Homebrew Alo'tal Species Details
The Alo'tal are a large people, resembling large humanoid moles, equipped with large claws and incredible strength. The Alo'tal spend most of their lives living in subterranean environments, either in natural caves, or their own burrows and tunnel systems. They are a people who value family, tradition and order and will often spend their entire lives within the same family unit. These units often gather into clans, and very rarely into larger settlements dug into the great mountains of the world, or deep into its crust. Whilst not unheard of, it is very rare for an Alo'tal to leave the company of their own kind, but some do however leave for a life of adventure.
Lone Wanderers
Alo'tal tend to lead a life of adventure for one of two reasons. Most commonly they are the last member of a clan or family that has been attacked, hunted, or enslaved, and as such are forced to find a new purpose in life. Less common is that they have been exiled from their home. This is exceptionally rare as Alo'tal are not only very forgiving of their own kind, but also because it goes against their very nature to commit crimes against their kin.
It is however possible, those very rarely heard of, for an Alo'tal to choose to leave their homes and seek out adventure. These individuals tend to be incredibly driven, enough so to break their natural instinct to remain with their family, with ambition rivalling that of humans.
Outsiders, Spectacle, and Slavery
Due to being rarely seen by the other races of the world, Alo'tal often find themselves subject of the curiosity of others. Often treated by many with distrust or caution due to their size and intimidating appearance, Alo'tal often find themselves outcast by the races of the surface world. In the underdark however, their fate is often that of slavery when discovered by other races. Many races, especially the Drow, do not even recognise the Alo'tal as anything more than beasts. Due to this Alo'tal tend to make great strides to avoid coming into contact with races and settlements unless they are known to be welcoming to those who are different, and will often rely on their party members when adventuring to keep them safe from discrimination.
