Homebrew Cephalite Species Details

Tentacles and Glass

From a distance, an octoid inside its clockwork chassis looks like a brass-and-steel automaton. Only when you look through the glass sphere connected directly to the suit's neck collar do you see the creature inside. Floating in a water-filled glass head-bowl, the octoid is barely 1 to 2 feet long with a soft, bone-free body.

Its skin can shift colors and textures to blend into its surroundings, just like a wild mimic octopus. Its head features large gold eyes and eight slender tentacles that twitch as it manipulates the submerged control levers inside its glass bowl to pilot the suit.

Laboratory Escapist

Having grown up in glass tanks and cages, the octoid views the outside world with a mix of intense curiosity and deep caution. In battle inside its suit, it relies on heavy brass armor, interlocking gears, and physical bulk to hold ground and cast spells safely from inside its mechanical shell.

The octoid rarely leaves its suit unless forced to or when stealth requires it. On land, it finds wide open spaces overwhelming and dry air dangerous to its bare skin.

Cephalopod Mannerisms

The octoid displays many natural octopus habits, like flexing its tentacles against the inside of the glass and constantly checking the pressure valves on its suit. When out of its suit, it naturally looks for dark, damp corners, tight alcoves, or small containers where it can feel secure.

The octoid speaks through a brass speaker mounted on the suit's collar, often using skin color changes inside the glass to add emphasis to its words. It sometimes gets frustrated when land-dwellers fail to notice these subtle visual cues.

The idea of owning land or setting borders baffles the octoid. Having been held as property in a lab, it finds the idea of anyone owning nature strange. It takes great care to keep its water levels filled to avoid drying out.

Homelands

The octoid has no native homeland, secret underwater city, or wild origin. It comes from an abandoned subterranean lab, alchemical workshop, or flooded ruin beneath a major city where its creators once worked.

When an octoid builds a home on land, it keeps the space damp, filling it with water channels, tanks, and plumbing apparatuses.

Great Purpose

An octoid rarely adventures for gold or surface fame. Having escaped captivity, it is driven by a desire for complete personal freedom, learning new subjects, or tracking down the mages and scientists who experimented on it.

Octoid Names

An octoid usually picks a short, functional name, a scientific term it overheard in the lab, or a name based on mechanical parts.

Octoid names: Kraklet, Inkwell, Barnaby, Trench, Ous, Varian, Helix, Nautilus, Splice, Cuttle, Gauge, Valve, Rivet, Patch.

Cephalite Traits

Ability Score Increase Your Intelligence score increases by 2, and your Constitution score increases by 1.

Ability Score

Extensive laboratory experimentation and artificial cognitive stimulation drastically accelerated your mental development. while your flexible, bone-free physiology gives you exceptional agility and fine motor control inside and outside of your chassis.

Age

Forced arcane growth allows an octoid to reach full intellectual independence within months of hatching. Supported by the environmental control systems of its suit, it can sustain a lifetime comparable to a human's.

Alignment

Raised under strictly controlled observation rather than a social culture, octoids view the world through a lens of systematic logic, strict cause-and-effect, and pragmatic self-preservation.

Size

Your true body is a tiny, soft-bodied mimic octopus. When piloted inside your heavy brass-and-steel chassis, your mechanical frame gives you the footprint and physical presence of a Medium humanoid.

Speed

Unsuited on land, your boneless tentacles can only drag your body across dry ground at a crawl. In water, your natural siphon propulsion gives you swift movement, while your clockwork suit's legs provide standard land speed.

Languages

You learned Common by listening to your captors and scientists communicate around your tank, while Deep Speech stems from the primordial aquatic dialects engineered into your neural structure.

Amphibious

Alchemical modifications to your gills allow you to process oxygen directly from ambient damp air as well as water, keeping you alive even if your head-bowl leaks or drains.

State Shift

Your clockwork suit is a modular vessel designed with a quick-release neck collar. You can unlatch your head-bowl to slip out of the suit for covert recon or tight escapes, though doing so strips away the suit's mechanical limbs, weapons, and structural armor.

Glass Sphere Protection

Your primary head unit is encased in a thick, reinforced glass dome designed to withstand high pressure and impacts, shielding your soft body from incoming projectles and magical blast waves.

Defenseless Terrestrial

Without bone structure or hydrostatic pressure to support your weight on dry land, your unencased body collapses under gravity, leaving you sluggish and vulnerable to physical trauma.
