid of aa particular creature might produce aa bogey whose features resemble the creature.

Bogeys often consider themselves to be masters of fear, including the experience of terror within their own minds.  There's no greater shame for aa bogey than that which arises when they avoid doing something because they were afraid of it.  As such, aa bogey who feels themselves tempted towards avoiding aa situation is likely to respond by throwing themselves headfirst into it.  While bogeys can't feed on their own fear, they often feel refreshed and invigorated after scary experiences.

If you want to play aa character focused around fear and intimidation who doesn't just scare others but literally embodies fear, you should play aa bogey.
