Homebrew 🩸 Dhampir Species Details

Dhampirs exist on the boundary between mortality and vampirism, carrying supernatural power within their blood while retaining a mortal heart. Some are born with this strange heritage, while others become Dhampirs after surviving a vampire's bite, a dark ritual, a curse, or an encounter with powerful undead magic.

Their vampiric nature grants them heightened senses, unnatural agility, the ability to climb like a creature of the night, and a powerful connection to blood. Their bodies are more resistant to the forces of death than those of ordinary mortals, yet they remain living Humanoids rather than true Undead.

Unlike true vampires, Dhampirs do not suffer from sunlight sensitivity. They can walk freely beneath the sun, enter homes without invitation, benefit normally from healing magic, and aren't affected by abilities that specifically target Undead.

However, their gifts come with a price: the Hunger.

A Dhampir can survive on ordinary food and drink, but something deeper within them craves living blood. Ignoring that hunger for too long can make their vampiric instincts increasingly difficult to suppress.

Every Dhampir chooses how they respond to this darker nature. Some use their abilities to protect others and hunt the monsters they resemble. Others embrace their predatory instincts, using their supernatural gifts for personal power. Many exist somewhere between the two — capable of compassion, loyalty and heroism while carrying a darkness they cannot completely escape.

Within Barovia, being a Dhampir carries even greater significance. The land itself seems to recognise the vampiric blood flowing through their veins. Undead creatures may react strangely to their presence, vampires may recognise their nature, and the powers surrounding Barovia may take an unusual interest in them.

And there is one creature in Barovia who is unlikely to mistake a Dhampir for an ordinary mortal:

Strahd von Zarovich.
