Homebrew Civil Goblin Species Details
Goblins are a race of small and numerous goblinoids common throughout Toril, often living in underground caverns near the surface known as lairs. The race is often, though not always, dominated by other goblinoids, most commonly hobgoblins. Goblins may have, in fact, been initially created by this related race to serve as scouts and infiltrators. These small-sized creatures while not strong on their own make up for their weaknesses with numbers.
The survival and continuation of their species is the goal of most goblins lives; a place to settle with plenty of resources and goods to steal, far from marauding monsters and clashing armies; where a goblin can relax in a dark quite cave, with a fine mug of grog. However, some goblins live with common folk their days normally dealing with the racism of other common people. Most civilized goblins go onto being diplomats, shopkeepers, and artisans of fine arts. others form nomadic bands that travel constantly, lured by the promise of coins and other magic items normally nomadic goblins are outcasts who were shun from their clan. Even these rough outcasts need basic necessity's and its much harder for them to get food, water, and comfort simply because of assumptions against goblins.
Small and Practical
The diminutive goblins survive in a world full of larger creatures by avoiding notice or, barring that, fleeing for their lives. Standing about 3 feet tall, they appear relatively harmless and so have managed to survive for centuries in the shadow of empires and on the edges of wars more as a nuisance. They are normally pretty stocky, weighing between 45 and 60 pounds.
Goblins skin ranges from tan to green with a rusty cast, and their hair is usually black or grey and strait. They have brown or hazel eyes. Goblin men often sport pony tails, but beards are very rare among them and mustaches even more so. They like to wear simple, crude, and practical armor, favoring simple leathers.
Survival Of The Fittest
Goblins are a cruel and simple people, if your weak your good for nothing to the clan and are normally shun out, however if your strong you rise the ranks within the goblin society. Its a harsh world for goblins so they have learned to take care of themselves; or be killed.
Goblins are not easily moved to pity and begging and see it as weak or disgraceful. They are greedy, self centered, however more civilized goblins are more compassionate and caring for their fellow common folk.
Socially Awkward
Goblins are not very adept at fitting into a community of humans, dwarves, or elves, being seen as trouble or evil and will normally take offence from this treatment. However with friendship and trust goblins can be some of the most loyal friends you can ever have.
Goblins will work readily with others, however, will despise anyone who is racist to them, this is why they are loyal to their friends. whether goblins or otherwise. They can display remarkable ferocity when their favored friends or communities are threatened.
Tribal Background
Most goblins live in small, rouged tribes normally run by powerful goblinoids or powerful mortals. They normally build into caves on the surface close to a town or main road where slaves, goods, and food can easily be taken. They typically don’t recognize any sort of goblin nobility or royalty, instead looking to tribal elders to lead them. Families are rough and tough teaching their children from early ages to steal, take, and pillage.
Many goblins that live among other races, struggle with this tribal instinct to steal and take, however though hard work and loyalty goblins eventually learn the benefits of common life. Some goblins travel as a way of life, mainly because of this tribal instinct and their fear of hurting the ones they care for.
Exploring Opportunities
Goblins usually set out on the adventurer’s path because they were shunned from their community's, living on the road looking to become civilized, or on a quest in search of themselves. For them, adventuring is less a career than an opportunity or sometimes a necessity for their survival.
