Homebrew Destrier Centaur Species Details
The Destrier are a subspecies of Centaur that have devoloped great size and strength over the centuries. The Destrier are the ancestors of centaur tribes who valued physical strength and skill over mental or magical ability and as a result they are now far larger and hardier than their brethern. Their culture focuses on physical ability but also on the capacity for leadership and honor. A Destrier will keep their word even until death, and a broken vow is cause for their exile from the tribes from which they cannot return, upon pain of death.
Destrier Centaur Traits

+2 Strength, +1 Constitution
Age
Destrier Centaurs reach maturity at 15 years of age. Their lifespans vary because of the harsh conditions and martial nature of their culture, but they can live to a known age of 200.
Size
The average Destrier Centaur is between six to seven feet tall at the horses shoulder and between 8 to ten feet at the human head. They have been known to weigh between 1300 and 1900 pounds. Your size is Large. However, due to the position of your Torso you do not gain natural bonus reach. You may serve as a mount for a single creature one size below yours or smaller, and when you do so you always act independently of your rider.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 40ft.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common.
Bonus Proficiencies
As a Destrier Centaur you have a natural ability to sway others to your cause through persuasion or intimidation and gain proficiency in these skills.
Hooves
Your hooves are natural melee weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal bludgeoning damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
Heavy Charge
If you move at least 30 feet straight toward a target and then hit it with an attack on the same turn, you deadl double weapon damage. The target must make a strength save with DC 8+your proficiency+your strength modifier or be knocked prone. This ability may only be used with a spear, pike, halberd, trident or lance. You can use this ability once per long rest.
Equine Limitations
While there are surely advantages to being a hybrid, there are a number of ways in which the horse half of a centaur is a detriment to the humanoid half.
- As you lack the lower body of a humanoid, you are unable to wear humanoid armor below the belt (ex: leggings, greaves, or boots) unless such armor can be sufficiently altered for you.
- Due to the larger size of your lower half, any fall damage taken is doubled.
- Unless your hooves are in some way obscured, you have disadvantage on Stealth checks when walking on hard surfaces, such as stone, brick, or glass.
- Due to your duel nature and size your armor costs four times as much in order to be altered to include barding and to fit your unique shape. Such armor also also weighs twice as much.
- Any climb that requires hands and feet is especially difficult for you because of your equine legs. When you make such a climb, each foot of movement costs you 4 extra feet, instead of the normal 1 extra foot.
