Homebrew Dæmon Fæ Species Details
Upon meeting a Dæmon Fæ for the first time, I was in awe of her beauty. Pale, but not sickly, with high cheekbones, these wonderfully large black eyes and the darkest locks framing her face and wrapping around the base of two horns rising high above her head. She took my hand in between two of her own and in spite of the surprising gentleness I feared she was going to break it.
"Amélie," she told me, voice lulling me into a sense of peace, "You really ought to stay on our good side."
— Amélie Chapelle, Shadowfell: No Man's Land.
Pushed into Shadowfell by prejudiced and misunderstanding folk after a war highlighted their differences from other races, the Dæmon Fæ have upheld a reputation for being cruel and cold-hearted and though many Dæmon Fæ have emigrated out of Shadowfell, they often struggle with the ever-present stigma. Their appearance and their nature are not their fault but the result of adaptating to Shadowfell's environment in a victorious attempt to prosper, as well as being affected by the attempts to continue life outside of Shadowfell.
Fae Bloodline
Dæmon Fæ are derived from human bloodlines and to some degree, they still look human. However, their Fae heritage has left a clear imprint on their appearance. Dæmon Fæ have large horns that typically curl upwards and away from the head - although they can also be found with horns akin to those of a ram. They also have wings resembling those of a black vulture with a typical wingspan of 11feet. Their canine teeth are sharply pointed, and their eyes are solid colours—black, red, white, silver, or gold—with no visible sclera or pupil. Their skin tones cover the full range of human colouration. Their hair, cascading down from beyond their horns, is usually dark and often black or brown - though variants exist in red.
Self-Reliant, Suspicious and Stubborn
Dæmon Fæ subsist in small minorities found mostly in human cities or towns, often in the roughest quarters of those places, where they grow up to be swindlers, thieves, or crime lords. Sometimes they live among other minority populations in enclaves where they are treated with more respect.
Despite having a homeland, Dæmon Fæ are stubborn creatures and if they are among those who chose to leave Shadowfell they are determined to stay out - and everyone else has to accept that. They are not quick to trust anyone who claims to be a friend, but when a Dæmon Fæ's companions demonstrate that they trust him or her, the Dæmon Fæ learns to extend the same trust to them. And once a tiefling gives someone loyalty, the Dæmon Fæ is a firm friend or ally for life.
Dæmon Fæ Names
Dæmon Fæ names fall into three broad categories. Dæmon Fæ born into another culture typically have names reflective of that culture. Some have names derived from the Infernal language, passed down through generations, that reflect their fiendish heritage. And some younger tieflings, striving to find a place in the world, adopt a name that signifies a virtue or other concept and then try to embody that concept. For some, the chosen name is a noble quest. For others, it’s a grim destiny.
