Homebrew Coccophine Species Details

Coccophines are a race of chameleon like people. They seem to like displaying themselves as certain colors (green, blue, or grey), but can change the color of their scales at will, to match the environment. Unless actively controlling it, the color of the scales around their face may change color on their own, depending on the current emotion the Coccophine is experiencing. Coccophines have only three fingers on each hand (and foot), which are arranged much like those of a chameleon, making them exceptional climbers. Their tongues can shoot out of their mouths with blinding speed to ensnare their prey. While originally intended for hunting food, it can also be applied to battle strategy, and their tongue muscles are strong enough to hold their own weight for easier travel in tough terrain. Their saliva is quite sticky, and once a foe is ensnared, it would quite difficult for them to escape. Coccophines can control each of their eyes individually, so it is very difficult to sneak up on one.

Coccophine Traits

Coccophines have a variety of traits that set them apart from other humanoids.

Projectile Tongue

Coccophines can shoot out their tongues up to 25 ft away from them. If the target is a creature, then the creature must succeed on a DC 15 Dex saving throw, on a successful save the creature dodges out of the way, on a failed save the creature is ensnared for 1d4 turns. On it's turn it can use it's action to roll a DC 18 Str check. On a success the creature is free, on a fail it continues to be stuck. Once you've caught a creature, you can use your bonus action to reel in the creature if the creature is unwilling, you must succeed on a strength contest against the creature in order to do so. If the target is an object, than you may use a bonus action to reel it in, if it weighs your Str Modifier x10. If the object is wielded by another creature, who doesn't want to let go, you must succeed on a Str contest against the creature. On a tie, the creature is reeled in with the object. If you use these ability with the intent to traverse difficult terrain you must roll a DC 10 Str check in order to do so. You may bring with you another creature of your size or smaller but it with be changed to a DC 15 Str check if you wish to do so. You may choose to have a poisonous barb at the tip of your tongue , but if you do so, the strength of your sticky saliva will decrease (your DM will decide how much). If a target is hit with a poisonous barb, they must succeed on a DC 10 Con saving throw. On a failed save, target receives 3d4 poison damage, on a success target receives half as much damage. The Projectile Tongue ability can only be used five times per short or long rest.

Surround Sight

Coccophines can control each of their eyes individually. They can swivel their eyes to look in any direction, even directly behind them, giving them advantage on any Wisdom (perception) checks that rely on sight.

Adept Climber

Coccophines can use all four limbs to climb difficult terrain, giving them advantage on Dex checks that involve climbing. They may choose to use two of their limbs to carry a large object, or a creature of their size or smaller. If they choose to do so they no longer benefit from the advantage.
