Homebrew Canisapien Species Details
Canisapiens are an animalistic race of canine-like humanoids. They can appear as humans with animal features such as an ears, tail, and patches of fur or similar to bipedal animals with some human traits. The Canisapiens are closely related to canines such as wolves and dogs in appearance. The Canisapiens are considered to be "Demi-humans" (or half-humans) much like half-elves and half-orcs. They are believed to be the descendants of failed druids who couldn't fully complete their wild shape and were then stuck in a half-animal form.
Canisapien Traits
Your half-canine form gives you traits superior to that of a normal person.Canine Awareness
At 1st level you gain the following benefits:
Keen Hearing and Smell. You possess dog-like ears and an enhance sense of smell that helps you with detecting your quarry. You gain proficiency in Wisdom(Perception) checks that rely on hearing or smell. Additionally, you can choose to detect a creature or object with smell if you have smelled that creature or object before.
Darkvision. Your canine eyes allow you to see in dim conditions. You have darkvision out to 30ft seeing dim light as bright light and darkness as dim light, though in darkness you can only discern shades of gray. While in a dark area and you are looking at a light source, your eyes appear to glow.
Bestial Aptitude
On All Fours. As an action you can get down on your hands and feet. After this action, you can move 40 ft instead of 30ft and use a bonus action to pounce onto a creature. The creature must succeed a Strength saving throw with a DC equal to 8 + Strength or Dexterity modifier + proficiency bonus. If the creature fails the saving throw, they are knocked prone and you successfully grapple them, you can then bite that creature. The bite is a melee attack that ignores the target's Dexterity modifier to their AC and the AC granted by a shield dealing (2d6 + Dexterity or Strength modifier) piercing damage. If you are prone, you can use 5ft of your movement to get on all fours which does not cost your action. Standing up from being on all fours requires an action.
Nature Affinity. Your animal nature allows you to thrive in the wilderness. You gain proficiency in Wisdom(Nature) and Wisdom(Survival) checks. You can also speak with canine creatures similar to the Speak with Animals spell.
Animal Satisfaction. You may be humanoid but you are still susceptible to animalistic pleasures. A creature can attempt to pet you by rolling a Wisdom(Animal Handling) check which you contest with a Charisma saving throw (you can choose to fail this throw) with a DC equal to the creature's Animal Handling roll. Upon a failed save, you become charmed and cannot take any actions for as long as the creature uses their turns to pet you, you are hit with a damaging or otherwise negative effect, or the creature petting you takes damage.
As a reaction, you can choose to try and dodge it by rolling a Dexterity(acrobatics) check. The DC for this check is 1d20 + the creature's Dexterity modifier.
