Homebrew Aaverog Species Details

"I have never imagined such beauty existed,”  Gomolran said softly. The day’s march had been difficult, but the reward at the end was beyond their dreams. The companions stood on a high cliff over the fabled city of Nythaala.

Four slender spires rose from the city’s corners like glistening spindles, their brilliant light grey stone marbled with shining crystal. Graceful arches, swooping from spire to spire, soared through the air. Crafted by ancient fey beings, they were strong enough to hold the weight of an army, yet they appeared so delicate that a bird lighting on them might overthrow the balance. These glistening arches were the city’s only boundaries; there was no wall around Nythaala. The aaverosian city opened its arms lovingly to the wilderness.

Aaverogs are a magical people of otherworldly grace, living in the feywild. They live in places of ethereal beauty, in the midst of ancient forests or in crystalline spires glittering with faerie light, where soft music drifts through the air and gentle fragrances waft on the breeze. Aaverogs love nature and magic, art and artistry, music and poetry, and the good things of the world.

Slender and Graceful

With their unearthly grace and fine features, aaverogs appear hauntingly beautiful to humans and members of many other races. They are taller than humans on average, ranging from well over 6 feet tall to over 7 feet. They are more slender than humans, weighing only 100 to 145 pounds. Males and females are about the same height, and males are only marginally heavier than females.

Aaverogs’ coloration encompasses the normal human range and also includes skin in shades of copper, bronze, gold, and almost bluish-white, hair of white, multi-colored or blue, and eyes like pools of crystalline jewels or silver. Aaverogs have no facial and little body hair. They favor elegant clothing in bright colors, and they enjoy simple yet lovely jewelry.

Aaverogs are tall, slender, elven-looking faeries. The females are winged, whilst the males are not. Both genders have tails reminiscent of a lion's tail. Males, for the lack of wings, can be born with two tails. On occasion, males can be born with wings, however, they are too weak for flight.

Appearance wise, females have 3 pairs of wings, completing a set, that is capable of reflecting a rainbow of colors.

Unlike standard elves, Aaverogs have two pairs of ears. A standard elven pair, then a much smaller pair in front of that, rather than pointed upwards and back, are pointed downward and out.

A Timeless Perspective

Aaverogs can live well over 700 years, giving them a broad perspective on events that might trouble the shorter-lived races more deeply. They are more often amused than excited, and more likely to be curious than greedy. They tend to remain aloof and unfazed by petty happenstance. When pursuing a goal, however, whether adventuring on a mission or learning a new skill or art, aaverogs can be focused and relentless. They are slow to make friends and enemies, and even slower to forget them. They reply to petty insults with disdain and to serious insults with vengeance.

Like the branches of a young tree, aaverogs are flexible in the face of danger. They trust in diplomacy and compromise to resolve differences before they escalate to violence. They have been known to protect from intrusions into their woodland homes however, confident that they can simply block the invaders out and revealing a stern martial side, demonstrating skill with strategy, bow, and the arcane upon doing so.

Hidden Realms

Most aaverogs dwell in small forest villages hidden among the trees in the feywild. Aaverogs hunt game, gather food, and grow vegetables, and their skill and magic allow them to support themselves without the need for clearing and plowing land. They are talented artisans, crafting finely worked clothes and art objects. Their contact with outsiders is usually limited, though a few aaverog make a good living by trading crafted items for metals (which they have no interest in mining).

Aaverogs are rarely encountered outside their own lands, but are commonly traveling minstrels, artists, or sages when they are.

Exploration and Adventure

Aaverogs take up adventuring out of wanderlust. Since they are so long-lived, they can enjoy centuries of exploration and discovery. They dislike the pace of human society, which is regimented from day to day but constantly changing over decades, so they find careers that let them travel freely and set their own pace. Aaverogs also enjoy exercising their intellectual or physical prowess, as well as gaining greater magical power, and adventuring allows them to do so.

Age-based variants

Age and time differences among the aaverog resulted in three main subraces: Young, old, and ancients.

Young aaverogs (below the age of 100) are more active than the old and ancient aaverogs. Young aaverogs, due to being awake during the night, tend to do tasks and night watches that the old and ancients can't. Due to being night owls, young aaverogs have an increased darkvision up to 90 feet.

Old aaverogs are stronger and tougher. They tend to be awake more during the evening and early morning. Old aaverogs take care to do the in between tasks left from the young and ancient aaverogs.

Ancient aaverogs are wiser and more durable. Ancients tend to be the ones roaming around during the day. Ancient female aaverogs have an increased flight speed of 30 feet.

Although aaverogs have age-based variants, various aged aaverogs can still be seen at any time and work together as one, no matter the differences in schedules.

Aaverog Traits

Your aaverog character has a variety of natural abilities, the result of thousands of years of fae refinement.

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity score increases by 2, and your strength score increases by 1.

Age

Although aaverogs reach physical maturity at about the same age as humans, the aaverosian understanding of adulthood goes beyond physical growth to encompass worldly experience. An aaverog typically claims adulthood around the age of 100 and claim to be ancient around the age of 300, they can live to be 750 years old.

Alignment

Aaverogs love freedom, variety, and self-expression, so they lean strongly toward the gentler aspects of chaos. They value and protect others’ freedom as well as their own, and they are more often good than not.

Size

Aaverogs range from 6 to over 7 feet tall and have slender builds. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision

Accustomed to twilit forests and the night sky, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Keen Senses

You have proficiency in the Perception skill.

Fey Ancestry

You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.

Trance

Aaverog don’t need to sleep. Instead, they meditate deeply, remaining semiconscious, for 4 hours a day. (The Common word for such meditation is “trance.”) While meditating, you can dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive through years of practice. After resting in this way, you gain the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep. Aaverog can sleep if they choose, however.

Sleeping is more common amongst the ancients.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Sylvan. Sylvan is fluid, with subtle intonations and intricate grammar. Sylvan literature is rich and varied, and their songs and poems are famous among other races.

Flight - Female

Aaverog flight - 15 foot flying speed.

Ancient Aaverog flight - 30 foot flying speed

Flight duration is calculated by your Constitution mod + 1 (calculated in hours). Example: A con mod of 3 + 1 would equal 4 hours of flight before needing to rest for a few.

Bonus action to begin flight.

Bonus action to end flight.

In combat, Aaverog females require waiting two rounds before taking flight again.
