Homebrew Bugbear (Isatis Tinctoria) Species Details

Across the mountainous region of Motya, bugbears establish powerful families and tribes to survive the miserable, frigid environment of their homelands.  Strict, but loyal and hardy, bugbears see no use in dealing with anything beyond their lands, seeing it as their ancestral duty to protect the mountains with all their might from invading forces.

Protected by a heavy coat of shaggy, dark brown fur, and displaying massive jaws, powerful muscles and legs as thick as pillars, bugbears are built for survival in the harsh and near-barren lands that they call home.  Their claws, long and curved like the blade of a sickle, are sharp enough to dig deep into stone, letting bugbears latch onto and climb along cavern walls and mountainsides.  This aids them in ambushes when hunting and fending off outsiders.

Bugbear (Isatis Tinctoria) Traits

Survival in the desolate Motya mountains is difficult, but not impossible. The continuation of the bugbear lineage attests to this. As a bugbear, you have the following attributes.

Ability Score Increase

Your Strength and Constitution scores increase by 2, and your Dexterity score increases by 1.

Age

Bugbears mature once they reach 5 years of age.  The harsh conditions claim most bugbear by the age of 40 years, although there have been sightings of nearly 50-year-old bugbears.

Alignment

Enduring the harsh conditions of the Moty Mountains has forced the bugbears to remain self-sufficient and staunchly loyal to their tribe, willing to do whatever it takes for survival.  Most bugbears are, therefore, of chaotic alignments.

Size

Bugbears are between 9 and 10 feet tall and weigh between 1,500 and 1,650  pounds. Your size is Large.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.  You also have a swimming speed of 25 feet and a climbing speed of 30 feet.

Claws

Your long claws can be used to make a claw attack for 1d10 slashing damage + your Strength modifier.

Cold Protection

Your thick fat and heavy coat of fur gives you resistance to cold damage and advantage on Constitution saving throws when in extreme cold.

Brute

A melee weapon deals one extra die of its damage when the bugbear hits with it (included in the attack).

Darkvision

You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Menacing

You have proficiency in Intimidation checks.

Sneaky
