Homebrew Covenantshade Species Details
Covenantshades are mutable humanoids whose bodies have been permanently altered by contact with an otherworldly pact. Some descend from mortals who bargained with Archfey, alien intelligences, infernal nobles, or living shadows. Others were deliberately created as spies, occult assassins, and collectors of forbidden secrets.
A Covenantshade can reshape its body, reproduce another person’s voice, vanish through darkness, and exploit the supernatural bonds created by its magic. Their identities are rarely permanent. Names, faces, and loyalties are tools to be selected according to the mission.
Covenantshade Traits
Darkvision, shapechanging, and psychic abilitiesDarkvision
You have Darkvision with a range of 60 feet.
Mutable Vessel
As an action, you physically transform your appearance. You determine the details of the transformation, including your facial features, voice, coloration, hair, apparent ancestry, height, weight, and sex.
You must retain the same basic arrangement of limbs, and your size does not change. Your clothing and equipment do not transform.
You can imitate the voice of a creature after listening to it speak for at least 1 minute. A creature suspicious of your disguise can make a Wisdom (Insight) check contested by your Charisma (Deception) check.
This transformation is physical rather than magical. It cannot be detected by Detect Magic, ended by Dispel Magic, or suppressed by an Antimagic Field.
You remain transformed until you use this trait again or die.
Covenant Ambush
When you hit a creature with an attack roll, you can invoke this trait if at least one of the following conditions is true:
- You were hidden from the creature when you made the attack.
- The creature is Charmed or Frightened by you.
- The creature is affected by a spell you cast.
- The creature is marked or cursed by one of your features.
The attack deals an additional 1d6 Psychic or Necrotic damage, chosen when you deal the damage. The creature also cannot make Opportunity Attacks until the start of your next turn.
You can use Covenant Ambush only once per turn. You can use it a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus, regaining all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.
Gloamstep
As a Bonus Action, you teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see.
Your destination must meet at least one of the following conditions:
- It is in Dim Light or Darkness.
- It is within 5 feet of a creature affected by a spell you cast.
- It is within 5 feet of a creature marked or cursed by you.
After you teleport, you have Advantage on the next Dexterity (Stealth) check you make before the end of your next turn.
You can use Gloamstep a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus, regaining all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.
Veiled Magic
You know the Minor Illusion cantrip.
Starting at character level 3, you can cast Disguise Self with this trait without expending a spell slot.
Starting at character level 5, you can cast Invisibility with this trait without expending a spell slot. When cast with this trait, Invisibility can target only you.
Once you cast Disguise Self or Invisibility with this trait, you cannot cast that spell with this trait again until you finish a Long Rest. You can also cast either spell using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level.
Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
Whisper Through the Veil
You can telepathically communicate with one creature you can see within 30 feet of yourself. You do not need to share a language, but the creature must understand at least one language.
Your communication is one-way unless the creature also possesses telepathy or another ability that allows it to respond mentally.
