Homebrew Angelican Experiment Species Details

It's really a pity that we have all those held down there, yet no use for them. We don't need their hard labor, due to our automatons. Shame, what a shame. Maybe they might help us out in a different way...

- Niccolo Angelico, Grand Khan of Angelico City

Angelican Experiments are humanoids that are subdued to torturous transformations at the hands of powerful wizards. These creatures have the appearance of their base race; however, they gain extraordinary powers. Some can turn into other creatures, whilst others are merely able to summon the strengths of the monsters inside them.

Previous Life

Your experiment will have had a previous life, and whether they remember this or not is up to you. Most of these experiments are human, however some of the Duergar and Drow of the Undercity are captured and forced into the torturous treatment of these experiments. Experiments are normally tormented after they have their minds wiped.

Some have brief flashbacks when they encounter people or places from their previous lives. These can cause great emotions and may trigger abilities that some experiments may not have known they had. These mostly show in their instincts, as their emotions turn primal, and the savage beasts now inside them burst out.

Not So Plain Sight

Angelican Experiments have one goal. Survive. These beings often take refuge in the forest or mountains, far away from civilizations and other people. Their heritage makes them freakish, and they stand out like a sore thumb. Some can cover up their nature, and blend into civilization, but most don’t take the risk.

Some aren't as lucky. Their experimentation deformed them beyond repair. The only ones that can fix these poor souls are the gods themselves yet earning the favor of these omnipotent beings. Pity given to these people are often paid for by taking the mantle of the god and spreading their will through any means.

Experiment Names

Some have full memory of their previous lives before the experimentation and choose to keep their previous name or make a new one based off their base race. Others underwent such torturous conditions that their memory was erased, and such create new names similar to fey spirits that they often interact with.

Angelican Experiment Traits

Your Angelican Experiment character has the following traits.

Animal Infusion

When choosing your bloodline, you select a base race of human, duergar, or drow, as well as a subrace of bear, eagle, or wolf. Your ability score increases are given from your base race, while the subrace grants you your innate talents and features.

Bear - You grow long claws and gain an innate climbing speed equal to your movement. You gain advantage on Strength saving throws and become proficient in the Athletics and Survival skills.

Eagle You sprout wings and gain an innate flying speed of 10 plus your movement. You gain advantage on Dexterity saving throws and become proficient in the Survival skill.

Wolf - You gain movement speed equal to 1.5 times your movement speed, rounded to the nearest 5. You grow large teeth and can choose to strike with them as an unarmed strike. This attack does 1d6 + STR piercing damage. You become proficient in the Acrobatics and Survival skills.

Primal Spirit

Because of the mixed bloodlines that these experiments produce, you gain a primal spirit based on your sub race. These spirits are tied deeply with your animal bloodline, and you can access some of the most primal instincts of these animals in times of great need. You can only unleash your primal instinct once per long rest.

Bear  Having the primal spirit of a bear inside you, you can unleash your instinct in a Primal Roar. This roar causes any hostile creature, or those unaware of your true nature to make a Wisdom saving throw or be frightened of you for 1 minute. Your facial appearance during the roar becomes that of a full bear’s.

Eagle – Having the primal spirit of an eagle inside you, you can unleash your instinct to track a creature. You get advantage on all survival checks made to track that creature, and if time comes to attack said creature, you get advantage on all attacks made to that creature. These advantages end after 30 seconds of the creature being found, or after eight hours if the creature is not found.

Wolf – Having the primal spirit of a wolf inside you, you can unleash your instinct to Gruesomely Attack one creature. When taking the attack action on a creature, you can perform a whole turn of action twice, however, both actions must be used to attack the creature. The first attack to hit after using this feature automatically critical, however the rest of the attacks then become unable to score a critical.

Previous Life

When choosing your bloodline, you select a base race of human, duergar, or drow, as well as a subrace of bear, eagle, or wolf. Your ability score increases are given from your base race, while the subrace grants you your innate talents and features.

Human - Your ability scores each increase by 1, or you can select 2 ability scores to go up by 2.

Duergar – Constitution goes up by 2, and Strength goes up by 1. You also gain Superior Darkvision, and at 5th level you gain the ability to cast Invisibility once per long rest.

Drow – Dexterity goes up by 2, and Charisma goes up by 1. You also gain Superior Darkvision and learn the Dancing Lights cantrip. At 5th level you learn the Darkness Spell, and can cast it once per long rest.
