Homebrew Hundari Species Details
The hundari are an isolated yet old species. Most stories refer to them as one of the first species to walk Tehiri, during a period that most Hundari storytellers call the 'dark times', where the land was dominated by wild gods and primal creatures that have long died out. These dark times forced the ancient hundari to band into tribes, fleeing into the least occupied corners of Tehiri to escape the chaos of a newly formed world. Regardless of how true these stories are, it led to the vast majority of hundari living out of sight, many believing them to be either clans of lycanthropes or entirely fictional.
By nature, hundari have an intense and inescapable urge to form into groups with others. They often struggle to operate outside of some kind of pack, and are quick to either establish or blend into any kind of hierarchy. Once inside one they're exceedingly loyal, proudly serving their pack at best and acting cold towards those outside of it at worst. They are not blindly loyal, nor will they join the first group they see, but the fear of not having a group is strong, and many will support any order they join, even an unjust one, until the end.
Physically, hundari are a lupine bipedal race, often resembling wolves and wild dogs. Their appearance can vary greatly based on their original pack and homelands. Lacking in neither strength nor speed, their true call to fame is their almost supernatural sense for danger, being able to almost 'feel' harmful attacks against their pack and move to stop them. This gives them a reputation for being paranoid, but few will object to having a hundari warrior in their party.
Among the hundari, adventurers are exceedingly rare. Most never leave their remote tribes, and those that do would sooner join with grand organizations than become wandering mercenaries. Consider your character's relationship with their original pack or tribe, and use the Lone Wolf table below to help inspire your character's ties to them:
Lone Wolf Table
| d6 | Relationship |
|---|---|
| 1 | Facing great injustice you could no longer ignore, you broke free from your original pack. |
| 2 | You were assigned to be your tribe's scout and bring information or resources from the outside world back with you. |
| 3 | An entire tribe of hundari was wiped out overnight. You were the sole survivor. |
| 4 | Some calamity or problem has befallen your tribe, and you've left to try and find a solution to it. |
| 5 | Stories of the outside world overcame your fear of isolation. You left your tribe, hoping to find a new group beyond the one of your birth. |
| 6 | You were abandoned in the woods as a baby. A different culture of humanoids found you and raised you as their own. |
Hundari Traits
As a hundari, your character has the following traits.Ability Score Increase
When determining your character’s ability scores, increase one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. Follow this rule regardless of the method you use to determine the scores, such as rolling or point buy. The “Quick Build” section for your character’s class offers suggestions on which scores to increase. You can follow those suggestions or ignore them, but you can’t raise any of your scores above 20.
Age
Hundari can walk and crawl much sooner than most humans, but still reach adulthood at roughly the same time. They rarely live longer than a century.
Alignment
Hundari are intensely oriented towards societal hierarchy and order, leading most to more lawful alignment.
Creature Type
You are a humanoid.
Size
Hundari are a taller species, ranging from 6 feet to almost 7 feet tall. Regardless of your position in that range, your size is Medium.
Speed
Your walking speed is 30 feet.
Attentive
You cannot be surprised. You also remain semi-aware while unconscious, and can hear the movements and noises of creatures within 60 feet of you, unless the creature makes a successful Stealth check against your passive perception.
Bite
You have strong jaws that you can use to make unarmed strikes. When you hit with them, the strike deals 1d6 + your Strength modifier piercing damage, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
Sentinel's Shield
When a creature within 5 feet of you is hit with an attack roll, you can use your reaction to swap places with the creature, and are hit by the attack instead. The creature can be no more than one size larger than you, and you can use this trait a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, regaining all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Wild Instincts
You are proficient in one of the following skills of your choice: Insight, Investigation, or Perception. When you make an ability check with the chosen skill, roll a d4 and add the number rolled to the check's total.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language that you and your DM agree is appropriate for your character. Most hundari speak the hundari language, which is an antiquated dialect of sylvan.
There isn't a way for us to add this custom language as a selectable option, but you can leave the selection blank and add it in as a custom language on your character sheet.
