Homebrew Dewari Species Details
_*Dewari — Lore Summary*_
*🌿 Origin*
The Dewari are magical beings native to the Feywild. They are not born from parents and do not reproduce in the traditional sense.
In places where the magic of the Feywild is especially strong, that magic can gather within the natural world.
On rare occasions, magical dew collects upon plants, flowers, and leaves, and when the right conditions are met, the droplets begin to gather together and form a living creature.
This is how a new Dewari comes into existence.
The place where a Dewari first forms is called their Dewen.
A Dewen is deeply personal and sacred to the Dewari who was created there. The Feywild itself seems to protect these places, making them difficult to harm or destroy.
Dewen are usually found in particularly magical areas of nature, such as enchanted forests, ancient gardens, magical springs, or other places where Feywild magic runs strong.
The creation of a Dewari is relatively rare.
In a typical Dewari community or village, a new Dewari might form only once every 30–50 years, though this is only an average and can vary greatly.

*🫧 Childhood and Growth*
Young Dewari begin their lives as small, shapeless masses of living slime.
They cannot immediately maintain a humanoid form and gradually learn to shape their bodies by observing and imitating the Dewari around them.
Their growth is connected to their Dewen.
On each birthday, a young Dewari returns to the place where they were created and gathers a small amount of magical dew.
The dew is absorbed into their body and allows them to continue growing and developing.
This process is not perfectly predictable.
The amount and strength of the magical dew can vary from year to year, meaning that every Dewari develops at their own pace.
Two Dewari created around the same time may reach maturity at very different ages.
Most Dewari reach full physical maturity at around 80 years old, although there is no exact age at which a Dewari becomes an adult.
Once a Dewari reaches maturity, they no longer need magical dew to continue growing.
They may still return to their Dewen on their birthdays, but the tradition is no longer necessary for their physical development.
Instead, it becomes a celebration of their origins and their connection to the place that first gave them life.
-------------------------------
*🌈 Color and Emotion*
Every Dewari has a natural color of their own. This is the color their body normally displays when they are calm, and each Dewari's natural color is different.
However, strong emotions can cause a Dewari's body to change color completely.
This is not a deliberate ability. Their bodies simply respond to their emotions.
Young Dewari learn to recognize these changes long before they learn to speak or properly control their own shape.
Because of this, most Dewari grow up with a naturally strong emotional awareness and an unusual ability to understand the feelings of others.
To a Dewari, seeing another Dewari change color is completely ordinary. They don't consider it a secret language or a special ability—it is simply another natural way their bodies express emotion.
Being emotionally perceptive does not mean every Dewari is kind or compassionate. Dewari can be selfish, cruel, generous, mischievous, shy, or anything else. They simply tend to understand what others are feeling better than most people do.
-------------------------------
*🧚 Culture and Society*
Most Dewari are sociable, curious, and emotionally perceptive.
Because they learn to recognize emotions from such a young age, they tend to be attentive to the people around them.
A Dewari may notice that something is wrong with a friend before that friend even realizes they are showing signs of distress.
Despite this, Dewari are not all naturally outgoing or kind.
Emotional understanding and compassion are not the same thing.
Dewari are a natural part of the Feywild, but they are not among its most numerous or famous peoples.
Some Fey know them well and consider them familiar inhabitants of the wilds, while others may go their entire lives without encountering one.
-------------------------------
*🌱 The Dewen*
A Dewen is more than simply the birthplace of a Dewari.
It is considered a part of that Dewari's identity.
Destroying or deliberately harming another Dewari's Dewen is considered one of the greatest crimes in Dewari culture.
A Dewen is not only the place where someone was created—it is also the source from which they received the magic that allowed them to grow.
The Feywild naturally protects these places, but Dewari communities take their protection extremely seriously as well.
For a young Dewari, the destruction of their Dewen can have an especially devastating consequence: without access to its magical dew, they cannot continue growing until they eventually return to the Feywild and find a way to reconnect with their source.
-------------------------------
*💧 The Tradition of the Dew*
The yearly gathering of dew is an ancient tradition, but it also exists because of a cautionary tale.
Long ago, several Dewari became obsessed with becoming larger and stronger.
Rather than waiting for their yearly birthday, they gathered magical dew constantly, day and night, attempting to force their bodies to grow beyond their natural limits.
Eventually, their bodies could no longer contain the amount of Feywild magic they had accumulated, and they burst apart, becoming nothing more than scattered magical slime.
The story became a warning passed down through generations:
The Feywild gives freely, but even magic has its limits.
Since then, Dewari have traditionally gathered dew only once each year, on their birthday.
The practice is both a means of regulating their growth and a reminder of the danger of trying to force the Feywild beyond its natural balance.
-------------------------------
*♾️ Old Age*
Dewari live for a very long time, typically around 500–600 years, though some may live longer.
As a Dewari reaches extreme old age, they gradually begin to lose their ability to maintain a humanoid shape.
At first, they may have difficulty keeping parts of their body together.
Over time, maintaining a solid-looking form becomes increasingly difficult until eventually they can no longer hold one at all.
An elderly Dewari eventually returns to their natural state: a simple mass of living slime.
Rather than being considered a traditional death, this is often described by Dewari as "returning to the Feywild."
The earth eventually absorbs the remaining slime, returning the Dewari's magic to the land and enriching the Feywild around it.
In this way, the life of a Dewari begins with the Feywild, is sustained by the Feywild, and eventually returns to it.
