Homebrew Cueyatl Species Details

Deep in the coastal jungles, the frog-like cueyatl defend their tribal home from demonic incursion and the monstrous megafauna of the isle of Tlalhuactli.

Centuries ago, the Cueyatl shared space in the jungle with the Olman people- a polytheistic race of humans who erected massive temples, pyramids, and shrines in the jungle to the north. In a major cataclysm, the Olmans and their gods were wiped from the face of the jungle and the Cueyatl took that as a cautionary tale. They now worship no gods, but the natural forces of the earth itself.

The Cueyatl of the tribe of Cienaga make their home at the base of the Tepeyollotl, a squat clay mountain. They have made their home at the exact point where the mountain meets the jungle floor and a mysterious river, the Atoyatl, flows from the Calacoayan- a sacred concavity in the mountain. Not even the Cueyatl could tell you how the Atoyatl can flow so readily from the solid earth.

Cueyatl also raise small spiny river dogs known as Ahuitzotl. These domesticated beasts love playing in rivers and swampland and are useful hunting animals- especially with the extra hand that grows from their tails.

Cueyatl names are all based on frog sounds! Examples: Groak, Roark, Crua-Crua, Riik, Krikikik, Tococo, Coqui
