Homebrew Boo Species Details

Boos are spectral beings found throughout the Mushroom Kingdom and many lands beyond it. Easily recognized by their round ghostly bodies, sharp fangs, and mischievous expressions, Boos are infamous for haunting mansions, castles, forests, and other places where an unexpected scare is never far away.

Despite their ghostly appearance, Boos are not necessarily the spirits of the departed. They are a people unto themselves, possessing personalities, relationships, communities, and ambitions just as varied as those of any other species. While many enjoy frightening unsuspecting travelers, a Boo's mischievous nature does not inherently make them malicious.

Boos possess naturally supernatural bodies. They effortlessly hover above the ground and can perform feats impossible for most physical creatures, such as vanishing from sight or briefly becoming incorporeal. Most Boos also possess an unusual instinctive shyness: when directly observed, they commonly hide their faces and become reluctant to move. Individual Boos vary greatly in how strongly this instinct affects them.

Adventuring Boos tend to be particularly curious, bold, or mischievous members of their kind. Some leave their usual haunts simply to see the world, while others seek treasure, companionship, excitement, or perhaps just new people to scare.

Boo Traits

As a Boo, you have the following species traits.

Spectral Nature

Your body is naturally spectral. You do not need to breathe, and you can hover. If you are knocked prone while flying, have your speed reduced to 0, or are otherwise deprived of the ability to move, you remain aloft rather than falling.

Darkvision

Accustomed to haunting dark and shadowy places, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of yourself as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness only as shades of gray.

Incorporeal Movement

As a Bonus Action, you can become incorporeal until the end of your current turn. During this time, you can move through other creatures and solid objects as if they were difficult terrain.

If you end your turn inside a creature or solid object, you are immediately shunted to the nearest unoccupied space and take force damage equal to twice your proficiency bonus.

You can use this trait a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.

Vanishing Act

As a Bonus Action, you can magically become Invisible until the start of your next turn. The invisibility ends early immediately after you make an attack roll, deal damage, or force a creature to make a saving throw.

Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you finish a Short or Long Rest.

BOO!

As an Action, choose one creature you can see within 30 feet of yourself that can see or hear you. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (DC 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier) or have the Frightened condition until the end of your next turn.

You can use this trait a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.
