Brightwater Lineage

"Blood writes the first line of a story. Character writes the rest."

The children of the Brightwater Lineage are exceedingly rare, born from the union of infernal and mortal blood under extraordinary circumstances. Some trace their ancestry to ancient pacts, others to forbidden romances, and a few to sacrifices so profound that they become legends whispered across generations. Whatever their origin, one truth remains: no two Brightwaters walk the same path.

Many expect those of infernal blood to be cruel, manipulative, or destined for darkness. Others believe their mortal heritage should temper those instincts. Brightwaters reject both assumptions. They are living proof that ancestry is only the beginning of a story, never its conclusion.

Some embrace their infernal gifts. Others conceal them. Many simply treat them as another tool with which to navigate the world. Whatever path they choose, Brightwaters are remembered less for the blood in their veins than for the lives they build.

Between Two Worlds

Members of the Brightwater Lineage often possess subtle signs of their infernal ancestry. Some bear elegant horns that sweep backward like those of a ram, while others have only small obsidian points hidden beneath dark hair. Their eyes often carry unusual colors—molten gold, ember red, silver, or deep crimson—and many have pointed canine teeth or a slender tail that betrays emotion before words do. Skin tones vary as widely as any mortal ancestry, though many display warm undertones reminiscent of smoldering embers.

No two Brightwaters look exactly alike. Their infernal heritage manifests differently in every generation, making each individual appearance as unique as their story.

Chosen, Not Destined

Brightwaters rarely gather into communities of their own. Instead, they are found wherever opportunity, curiosity, or adventure calls them. Some become respected scholars, diplomats, artists, explorers, or storytellers. Others become mercenaries, nobles, wanderers, or rogues.

Because they are so often judged before they speak, many Brightwaters develop remarkable confidence—or remarkable wit. Some learn to charm others before prejudice can take root. Others simply refuse to care what strangers think. Most share one defining trait: an unwavering belief that destiny belongs to the individual, not their ancestry.

A Brightwater is far more likely to ask, "Who do I wish to become?" than "Who was I born to be?"

Brightwater Names

Brightwaters usually adopt the naming traditions of the culture that raises them. Some proudly preserve infernal names inherited through their bloodline, while others choose names that reflect personal ideals, memorable experiences, or family traditions.

Many carry heirlooms that pass from generation to generation—not because they represent infernal power, but because they remind each bearer that every story begins with those who came before.

A Legacy of Stories

Brightwaters often become natural storytellers, writers, performers, or conversationalists. They are drawn to people, places, and experiences that leave lasting impressions. Whether through song, written word, or simple conversation, they believe the greatest measure of a life is not how long it lasts, but how deeply it is remembered.

Brightwater Lineage Traits

Members of the Brightwater Lineage inherit gifts from both their infernal and mortal ancestry. While every Brightwater's appearance and talents are unique, they all share the following traits.

Ability Score Increase

Your Charisma score increases by 2 and your Intelligence score increases by 1,

Age

Brightwaters mature at approximately the same rate as humans, though traces of their infernal heritage often grant them long, healthy lives. Most live between 100 and 150 years, though exceptional individuals have been known to live longer.

Size

Brightwaters vary in build and stature, often reflecting both their infernal and mortal ancestry. Most stand between 5 and 6½ feet tall. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet. Brightwaters move with quiet confidence, their stride reflecting both infernal resolve and mortal adaptability.

Darkvision

Infernal blood grants your eyes an uncanny ability to pierce darkness. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Brightwater Resolve

Your Brightwater lineage has forged an indomitable will. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened. In addition, generations spent among abyssal basilisks have left a subtle mark on your blood. Your DM may grant advantage on saving throws against petrification when appropriate.

Eyes Beyond the Veil

You know the thaumaturgy cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the detect thoughts spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. When you reach 5th level, you can cast the sending spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Infernal. Some Brightwaters also preserve the ancient tongue known as Brightspeech, a secret language passed down through family traditions. Whether a character knows Brightspeech is determined by their background and the DM.

Brightspeech is not a separate language so much as a layered way of speaking. To outsiders it sounds like Common, Elvish, or Infernal, but Brightwaters weave subtle emphasis, phrasing, and idioms into their words that carry hidden meaning. A single conversation can hold two messages—one for everyone, and one understood only by another speaker of Brightspeech. No two Brightwaters speak Brightspeech in exactly the same way. Every generation adds new stories while preserving the old.
