Homebrew Dracoling Species Details

Dracolings are a lot less entertaining when they are bending a vicious mockery your way.

Dracolings are not as stern or serious as bathamutai, where their larger cousins have the maturity and serious outlook of gold or silver dragons, dracolings in contrast, are more akin to the fun loving copper, brass and bronze dragons. They are carefree and fun loving.

Dracolings  enjoy artistic pursuits such as art and performance and make natural bards and lore keepers. Although individually they are carefree and shy away from direct conflict, dracolings are dangerous if cornered, vicious when defending their eggs, and notorious for their expertise in the arcane arts.

BATHMUTAI: GOD OF DRACOLINGS

The god of dracolings and their creator is Bathamutai. the god of justice and patron leader of good dragonkind. He taught the first kobolds how to wield magic and many of their kind gravitate towards classes that wield divine and arcane magic, but dracolings are known as fantastic bards.  Much as enmity between Bathmutai and Tiamundra exists so too does the enmity between kobolds and dracolings, the two miniature races are distantly related and kobolds are jealous of the favour Bathmutai showed to the first dracolings, kobolds also blame dracolings for the casting down of their own god Kurtulmak, whom was punished for allowing some of the kobolds to become the children of her arch nemesis.

Expert Flyers

Dracolings are naturally skilled at flyers. They are as swift in the air as they are on the ground. Dracolings who settle in one place often build aeries in high lofty places. Kobolds take advantage of their flying ability dive bombing enemies with spells and alchemical weapons before flying by and out of range of melee combat.

Groomed for success

Dracolings have a varied appearance their scales while tending to be a shade more vibrant can be any of the usual chromatic or metallic colours of dragon kind and on a rare occasion a deep violet or crimson. They have wings and a long thin tail to balance there agile frames. They have catlike reflexes and are always well groomed which adds and aids their charismatic demeanour. They stand around 2-3 foot tall.

Keen Alchemists and Brewers

Dracolings are adept at identifying potions and alchemical ingredients, and keenly ply the craft of alchemy and potion making. They also have a talent for brewing tasty beverages and a mean broth as well, most commonly favoured among fans is the secret dracoling recipe of Dragon ale.

Arcane Magic Users

Unlike some other humanoids, dracolings don’t fear or shun arcane magic, indeed they are drawn to it. They see magic as part of their connection to dragons, and are proud to be blessed with the ability to wield such power. Young dracolings flock to adventurer's guilds to be trained in the arcane arts and the tower of arcanys takes in many more dracolings than bathmutai in the rebuilt city of Bathdracithyr, the capital city of the Dragonfaeyr Empire. Wizardry is more the path of the bathmutai, but dracoling wizards while rare are not unheard of, dragon heritage sorcerers are common, warlocks are rare as dracolings natural flare for the arcane seldom needs such a pact to unlock arcane power. By far, dracolings have a talent for entertainment and make legendary bards have a penchant for mixing and blend their arcane talents with their natural talent to perform.

It should also be mentioned that some dracolings choose instead to follow the path of divine magic falling into the clergy of not only Bathdieran but also Avyndra and Kaelas, more often as clerics but the odd paladin has been heard off.

Relations and Adventure

Dracolings tend to flutter about bathamutai like annoying little siblings, partly because they like to get a rise out of them for fun, they are friendly and find forming relations with most races a breeze and enjoy the challenge of thawing a grizzled old dwarf heart or two. However they seem to have strained relations with “braxa” gnomes, as the gnomes and their technology are often the target of their practical jokes and snide comments. Dracolings with performance talent find themself welcome in any inn all expenses paid for and a pot of gold for their trouble.

Dracolings love adventure, they love experiencing it, writing it down and then exaggerating it to epic proportions for the entertainment of all who would here their tales, they love storytelling and yet also take the time to log the real events for historical prosperity, a large majority of them choose to be bards, draconic sorcerers and favoured souls of Bathdieran, though a few try their hands at other professions normally for the sheer experience of it all. Few have the right stuff to make it as a paladin, knight or monk as they tend never to be disciplined enough for these exacting roles.

Grow Fast, Die Early

Dracolings grow and mature much more swiftly than members of other humanoid races. At 10 years old a dracoling is considered an adult. Most succumb to violence, accidents, or misadventure by age 20, but a kobold can live for up to 520 years — a longevity they attribute to being distantly related to dragons. A female can lay up to six eggs per year, and an egg matures for two to three months before it hatches.

Dracolings believe that if they die in service to their community, Bathdeiran immediately sends each of them back to life as the next egg laid in the hatchery. If a particularly bad or evil dracoling dies, it is believed he is sent to a kobold hatchery instead, this is such a terrifying though that seldom does a dracoling choose a life of evil.

Food and Cannibalism

Much like their kobold cousins are actually omnivores, and can eat just about anything, including meat, fruit, tree bark, bone, leather, and eggshells (a newly hatched dracoling’s first meal is usually its own shell). A hungry dracoling leaves nothing behind from a kill, eating everything that’s edible and using the rest to make tools or adornments.

Also like Kobolds, dracolings shed teeth as they wear out and grow new ones their entire lives. Many wear their own shed teeth as jewelry, with more teeth indicating an older — and wiser — dracolings. Unlike Kobold's, dracolings would never perform such an unscrupulous act to wear teeth stolen or harvested from others in an attempt to make them seem older and more respectable, to dracolings its reprehensible.

A dracoling would never deign to eat the flesh of intelligent creatures and consider such an act an unspeakable act, just another reason dracolings hate goblins and kobolds.

Hatred

Dracolings hate their ancestral cousins because it reminds them of what they once were and also because those kobolds chose to turn their back on the greatest divine gift every bestowed, that being said they are usually to busy having a great time to spend to much energy on this enmity until they come face to face. The harbour a strong dislike for goblinoid races, they are considered the biggest party poopers and that irks most dracolings.

Environment

Dracolings are warm blooded much like their bathmutai cousins and have no problems coexisting in communities within any climate.

Dracolings live in small communities throughout the outlands, most of which are in loft areas. With the completed reconstruction of Bathdracithyr, many of their kind are emigrating to this new city, feeling a sense of excitement and enthusiasm which startles the bathmutai and puts a smile on the other races faces.

Dracolings love to roam from town to town whether its finding adventure or performing at the local tavern.

URDS: WINGED KOBOLDS

Winged kobolds, known as urds, hatch seemingly at random from kobold eggs, even in a tribe that has no adult urds. Although being able to fly is an incredible gift, and it would be expected for kobolds to interpret the wings as a blessing from Tiamundra, ordinary kobolds resent urds and don’t get along with them. Fragments of kobold legends speak of Kuraulyek, a winged godling servant of Kurtulmak, who betrayed his master in some way. Kobolds see urds as Kuraulyek’s favorites, and they project their resentment of this traitor onto their winged kin.

Dracolings on the other hand try and convert such creatures to the cause of good, demonstrating the evils of their kin and the resentment they suffer as a reason to turn.

The urds have a confused middle child attitude to it all and this can lead to some chaotic outcomes.
