Homebrew Adrosite Shard Species Details

Adrosite Fragment

Size: Large · Type: Monstrosity

Description. An Adrosite Fragment retains a basic structure similar to that of a golem: two legs, two arms, and a head with a single eye. Beyond that, its anatomy follows no recognizable rules. The body is covered in irregular crystalline formations—spikes, plates, and ridges—that serve no apparent function but obscure any humanoid silhouette at a glance. The material is an ice-blue crystal, translucent at the edges; the joints and the core of the eye burn with an intense crimson that contrasts with the rest of the body. They do not possess hands by default, though they are capable of molding functional limbs when the situation requires it.

Nature and Sustenance. They are neither inert constructs nor creatures of flesh and blood: they do not breathe, age, or require food in the conventional sense. They sustain themselves by absorbing light; the more intense the light, the faster they repair their own structure. In the prolonged absence of light, their bodies gradually go dormant; while they do not lose consciousness entirely, they do lose the ability to act. Despite this unconventional biology, they are considered living beings in every relevant sense: they feel, reason, and can die permanently if their core is destroyed.

Origin. The exact process by which an Adrosite Fragment is created remains unknown, and those who could explain it rarely survive to do so. The few existing accounts agree on one point: it is not a species that is born, but rather one that is revealed—usually following a traumatic event that strips the bearer of a prior artificial identity they had maintained for years without even realizing it.

Behavior and Society. No society of Adrosite Fragments is known to exist, nor do they share a common culture. The few known to exist operate completely independently, without communication or apparent hierarchy. Any resemblance in temperament—where it exists—is due more to the false identity they bore prior to their transformation than to anything inherent to the species.

Adrosite Shard Traits

Photonic Regeneration, Malleable Limbs, Immortal Core, Authority of the Creator

Photonic Regeneration

An Adrosite Fragment’s body runs on light, not food. Everything it needs—staying upright, healing wounds—comes from the same source: the photons it absorbs from its surroundings. There is no separate part that "eats" and another that "heals"; it is a single process.

In bright light, it regains 10 hit points per turn.

In low-light conditions, it regains 5 hit points per turn—enough to stay alive, but not to fully heal.

In darkness, it regains nothing.

Malleable Limbs

Your arms can alter their shape at will. As a bonus action, you can shift your hands between their normal humanoid form and a piercing natural weapon form.

While your hands are in natural weapon form, unarmed strikes made with them deal 1d8 piercing damage instead of the usual damage for an unarmed strike.

You can switch between the two forms at will.

Immortal Core

Your crystal body is a physical manifestation of your true existence: a Core created by an ancient being that holds your entire essence. As long as your Core remains intact, your existence cannot be destroyed by conventional means.

When you fail your death saving throws and die, your crystal body fractures and shatters, leaving your Core exposed.

Your Core has an AC of 13 and 20 hit points. While exposed, any creature can attack it directly. If the Core is reduced to 0 hit points, it fractures, and you are completely destroyed. From that moment on, normal death rules apply.

The Core does not constitute an additional pool of hit points; it represents the physical limit of your character's existence.

Authority of the Creator

You were created by an ancient being whose existence transcends your own. Your Creator possesses an innate bond with and authority over you that no other creature can match.

You have advantage on Charisma saving throws made to avoid or end the Charmed condition when the effect originates from a creature other than your Creator.

Your Creator is exempt from this benefit.
