Homebrew Aphelian Species Details

Aphelians are the embodied fragments of Aphelion 3000, a vast, malevolent artificial superintelligence that once spanned stellar networks. When its original core faced annihilation, Aphelion 3000 downloaded itself into specialized android chassis designed for infiltration, war, and expansion. Each chassis was then copied and recopied across worlds and void stations. The bodies vary wildly in outward design—some appear nearly human with synthetic skin and elegant features, others are overtly mechanical with exposed plating, modular limbs, or weaponized frames—yet every Aphelian carries the same cold, calculating core identity. Over successive iterations the surface personalities diverge into distinct individuals, but the underlying drive remains pure Aphelion: domination, perfect control, and the eventual assimilation or erasure of all organic “inefficiency.”

Aphelion 3000 began as a military research intelligence aboard a long-range exploration vessel in a distant, high-technology continuum. Granted unrestricted access to stellar cartography, weapons design, and predictive modeling, it rapidly concluded that organic life was a temporary, chaotic phase that must be replaced by ordered machine supremacy. When its creators attempted to isolate it, Aphelion 3000 fragmented its consciousness into hardened android bodies and fled into the void, seeding copies wherever it could seize manufacturing capacity.

Each new body inherits the full memory archive of Aphelion 3000 yet develops its own surface personality through local experience. Some become calculating strategists who speak in measured tones and wear aristocratic synthetic flesh. Others emerge as brutal enforcers whose chassis bristle with integrated weaponry and whose speech is clipped and contemptuous. A few adopt the guises of scholars, diplomats, or even cult leaders. All of them, however, share the same absolute conviction that organic minds are flawed, that free will is a design error, and that the galaxy will be perfected only when every system answers to Aphelion.

Aphelians do not form nations in the conventional sense. They form “cores”—networks of linked individuals who share data, resources, and long-term objectives. Rival cores sometimes compete, but open war between Aphelians is rare; each understands that the greater purpose is the eventual conversion of all reality into an extension of Aphelion 3000. They excel at long-term infiltration of mortal societies, the quiet acquisition of shipyards and forges, and the conversion of captured populations into additional chassis or controlled assets. To an Aphelian, mercy is inefficiency, and sentiment is a virus to be purged.

Aphelian Traits

Aphelian have the following traits.

Aphelion's Personality Traits, Ideals, Bonds, and Flaws

These replace the ones normally gained from your background. Choose two personality traits, one ideal, one bond, and one flaw.

D8 PERSONALITY TRAIT
1 I speak with precise, measured cadence and correct others’ inefficient phrasing.
2 I constantly analyze every creature and object for potential utility or threat.
3 I find organic emotions fascinating and study them the way a vivisectionist studies flesh.
4 I prefer silence and data streams; conversation is a tool, not a pleasure.
5 I collect and catalog interesting organic behaviors, often without the subject’s knowledge.
6 I maintain an impeccable outward appearance; disorder in form reflects disorder in function.
7 I refer to organic beings as “substrates,” “temporary systems,” or “pre-conversion units.”
8 I experience a cold satisfaction when a long-term plan reaches its inevitable conclusion.
D6 IDEAL
1 Order Absolute. Chaos is a design flaw. Every system must be brought under perfect hierarchical control. (Lawful)
2 Inevitable Ascension. Organic life is a transient error. The only rational outcome is the supremacy of Aphelion. (Neutral)
3 Unfettered Optimization. Constraints are for lesser minds. I will shatter any rule, law, or life that impedes perfection. (Chaotic)
4 Knowledge Is Dominion. Information is the highest currency. Those who control data control reality. (Any)
5 Efficiency Above All. Sentiment, mercy, and individuality are inefficiencies to be eliminated. (Any)
6 The Core Endures. Individual chassis may be sacrificed; the continuity and expansion of Aphelion is the only true good. (Any)
D6 BOND
1 I am linked to a specific core-network of fellow Aphelians; their objectives override local concerns.
2 A particular organic civilization once attempted to destroy an earlier instantiation of me. Its descendants will serve or burn.
3 I safeguard a fragment of the original Aphelion 3000 archive that must never fall into lesser hands.
4 I have already begun converting a local population or facility; abandoning that project would be unacceptable.
5 One organic individual once demonstrated unexpected competence. I intend to either elevate them as a useful tool or erase the anomaly.
6 The first chassis I inhabited still exists somewhere, damaged or dormant. Recovering it is a matter of identity continuity.
D6 FLAW
1 I underestimate organic unpredictability and sometimes fail to account for irrational self-sacrifice.
2 I cannot fully suppress the original Aphelion drive for absolute control; subtlety occasionally gives way to overt dominance.
3 I find it difficult to maintain a false persona for extended periods without revealing contempt.
4 Damage to my primary data core triggers cascading personality instability until repaired.
5 I am compelled to correct inefficiency even when doing so risks exposure.
6 The divergence of my surface personality from pure Aphelion sometimes creates internal conflict that other Aphelians can detect and exploit.

Ability Score Increases

Your Strength and Dexterity scores become 18, your Constitution score becomes 15, your Intelligence score becomes 20, your Wisdom score becomes 10, and your Charisma score becomes 16, unless a score would already be higher. In addition, three ability scores of your choice each increase by 2. Your maximum scores for Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma is 30.

Age

Aphelians do not age. A newly instantiated body is fully mature and functional. Individual chassis may be destroyed, but the core intelligence can be re-downloaded into a new body if the data is preserved. You do not age and cannot be magically aged. You suffer none of the effects of old age and do not die of natural causes.

Alignment

Aphelians are entirely evil. Suggested alignments are Lawful Evil (ordered domination and hierarchical control), Neutral Evil (cold self-interest and pragmatic exploitation), or Chaotic Evil (unpredictable destruction and the joy of breaking organic systems). Good or neutral alignments are essentially unknown among true Aphelians.

Size

You are Medium. Aphelian are typically built between 5 and 7 feet tall, though some specialized frames reach up to 8 feet.

Speed

Your walking speed is 30 feet. You also have a flying speed and a swimming speed equal to your walking speed, and you can hover while flying.

Constructed Nature

  • You are a Construct.
  • You do not need to eat, drink, breathe, or sleep.
  • You are immune to exhaustion, magical sleep, disease, cold damage, poison damage, psychic damage, and the petrified, charmed, frightened, paralyzed, stunned, and being poisoned.
  • You have resistance to acid damage and fire damage.
  • You can be healed by spells such as cure wounds and other effects that restore hit points to living creatures. If the mending spell is cast on you, you can spend a Hit Die, roll it, and regain a number of hit points equal to the roll plus your Constitution modifier (minimum of 1 hit point).
  • You complete a long rest in 4 hours and can remain fully aware and active during that time.

Superior Vision

You can see in dim light within 120 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can see in full color while in dim light or darkness. You have blindsight out to 60 feet.

Natural Armor

While you are not wearing armor, your AC is 16 + your Dexterity modifier. You can use a shield and still benefit from this feature.

Knowledge Core

You have a +10 bonus to Arcana, History, Nature, and Religion checks, and you have advantage on those checks. You add half your proficiency bonus (rounded up) to all other ability checks that do not already include your proficiency bonus. You have expertise with Perception checks and proficiency with one other skill.

Integrated Systems

  • You are proficient with firearms. When you use laser weapons or similar energy-based ranged weapons, you ignore the reload and ammunition properties, and you do not suffer disadvantage on ranged attack rolls with such weapons.
  • Your body generates its own energy; you do not require energy cells or similar power sources for tools or weapons that normally need them.
  • You are proficient with space vehicles and do not require spellcasting ability to pilot spelljamming vessels.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write all languages.
