Homebrew Aberrant Ooze Species Details
The birth of an Aberrant Ooze is an uncommon and often inauspicious event. They begin their lives as a simple nodule of collected cells, typically forming in oozes who have managed to survive for several centuries. As this nodule grows and forms a core it begins developing a consciousness of its own, separate from that of its ooze host body. It is at this point that ooze host will recognize this core as a foreign body and discard it. Depending on their environment many of these cores will not survive this separation, those that do however will use what little ooze they were able to retain from their host to begin feeding. It will retain this small amount of ooze throughout its life cycle to be used for feeding, however all new ooze generated by the core will have lost this acidic property instead taking on a more elastic and easily shaped form. As the Aberrant Ooze feeds and gains more mass it sees a similar increase in its intelligence. When the ooze has taken on enough mass it begins manifesting a more humanoid shape, forming limbs and extremities, in order to become more similar in appearance to other sentient beings that it has observed. It is at this point that the Aberrant Ooze will typically cease its growth as all further nutrients go towards the taxing process of retaining its form.

Posted Jul 12, 2019I am using this with the playtest artificer and playing with the haunted background. "Could" (because he likes the open meaning of the word) is because he saw and once he saw he could not unseen. He developed a deep curiosity about adventurers of all sorts, that came into the abandoned ruins and caves in which he wandered for centuries. He study their movements and sounds. He noticed them sometimes staring into unfolded devices of amusement, which he discovered were book some decades later. He heard music for the first time. The length and breath of is experiences was endless, expect it did, much to Could's dismay. This festered and foster deep loneliness, until one day a studied arcanist wandered into his small dark piece of the world. Now having learned so much about words, by listening, and having collected so many wonderful trinkets, from the many lost or fallen adventurers, he thought surely he would be able to strike a bargain with this wise arcanist. Only the shock and awe of his presence drove the arcanist into a frenzied sprint in the opposite direction. That was unfortunate for the aging magician because he ran straight into a cage trap Could had set, not for him of course, but for food you see. After all catching one's food is so much easier than chasing it, and as it turned out, the same could be said for wizards. Well now what to do, thought Could. So he struck a begrudged bargain after all. The wizard would teach and Could would feed and clothe. Naturally he would release the wizard after he learned what he needed, but unfortunately for the wizard Could had a bizarre since of time and age. As it turns out, SOON, is really a relative term to those who do not age. So after a couple of decades passed so did the ailing caster, however he did not leave this world without teaching Could one more valuable lesson. "Regret and guilt, may they always haunt you and give your conscience something to ponder. You will remember me and all those you have destroyed, for as long as you live, you will hear our voices. May you live long." Uttered the old curse casting spellcaster. And with one final breath, he gave poor Could only one way out of the pain, "live well my pupil or live in misery. Kindness shall be your only respite." And with those last whispers Could was alone again. Unguided and alone, Could pondered the meaning of the curse for an untold amount of time, but slowly through pure and anguished utterances and nightmares, he began to understand the follies of his life and that the souls he had evicted from there many forms would stay with him forever as penance for his wrongs. So he read and he studied. He tinkered and he crafted. He prayed and he cursed. He walked and he wept, until at last he understood his role and that all he had learned and all he had been taught, would now be put to a higher purpose. A purpose he hoped would please the nameless ones and make his late mentor proud. So his quest began from his cave of wonder.

Posted Jul 12, 2019I've figured out which I'm going to go for. It's based off its backstory or lack of one should i say, like BoomBostick suggested. I'm currently doing a campain with just me, a friend and another friend as a DM, not many players. So instead of me just kicking the door down like the coolaid man and introducing my character, I have the idea of having the Ooze stumble across the small party, the party deciding not to kill it and instead take it for a pet. The Ooze will then imprint on the party and take on traits for both of them. I.E a Paladin and a Fighter, so I thought of the Eldritch knight, it utilizes magic much like the Paladin and also has the fighters prowess with martial weapons and dual wielding. Ontop of this, my DM has permitted me to be able to use more spell slots, but only for acidic spells. So this fits even better with the Ooze. (Edit: Should mention the Ooze will still be in its early stages as a small lil' boy with a core instead of fully grown).

Posted Feb 8, 2021The Wizard: Well, it's a disappointment that our bard is an anime girl now.
The Barbarian: Yeah, and the Sorcerer left too. What next?
The Slime Boi: HEY-O!
The Wizard: Well, lookie-here! Looks like another person has finally decided to help!
The Slime Boi: ...I have hunger. *Starts gnawing on The Barbarian*
The Barbarian's Player: Seriously? We just finished a long rest.

Posted Mar 7, 2022I love the idea of this race. When I was making a monster party for a Halloween session, I used this to make a Druid. I envisioned every spell he cast being basically an extension of his Ooze (like wall of water, would be Ooze instead) including all his animal transformations. He'd look like a Bear made of Ooze (imagining the fantasy version of Beast Boy)
