Homebrew Arctic Triton Species Details
Pearl colored scales, a prismatic gleam, and eyes of bright icy blue; these are the mystic qualities of an Arctic Triton. These curious sea folk are more often talked about in lore than they are seen. While most keep to the sea, they will emerge from the water for resources or to confront civilizations disrupting their environment. It’s considered good luck to see one while sailing in the morning.
Jewels of the Ocean
As creatures of frigid waters, Arctic Tritons are visually adapted to the life in the icebergs. Their scales are a pearl-like color and reflect a prism of color in light. Most have ice blue corneas, with few having eyes of another pale color. Many Arctic Tritons have hair that is a light, pale version of a color from the rainbow. Less commonly, they have hair of a more ivory color, slightly contrasting with their scales. Otherwise, albinism is actually quite common in Arctic Tritons; approximately 1 in 40 are observed to have it.
Unusual Allies
Arctic Tritons are known to hunt for food alongside orcas. Once they join a pack, they act as strategists and guide the orcas to perform specific maneuvers in order to catch their prey. This could be the isolation of a small group from a herd, a way to chase the prey into a trap, or sometimes launching the Tritons up onto the ice to catch stragglers out of reach from the water. “Prey” is a fairly loose term in this case, and can include humanoids that are hostile to the orcas. This bond extends farther than hunting as the two groups often protect one another.
Tritons may also make friends of penguins, seals, or other arctic animals. Many wizards have penguin familiars, and polar bears make great companions for rangers.
Unparalleled Sculptors
Arctic Tritons are renowned for their legendary sculpting skills; their civilizations attest to this tenfold. They create their homes by carving into icebergs. These upside down cities are one of the most wonderous sights a traveler could possibly ever lay eyes on. Icebergs are carved in intricate design, all pieces of the whole slowly spiraling down to the point at the bottom. Each family creates their own home in their own unique style that unifies with those around it.
