Homebrew Chomper Species Details

Chompers are massive, sentient plantfolk defined by their appetites and hunting instincts. To an outsider, a sleeping Chomper looks like little more than an oversized, exotic purple egg-plant anchored to the soil. However, beneath that exterior lies a stealth predator.

Unlike many territorial beasts, Chompers are dead silent. They stalk their prey by sensing vibrations traveling through the earth, and tracking the heartbeat and footsteps of unsuspecting creatures. Once a target draws near, a Chomper strikes, erupting from burrows or dense undergrowth to swallow their prey whole.

Behavior

Chompers operate on primal instinct and surprising cunning. While individual Chompers can seem blunt or overly focused on their next meal, they possess a keen tactical awareness. In combat, they act as ambushers, using sticky goop to immobilize fleeing targets so they can close the distance.

Lacking traditional eyes, Chompers perceive the world entirely through scent, texture, and vibrations. They communicate through snapping their jaws, and rustling their thick leaves.

Despite their ferocious reputation, Chompers form strong protective bonds with those they consider part of their garden. An ally standing next to a Chomper has a partner willing to swallow a dragon's breath to protect the group.

Chomper Traits

As a Chomper, you gain the following traits.

Creature Type

You are a plant.

Size

You are Medium (6 - 8 feet tall).

Speed

You have a Walk speed of 30 feet and a Burrow speed of 15 feet.

Blindsight 40ft.

You have no eyes and cannot see normally. Instead, you perceive your surroundings through chemoreceptors across your skin. You are blind beyond a 40-foot radius, but within this radius, you effectively see your environment and automatically succeed on saving throws against illusions.

Age

Chompers mature quickly, reaching full hunting size within 3 years of sprouting. A Chomper can live for 300 to 500 years if its roots stay healthy and well-nourished.

Languages

Using your leaves and jaw, you can speak, read and write Common.

Natural Resistance

You have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned, and you have resistance to poison damage.

Chomp

Your toothy maw is a natural weapon, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with it, you deal piercing damage equal to 1d8 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage of a normal unarmed strike.

Swallow

While you are grappling a creature of your size or smaller, you can use an action to attempt to swallow it. The target must succeed on a Strength saving throw (DC = 8 + Proficiency Bonus + your Strength modifier) or be swallowed into your stomach.

While swallowed, the target is Restrained and has total cover against attacks and other effects outside of you.

The target takes acid damage equal to 2d6 + your character level at the start of each of its turns.

The target can attempt to escape the grapple using its action on its turn against your Strength (Athletics) check. If it succeeds, it escapes your maw and appears in an unoccupied space adjacent to you.

You can only have one creature swallowed at a time.

Devour

When you reduce a creature to 0 hit points with a melee attack roll, or it is reduced to 0 hit points in your stomach, you can use your reaction to instantly digest it.

The creature and all of its nonmagical equipment are completely consumed and destroyed. The creature cannot be revived by spells that require a corpse.

Sticky Goop

As a bonus action, you spit an incredibly sticky purple substance at a target within 30 feet. Make a ranged attack roll, if it hits, the target's movement speed is reduced to 0 until the start of your next turn.

Alternatively, you can expend a use  to launch Goop at a point on the ground within 30 feet, creating a 10-foot radius of sticky difficult terrain until the start of your next turn.

You can use this ability a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus.
