Homebrew Charcharis Species Details
Master of the Depths. Born from the fierce legacy of the deep ocean, the Charcharis are humanoid hybrids that embody the perfect design of the shark. With dense muscular frames, rough sandpaper-like skin, and rows of razor-sharp teeth, they are heavily built for survival in the harshest aquatic environments. While their heavy bodies make them slightly slower on land, they move through the water with terrifying, graceful speed.
The Electric Hunt. A Charcharis does not just rely on sight or smell to find its quarry. Rows of microscopic sensory pores across their face grant them an advanced form of electro-reception. This allows them to read the invisible electrical impulses of living, moving creatures in the air, a sense that becomes twice as potent when submerged in water. Combined with a jaw capable of crushing armor, very few targets escape them once a hunt begins.
Bound to the Waves. Despite their prowess, the Charcharis carry a heavy burden when walking the surface world. Their skin and flesh are deeply dependent on constant moisture. A Charcharis traveling inland must always be near a water source or carry heavy rations of fluid, as a single day of severe dehydration will dry their muscles and sap their legendary strength, leaving them completely vulnerable.
Charcharis Traits
Charcharis possesses a variety of innate traits, granted by an apex predator ancestry engineered for underwater tracking, heavy physical endurance.Electro-Reception
- Rows of microscopic, gel-filled sensory pores across your snout grant you the ability to detect the faint bio-electric fields generated by living things. This specialized sense allows you to navigate and hunt with absolute precision, even when blinded, underwater, or plunged into total darkness.
You gain Blindsight out to a range of 15 feet. While you are completely submerged in water, your conductivity increases, expanding the range of this blindsight to 30 feet.
Within this radius, you can perceive your surroundings and pinpoint the exact location of any creature without relying on sight. This allows you to ignore the mechanical penalties of blindness, heavy obscurity, or the Invisibility spell regarding targets in your range.
Limitations: Because this sense relies on the muscle contractions and nervous system activity of your prey, it only detects creatures that are currently moving. Completely stationary targets cannot be perceived using this trait. Additionally, you cannot utilize this sense if you are incapacitated.
Hydration Dependency
- Your shark-like anatomy and thick skin require constant moisture to function properly outside of the ocean. Your muscles and flesh are deeply dependent on being regularly saturated, making long treks away from fresh or salt water a dangerous endeavor.
You must consume a sufficient amount of water (or a water-based liquid) on a regular basis. If you go 24 hours without proper hydration, your body enters a severe state of dehydration.
While dehydrated, your skin cracks, your muscles lock up, and your primary ability scores (Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma) are all temporarily halved (rounded down). This debilitating effect lasts until you are fully submerged in water or consume enough liquid to completely rehydrate yourself.
Jaws
- Your powerful, unhinging jaw is lined with rows of serrated, razor-sharp teeth engineered to crush and tear through the toughest prey. These jaws function as a formidable natural weapon, which you can use to make unarmed strikes.
If you hit with your bite attack, you deal piercing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for a standard unarmed strike.
