Homebrew πŸ€ Giant Rat Species Details

Giant Rats are hardy and surprisingly intelligent creatures that have learned to survive in some of the most inhospitable places imaginable. In Icewind Dale, they make their homes beneath ruined buildings, inside forgotten tunnels, under frozen streets and within caves protected from the relentless winds above.

Covered in thick, coarse fur, an Icewind Dale Giant Rat is better suited to the freezing climate than its smaller southern relatives. Its powerful claws grip slippery surfaces, while its sharp teeth can tear through food, leather and anything unfortunate enough to become prey

πŸ€ Giant Rat Traits

As a Giant Rat, you possess a collection of natural adaptations developed through generations of surviving in dark tunnels, forgotten ruins and the frozen wilderness of Icewind Dale. Your small size hides impressive speed and resilience, while your keen senses allow you to notice dangers that larger creatures might completely overlook. Your sharp teeth provide you with a natural weapon, and your flexible body allows you to slip through narrow spaces and dart between larger creatures. Life in the frozen north has also made you remarkably comfortable in bitterly cold environments. These traits represent the Giant Rat's greatest strengths: agility, heightened senses, resourcefulness and survival.

πŸ‘οΈ Darkvision β€” 60 ft.

You can see in dim light within 60 feet as though it were bright light, and darkness as though it were dim light. In darkness, you see only shades of grey.

🐽 Keen Smell

You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks relying on smell.

πŸ‘‚ Sharp Senses.

You gain proficiency in Perception. If you already have Perception proficiency from another source, choose Investigation or Survival instead.

πŸ•³οΈ Rat Squeeze.

You can move through passages and openings suitable for a Tiny creature without suffering the normal penalties for squeezing, provided your equipment can fit.

🐾 Skitter

You can move through the space of a creature at least one size larger than you. You cannot willingly end your turn there.

❄️ Arctic Adaptation.

You are naturally acclimated to extreme cold. This doesn't give you resistance to magical or other cold damage.

πŸ—‘οΈ Scavenger.

You gain proficiency in Investigation. You are particularly adept at finding small, concealed or discarded objects while searching ruins, rubbish, abandoned camps and similar locations.

πŸ€ Level 5 β€” Tunnel Runner

Your movement increases from 35 ft. β†’ 40 ft.

Additionally, nonmagical difficult terrain caused by rubble, cramped tunnels, snow or ice costs you no additional movement.

πŸ‘ƒ Level 7 β€” Superior Nose

Your sense of smell becomes exceptionally powerful.

Your Keen Smell can identify familiar creatures by scent, and you have advantage on Survival checks made to track a creature by scent.

You can normally determine the general direction of a noticeable scent within 30 ft., although sealed environments, powerful competing smells and similar circumstances can interfere.

πŸ‘οΈ Level 9 β€” Improved Darkvision

Your Darkvision increases:

πŸ‘οΈ 60 ft. β†’ 90 ft.

Your eyes have become exceptionally well adapted to Icewind Dale's long nights and underground environments.

πŸ€ Level 11 β€” Evasive Skitter

Your instincts make you incredibly difficult to pin down.

When a creature misses you with a melee attack, you can use your reaction to move up to 10 ft.

This movement doesn't provoke an opportunity attack from that creature.

You can use Evasive Skitter a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus, regaining all uses after a Long Rest.

πŸ‘‚ Level 13 β€” Predator’s Sense

Your hearing and sense of smell have become powerful enough to warn you of creatures you cannot clearly see.

You gain Blindsight 10 ft.

This represents your keen hearing, whiskers, and sense of smell, rather than supernatural vision.

You cannot use this Blindsight if you are both deafened and unable to smell.

❄️ Level 15 β€” Iceborn Survivor

Your lifetime in the frozen wilderness has hardened your body.

You gain Resistance to Cold damage.

You also have advantage on saving throws against effects that would cause you to gain Exhaustion as a direct result of environmental cold.

πŸ‘οΈ Level 17 β€” Greater Darkvision

Your Darkvision increases again:

πŸ‘οΈ 90 ft. β†’ 120 ft.

Your Blindsight increases from 10 ft. β†’ 15 ft.

Even in almost complete darkness, very little nearby escapes your senses.

πŸ”Ž Level 19 β€” Master Scavenger πŸ€

Your ability to find hidden things has become extraordinary.

You gain Expertise in Investigation or Perception. Choose one in which you already have proficiency.

Additionally, when you make an Investigation or Perception check to find a hidden object, secret compartment, concealed passage, or physical trap, you can treat a d20 roll of 9 or lower as a 10.

πŸ€ Level 20 β€” Apex Survivor πŸ‘‘

You've become an extraordinary example of your species.

Your Blindsight increases to 20 ft.

Your movement speed increases:

🐾 40 ft. β†’ 45 ft.

Your Bite improves:

🦷 1d6 β†’ 1d8 piercing damage.
