Homebrew Blood Fairy Species Details

The Feywild is home to many fantastic peoples, including fairies. Blood Fairies, a darker variant of the fair folk, are infused with the sinister magic of the Unseelie Court. These Fairies are among the larger of the fairy folk, standing between two and three feet tall. Though diminutive by mortal standards, they tower over many pixies and sprites. The first fairies spoke Elvish, Goblin, or Sylvan, and encounters with human visitors prompted many of them to learn Common as well.

Infused with the dark magic of the Unseelie Court, most Blood Fairies look like Small elves with insectile wings, but each fairy has a special physical characteristic that sets them apart. For your fairy, roll on the Blood Fairy Characteristics table or choose an option from it. You’re also free to come up with your own characteristic if none of the suggestions below fit your character.

Creating Your Character

Ability Score Increases

When determining your character’s ability scores, increase one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. Follow this rule regardless of the method you use to determine the scores, such as rolling or point buy. The “Quick Build” section for your character’s class offers suggestions on which scores to increase. You can follow those suggestions or ignore them, but you can’t raise any of your scores above 20.

Languages

Your character can speak, read, and write Common and one other language that you and your DM agree is appropriate for the character. The Player’s Handbook offers a list of languages to choose from. The DM is free to modify that list for a campaign.

Creature Type

Your creature type is Fey.

Life Span

Blood Fairies mature at the same rate as humans but can live up to 500 years, though they show little signs of aging until the final stages of their lives.

Height and Weight

Blood Fairies are about 2 to 3 feet tall and weigh between 20 and 40 pounds. Your size is Small.

Blood Fairy Traits

Fairy Magic

You know the Druidcraft cantrip.

Starting at 3rd level, you can cast Faerie Fire once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Starting at 5th level, you can cast Darkness once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest.

Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells when you cast them with this trait (choose when you select this race).

Flight

Because of your wings, you have a flying speed equal to your walking speed. You can’t use this flying speed if you’re wearing medium or heavy armor.

Blood Magic

When you cast a spell using a spell slot, you can choose to take necrotic damage equal to your proficiency bonus. This damage can't be reduced or prevented in any way. If you do, add your proficiency bonus to one damage roll or healing roll of that spell. Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you finish a Long Rest.

Blood Feast

Starting at 3rd level, you can drink the blood of a willing or incapacitated creature within 5 feet of you as a bonus action. When you do, you gain temporary hit points equal to twice your proficiency bonus. Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you finish a Long Rest.

Superior Invisibility

Starting at 7th level, you can magically turn invisible until you attack, cast a spell, or deal damage to a creature. Any equipment you are wearing or carrying is invisible with you. Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you finish a short rest.
