Homebrew Hanu Species Details

Hanu are an enigmatic and confusing species. How they came to be is a mystery, one retold in countless and differing stories. Consistent across them all is an entity called the Trickster. In many of the stories, the Trickster despised what he saw as the 'burden' of civilization, believing mortals to lose themselves within growing layers of law, tradition, and bureaucracy. Thus were the Hanu created, in some stories revolutionaries against lawful oppression, and in others forces of raw chaos meant to drag mortalkind to a more primal state of being.

Fittingly, there is no one true story about the Trickster. Hanu culture is thus incredibly regional, and based entirely on which story and interpretation a given hanu believes in. Many passively adhere to the Trickster's principles, living among other humanoids and subtly working against the likes of conquerors and nobility. The most devout are extremists, either living in remote societies cut off from all urban corruption or becoming outright agents of change among other civilizations, often adapting a modified belief in Shuzi that posits him as a fragment of the Trickster.

Physically, hanu are humanoids that greatly resemble simians, with the usual arrangement of four limbs plus a prehensile tail that connects at the base of their spine. Their bodies are agile and covered in fur, and the feet of all hanu are more akin to hands, allowing them to climb with ease. Fitting for the creations of the Trickster, many hanu also possess supernatural reflexes, allowing them to duck away from missed attacks and deftly wield weapons in their tails.

Hanu Traits

Your character has the following traits as a Hanu.

Ability Score Increase

When determining your character’s ability scores, increase one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. Follow this rule regardless of the method you use to determine the scores, such as rolling or point buy. The “Quick Build” section for your character’s class offers suggestions on which scores to increase. You can follow those suggestions or ignore them, but you can’t raise any of your scores above 20.

Age

Hanu have lifespans equivalent to humans.

Alignment

As the creations of the Trickster, the Hanu were conceived to be chaos incarnate. Newer generations, especially those in metropolitan areas, have adopted more neutral beliefs.
