Homebrew Awakened Species Details

Gift of Nature

Once the secret of life was unlocked the knowledge of which
to perform this ritual is not easy to attain for young and
inexperienced druid or ovate. As a druid and bard progress in
their studies and understanding of the natural world they
begin to understand nature in all its forms, including how to
give life. Archdruids and bards can spend weeks or months
searching to seek out the perfect tree for which to impart this
ritual. The ritual is long and complicated and does have a
physical toll for those that perform it. When gifted - the
Awakened tree will transform but is still similar to their
shape before given sentience and intelligence. The Awakened
gain limbs with which they can walk, and move their arms
such as a humanoid. Their numbers are few because the
ritual is long and arduous and finding the correct gemstone
for which to work is time consuming and expensive.

Gemstones

The gemstone used during the ritual is as crucial to
traits of the Awakened as the genes passed down
to a child by parents of other races. As the druids
and bards experimented with various gemstones,
they found that certain types of gems produced
vastly different Awakened traits and temperaments.

Unnatural Existence

Awakened are more comfortable in nature and tend to shy
away from civilization if it can be avoided. They prefer to stay
in their groves or sanctuaries and sometimes with their
creator. Those that are brave enough to venture into a town
or city may find that they are unable to be accepted, denied
access, or flat out attacked as many monstrous races do.

Commune With Nature

After being given the Gift of Nature - Awakened still possess
the ability to commune with nature in a limited fashion. Their
primal instincts allow them to understand and converse in
the rudimentary language that plants have. Also Awakened
possess the ability to still speak with beasts as they had
before.

Woodland Home

Their existence starts away from civilization and because of
this they would rather tend to their natural groves and homes
protecting plant life and wild life alike. The relatively small
number of Awakened live together for their existence and
survival. Their long life grants them the ability that lesser
races have in understanding their balance and existence in
nature. Their small communal living is in groves of similar
trees where they can blend in away from the eyes of
civilization. They nurture these trees that one day they may
be able to also grant them the Gift of Nature.

Memory and Knowledge

Their sentience and intelligence are solely because
of druids and bards that found the secret of life
itself. But when given the Gift of Nature does not
mean that they have no memory or knowledge
from before, those memories are locked away in
the inner rings of the tree core. As a tree they were
able to commune with other wild life and plant life
through their roots and limbs.

Natural Defenses
Awakened scorn the use of armor that other races use
because they find them unable to fit properly and ungraceful
in their movement and their bark provides them ample
defense in place of armor. Also each Awakened have the
ability to camouflage themselves by blending in with their
surroundings by moving slowly or remaining still while
mimicking a non-sentient tree.

Natural Weapons

Awakened try and utilize more natural weapons made with
such items as wood, bone, chitin, scale, or stone. Within a
small group of Awakened settlements metal is seen as an
aberration and goes against the natural order of the world.

reflective of the type of tree that was given the Gift of Nature.

Awakened Traits

Experiments with Gemstones "I have awoken countless trees instilling them with the Gift of Nature and creating protectors of plant and wild life alike. Some gemstones have dire consequences giving undesirable traits and some Awakened go their separate way and exile themselves from the rest of Awakened conclaves. They hope that one day they can rejoin their conclaves. At times I wonder if these experiments should continue - but we must know more." -Archdruid Tenoch
