Homebrew Chameleoid Species Details
Chameleoids are the quintessential masters of camouflage. They live in sporadic pockets of small, tight knit communities dotted around the tropical forests. They are a kind people, and are welcoming to strangers. The challenge of gaining their hospitality however is finding them. These humanoid chameleons are able to hide in plain sight.
Hidden and Observant
Chameleoids use their remarkable camouflage to follow travelers through their forest homes, trailing from afar. Their large swiveling eyes allow them to study those that enter their territories. It is entirely possible to travel through a forest with hundreds of eyes watching, with not a single observer to be seen.
The brilliant shifting skin and scales of the Chameleoid is one of their most notable characteristics. They can be seen as any color or combination of colors imaginable, but when relaxed, they are typically a bright pastel green, red, orange, or light blue. Some Chameleoids have intricate patterns along their bodies made up of bright, striking colors of all kinds.
Chameleoids have enormous, bulbous eyes that protrude outward from their face. These huge eyes are often yellow, red, or jet black.
Chameleoid Traits
Chameleoids can blend in flawlessly with their surroundings, making them excellent at espianage and infiltration.Age
Chameleoids grow at roughly the same rate as humans, reaching maturity around the age of 30. They can live up to 300 years old.
Size
Chameleoids have long, slender torsos that give them a somewhat stretched profile. They stand between 7 to 8 feet tall and weigh between 175 to 250 pounds, but some Chameleoids can be as small as 4 feet tall and weigh under 75 pounds. Your size is medium or small.
Speed
Chameleoids are deliberate and careful with their movements, and they tend to move slowly to maintain their camouflage. You have a walking and climbing speed of 30 feet.
Languages
The Chameleoids speak a soft and quiet toned dialect of Common, almost as a perpetual whisper. You can speak, read, and write Common. Due to their habit of observing travelers through their lands, Chameleoids often pick up other languages. You may also choose a second language to understand.
Camouflage
A Chameleoid's skin is constantly shifting colors, continuously adapting to blend in with the surroundings. You have proficiency in Stealth.
Additionally, if a Chameleoid remains stationary for at least 30 seconds, they may become invisible for as long as they do not move at a pace more than half their walking speed. Attacking or casting a spell also breaks this invisibility. Anything worn or held by the Chameleoid also vanishes for the duration.
Swiveling Eyes
Chameleoids have two enormous swiveling eyes that can move independent of each other. You are able to maintain visual focus on two different things at once, even if they are in opposite directions. Because of this heightened awareness, Chameleoids have a +5 bonus to their passive perception.
Long Tongue
Chameleoids can use their long and sticky tongue to attack targets from afar. Once per turn, you may replace one of your attacks with an unarmed ranged attack with a reach of 30 feet. On a successful hit, the attack deals 1d6 acid damage. If the creature is Large or smaller, they must make a Strength Saving Throw (DC = 8 + you Proficiency bonus + your Strength modifier) or be pulled 10 feet closer to you.
