Homebrew Capara Species Details
It's not uncommon for waterfalls in Mezona to be well-lit at their base, hearing sounds of metal clanging and cheers from others as a new invention takes shape. The Capara reside in the caves behind waterfalls due to their close proximity to the heat beneath the surface, creating forges for heroes who dare to come close and share their inventions with others. After all, Capara take delight in invention, exploration, investigation, and creation.
Stoic Expression
Capara typically are solid creatures, built with a small, but thick frame. Capara average slightly over 3 feet tall and weigh 60 to 175 pounds, with males tending to be heavier due to their more muscular build. Their fur typically appears coarse, but is usually soft to allow water to wick away from their body while awimming. Their faces are unique, with their nostrils towards the top of their head, giving them the appearance of looking stoic or unimpressed about most things.
Capara are actually impressed by few things in this world. The way to gain honor and respect in their society is through invention and knowledge of metallurgy. The few times people have caught Capara smiling has been in the forge, crafting their latest work.
A Life Devoted to the Forge
Capara society revolves around the forge, learning how to make better and more resilient inventions. While most Capara are skilled in making weapons, inventions on how to improve their lives are much more valuable to them. Many inventions are testaments to their family's skills, earning them Honor and prestige among their kind.
Every year, Capara families will travel into the major cities to hold demonstrations of their latest creations. Capara elders will normally judge those inventions which are three most useful to their society, but will also build up the settlement's supplies by selling the most useful inventions from the previous year.
With this being said, Capara culture revolves around utilitarianism. Those of the highest esteem are often inventors and engineers, followed by blacksmiths and forgers, with Jewelers at the very bottom. Families can only grow their esteem in society during the yearly trek into the city.
Capara young are often trained in the family based on their family's status though apprenticeship that lasts for the first three years of their life. Submitting to the inventor's faire is viewed as a passage into adulthood among their society, showing their family's legacy as well as their ability to support the community.
A Dual Lifestyle
The Capara are at home when they are in their caves, near the forges that they do their work in. A fulfilling day for the Capara is a productive one as many may have up to 10 projects they are working on in a single day. Many of the caverns they live in are located behind waterfalls to allow for a quick access to fresh water for tempering processes while also being protected from many of their predators. With their inventive nature, they have developed systems of keeping light down in their caverns during the daytime and will be programmed to darken at night, not breaking their rhythm when they do venture outside the caves. Over time, their darkvision has diminished due to their inventiveness and their need to exist both in and outside the caves.
While the caves provides protection, it does not provide everything for the Capara. Many spouses venture out with their children to gather food for the day near the riverbeds and waterfalls they're from. They have developed excellent hiding skills from larger carnivorous species, such as caimans, but they are not immune to danger. Most families will stick together in foraging parties for food and will typically retreat to safety or huddle around the children should danger arise. With their life around the water, they have also adapted to become excellent swimmers and often have good relations with the Ottin settlements nearby.
