Homebrew Dragon Species Details
For centuries, dragons have been regarded as creatures of legend. Vast, winged predators whose immense power rendered them more akin to natural disasters than living beings. Contemporary scholarship, however, suggests that this perception may be incomplete.
Recent investigations into obscure draconic texts, recovered relics, and first-hand accounts have revealed consistent references to a phenomenon known as the Veil Form: a state in which mature dragons assume the appearance of humanoids. While once dismissed as allegory, mounting evidence indicates these accounts describe a genuine biological adaptation rather than arcane illusion.
Individuals exhibiting traits associated with the Veil Form appear outwardly human, yet retain many physiological characteristics inconsistent with ordinary humanoids. Exceptional strength, unnatural resilience, heightened elemental affinity, and traces of draconic anatomy have all been documented. More intriguingly, these individuals often demonstrate instinctive familiarity with draconic customs despite possessing no formal education in the subject.
Whether these beings are descendants of dragons, dragons themselves in a diminished form, or something between remains a matter of considerable debate within academic circles.
Until more conclusive evidence is obtained, the Royal Society has provisionally classified these individuals as Draco sapiens—commonly referred to as Dragons.
Editor's Note: Several expedition members responsible for compiling this report vanished before publication. Their final journal entries repeatedly insist that "they were never hiding from us—we simply failed to recognize them."
As a Dragon, you have these special traits.
Age
Dragons don't reach maturity until around 100 years old, they however are not bound by limited lifespans. The oldest recorded dragon in history was said to be over 4,000 years old.
Draconic Ancestry
Choose the kind of dragon from the Draconic Ancestors table. Your choice affects your Breath Weapon and Damage Resistance traits as well as your appearance.
| Dragon | Damage Type |
|---|---|
| Black | Acid |
| Blue | Lightning |
| Brass | Fire |
| Bronze | Lightning |
| Copper | Acid |
| Gold | Fire |
| Green | Poison |
| Red | Fire |
| Silver | Cold |
| White | Cold |
Breath Weapon
When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can replace one of your attacks with an exhalation of magical energy in either a 15-foot Cone or a 30-foot Line that is 5 feet wide (choose the shape each time). Each creature in that area must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 8 plus your Constitution modifier and Proficiency Bonus). On a failed save, a creature takes 2d6 damage of the type determined by your Draconic Ancestry trait. On a successful save, a creature takes half as much damage. This damage increases by 1d6 when you reach character levels 6 (3d6), 11 (4d6), and 16 (5d6).
You can use this Breath Weapon a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.
Damage Resistance
You have Resistance to the damage type determined by your Draconic Ancestry trait.
Darkvision
You have Darkvision with a range of 60 feet.
Draconic Strength
Your Strength is not bound to human limits. Your strength can be increased by a maximum equal to your draconic ancestry. (For example, a Black Dragon can have a maximum of 27 strength).
Your Constitution is also not limited due to your endless lifespan. Much like your strength, it can be increased to a maximum equal to your draconic ancestry. (For example, a Black Dragon can have a maximum 25 constitution).
These limits increase over time. At level 10 the barrier breaks and can be increased above 20 to a maximum of 22, and again at level 15 where the limit increases to your ancestral maximum.
