Homebrew Demon Host (v. 3.0) Species Details
Demons don’t always die: Whenever a demon grows powerful enough, conflict with Celestials is sure to follow. When the demon is inevitably defeated, the Celestials often can’t kill it completely, instead weakening the demon and destroying their physical form. In this incorporeal form they wander, trying to find a host that they can use to regain their power. At some point in your life, one of these demons sought refuge inside of you. Using you as a host, it absorbs your life energy to rebuild itself, and attempts to guide you to help it do so, tempting you with power and knowledge. You may embrace this, allowing the demon to guide you, believing that even after the demon leaves you will retain this power you gain, or you may be disgusted by the demon’s promises, and see that it will eventually lead to your inevitable demise.
Haunted by evil: You have a demon inside of you, constantly attempting to gain control of your body, and tempting you into doing what it wants you to. You may have given into it’s demands, becoming evil and attempting to help it regain it’s power, or you may be seeking aid to help remove it from yourself. Either way, the demon will do anything it can to keep you alive, as in it’s current state it is heavily weakened, and can not survive outside of it’s host.
Demon Host (v. 3.0) Traits
You may seem like a human from the outside, but on the inside you have a demon that grants you the following traitsDemonic Consultant
Three times per long rest you can consult your demon for help. When you make a wisdom check you may gain advantage on that roll. You may use this ability 2 times per long rest, and regain 1 charge when you take a short rest
Starting at level 10 your demon sees no need to help you with your whims. You lose use of this ability
Give up control
Starting at lv. 3, once per long rest you can give up control of your body to your demon. When you do this, your eyes seep out a dark gas, and you become enveloped in darkness, gaining the following traits for 1 turn (The amount of turns you can remain in this state for increases by 1 turn at lv. 4, lv. 9, lv. 13, and lv. 18):
- In this state you gain advantage on checks to intimidate
- Once per round you can add half of your level (rounded up) to any roll you make. If this bonus is applied to a damage roll the added damage is Necrotic
- You gain resistance to Necrotic damage, and weakness to Radiant damage.
After your turns are over, or if you become unconscious, you revert back to normal and suffer from exhaustion lv. 1 until you take a long rest.
Starting at lv. 5, your demon can prevent you from dying. Whenever you would die, if you haven't used lose control since your last long rest, it automatically activates, granting you temporary hit points equal to half of your maximum hit points, and ending one turn earlier than normal. When you revert from this state you lose all temporary hit points and become unconscious but stable if you have no hit points, lose 1 maximum hit point permanently (this ability can not prevent dying due to having 0 max hit points) and suffer from exhaustion 3 instead of exhaustion 1. While exhausted this way you can not use demonic consultation and lose the effects of defender of the mind.
Starting at lv. 7, your demon's power is becoming too much for your body to handle. Whenever you lose control you suffer from 1 more level of exhaustion.
Starting at lv. 13, your demon can prevent you from dying once per long rest even if you have used lose control since your last long rest. (You only suffer from exhaustion from this instance), but you permanently lose 2 maximum hit points from using lose control normally, and 5 for preventing death.
Starting at lv. 15, every 5 minutes, you must make a wisdom saving throw with a DC of 10. If you fail, you Lose Control for a minute. The first time this happens the effects of exhaustion occur, but not on later instances. The times you lose control this way do not take charges to occur.
Becoming free...
When your demon leaves your body, two things will happen:
- When your demon leaves your body, most likely someone will have to fight it (It will automatically flee your body if something attempts to destroy it while it is still inside of you). When it becomes free, if you are at level 3 or higher, it will manifest as a demon with a CR equal to your level of the DM/GM's choice (If there is not a demon with a CR equal to your Lv, then choose one with the next highest CR)
- After your demon leaves your body, you become a human or human variant called Released from Evil with the following changes:
- Knowledge of the Occult: Your contact with evil has taught you much about it, and allows you to analyse and use dark rituals and forces with greater ease than most. You gain advantage when making investigation, history, and arcana checks relating to dark powers and rituals (DM’s discretion)
- Honed Mind: Your experience with being possessed has taught you how to protect your mind from intrusion. You gain resistance to psychic damage
Defender of the Mind
You gain resistance to Psychic Damage
Starting at lv. 10 the demon no longer cares about protecting your mind. You lose the effects of this ability
Ability Score Increase
+1 to any 2 different ability scores of your choice
Age
Humans normally reach adulthood in their late teens and live less than a century, however the way you were sealed away means that you have been suspended in time for several centuries at least, potentially millennium.
Alignment
A Demon Prison tends toward the extremes, either giving in to the Demon's demands, or fighting back as they search for the celestials that can destroy it.
Size
Humans vary widely in height and build, from barely 5 feet to well over 6 feet tall. Regardless of your position in that range, your size is Medium.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common and Abyssal. As you are a human at heart, you may still know bits of other languages that you incorporate into your speech, but most of your time asleep was spent talking to your demon in abyssal
