Homebrew Slimeborn Species Details

Slimeborn are self-aware people made of cohesive, translucent ooze. A spark of thought gathers their fluid bodies around a luminous nucleus, allowing them to maintain a humanoid shape, speak, and manipulate tools. They are people with distinct personalities, ambitions, and moral choices; their resemblance to dungeon slimes says nothing about their temperament.

A Body of Possibilities

Slimeborn range from clear turquoise to amber, violet, or moss green. Suspended bubbles and shifting streaks of color reveal their moods. Most form a head, two arms, and two legs, though their faces are expressive suggestions rather than fixed anatomy. They can wear ordinary armor and clothing in this form. A dropped limb dissolves into inert goo and cannot act independently.

Communities and Names

Some awaken in enchanted springs or abandoned alchemical works; others arise when a settled colony nurtures a new thinking nucleus. Awakening confers a new individual, not a duplicate of another Slimeborn. Their communities prize clean water, story exchanges, and patient craft. Many take names inspired by a first sensation or a treasured object: Ripple, Glimmer, Copper, Moss, or Chime. Adventurers often travel to gather experiences and return with stories for their pools.

Living Among Others

Slimeborn learn vocal speech by shaping a vibrating cavity within their bodies. They eat and drink normally, favoring softened foods, and need sleep and rest like other adventurers. Their bodies are safe to touch; their acid resistance does not grant an acid attack or dissolve equipment. They do not split into additional creatures, regenerate severed mass, engulf foes, or inherit the immunities of an ooze monster.

Slimeborn Traits

Your Slimeborn character has the following traits. These rules use the 2014 character-creation rules.

Ability Score Increase

Your Constitution score increases by 2, and your Dexterity score increases by 1. This species uses the 2014 ability-score rules. If using a 2024 background, omit these increases instead of applying both.

Ooze Nature

Your creature type is Ooze. Choose Small or Medium when you select this species; Reshape cannot change your size. Your walking speed is 30 feet.

You mature about 5 years after awakening and usually live 80 to 120 years. Slimeborn have no inherent alignment. You need food, water, sleep, and rest normally, and your body is safe to touch. You have no monster-ooze immunities, splitting, engulfing, regeneration, or acid attack.

Darkvision

You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. In darkness you discern colors only as shades of gray.

Amorphous

While wearing and carrying nothing, you can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing. You cannot carry objects through such a gap inside your body. This trait does not let you escape a grapple or restraints automatically.

Reshape

As an action, you can alter your color and cosmetic outline, or shift between a humanoid form and a limbless blob. You retain the same size and game statistics. In humanoid form you have a head, two arms with hands, and two legs, and can use ordinary equipment.

In blob form, you cannot wield weapons, use tools, or perform somatic spell components. You cannot create additional functional limbs, convincingly impersonate another creature through this trait alone, change your voice, or gain movement speeds. Worn and carried objects do not transform, merge into you, or disappear. Dropped pieces of your body become inert goo, not independent creatures.

Caustic Resilience

You have resistance to acid damage. This trait grants no acid attack, poison resistance, or additional ooze immunities.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language of your choice. You form a vibrating cavity in your ooze body to produce ordinary audible speech; this does not grant telepathy or mimicry.
